I read that Rogers wasn't selected because he's injured. Is that true?

Posted by: Sarah | March 9, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

I'm looking forward to qualifying. I'll be in TN.

Posted by: sitruc | March 9, 2008 6:14 PM | Report abuse

benny can't get a game at derby, and now he got cut from the olympic squad...? oy. anyone have insight on his current lack of form?

Posted by: longfellow | March 9, 2008 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Who are we playing again? We'll win unless it's Mexico, other than that we're good.

Posted by: tri-village | March 9, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, tri-village :)

Well in that case, the USA team has possibly the easiest path to the semis I think I have ever seen.

Posted by: Catherine-Lucia | March 9, 2008 7:17 PM | Report abuse

No worries about Mexico as we own them.

Like we owned the Mexes the last time out in qualies?

Posted by: TK | March 9, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Any info on why Feilhaber was cut?

Posted by: Jason B. | March 9, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully Seitz stays injury-free. I have no confidence in Cervi in clutch situations.

Posted by: JSF | March 9, 2008 9:19 PM | Report abuse

So much for Feilhaber's notion that he deseves DP wages if he were to come to MLS.

Rogers is a surprise cut unless he is injured.

Posted by: Sylvester | March 9, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Who is a surprise non-cut? Gaven, perhaps?

Posted by: tri-village | March 9, 2008 9:31 PM | Report abuse

shame for benny but the depth in that holding mf role with edu, sacha, and dax (and possibly bradley and szetela in the summer) is great for he u.s.

Posted by: ahelms | March 9, 2008 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Gaven actually played in our 4-0 loss to Mexico back in 2004 qualifying. Even though he hasn't made much progress since then, he's always been on the inside track to stay in the team.

I think Kamani Hill's inclusion is quite a surprise; in order to do it, he's had to reinvent himself as a defender. Dax McCarty is another one; he was only on the fringe of last year's U-20s. And finally there's 6'6 keeper Dominic Cervi; before this year's MLS Combine, he was totally unknown.

If Feilhaber wasn't dropped because he is going to get playing time at Derby in the next couple weeks, then wow, what a incredible downward slide. I must say, as many out there, I am quite shocked to see Gaven and McCarty over the likes of Feilhaber, Rogers, and Alvarez. I suppose you have to give Novak the benefit of the doubt. I just hope he doesn't park Adu out on the left as he did at DC...

Posted by: Chase | March 9, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I'm shocked that Gaven continues to get called up for anything. I've never seen him perform well at all. At least with Feilhaber you know that the ability is there as he has delivered for the full national team when it mattered.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 9, 2008 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Dax was captaining the U20s during qualifying when the internationals were not in the team. He was also the first midfield substitute during the U20 WC. I'd hardly call that "fringe"

Wondering why Alvarez isnt picked and Gaven/Barrett were. Seems like Arturo scored more goals in MLS than both of them, maybe combined. He's more dangerous than either and is a lefty (although he doesnt play defense).

i know Barrett scored against Argentina in a U-20 game.

But Wynne will be beast for us!

Its because he looks like Wayne Rooney and they think he does.

Benny, Arturo, and Robbie not in the roster. Wow. How does Benny start over sashca with the full national team, but can't even make our Olym qualifying roster. What is Nowak issue with Centermids?
Arturo is a stud. For the first time in along time we have a hispanic player playing for our older aged national team and he gets cut. Way to embrace the latino contingent. Peter you better win the whole tournament or your looking for a new job.
Benny, please get out of stale England. Go to Spain, Holland, or Portugal where they might appreciate a midfielder with skill and flair. Its bad enough you play for Derby, but your coach has to be moron if he is willing to play Eddie Lewis over you. The experience in England must be crushing his confidence as a player, having said that he was still our best CM against Mexico. Peter you've missed the boat, what did you do bring Greg Ryan in to make your big decision. Do you still have time to add Brianna to the roster?
I will be at the game tuesday, and I am heckling Peter the whole time.

Posted by: Shocked fan | March 10, 2008 1:30 AM | Report abuse

Umm...just an idea... but maybe you should wait to "heckle" Nowak, at least until you see how his team preforms. Players go through dips in form. Feilhaber may have been good last summer...but that tells us nothing as to what he looks like right now. Chill.

Posted by: shocked that you're shocked | March 10, 2008 3:03 AM | Report abuse

Really disappointed about Alvarez. I had a feeling he was going to have a great tournament. It looks like we have exactly 1 Latino player on the team. I don't think we're going to pick up many new fans in the barrios with a roster like that.

===================================

Nowak's job is to win soccer games, not fill quotas.

Posted by: WNT fan | March 10, 2008 7:01 AM | Report abuse

Don't forget the 3 23+ players that will be added. One will obviously be a 'keeper so that position should be moot.

Given Nowak's 'just win baby' attitude, I would not be surprised to see Landon Donovan drafted either. There will surely be another forward given the composition of this roster.

The 23+ picks may also explain the Feilhaber decision. Particularly if Bradley is added later. And it may be the USMNT setup is trying to give Benny a 'subtle' hint to seek out a situation that will merit him some playing time if he wants to keep participating at any level in the system.

Posted by: Liverpool_SC | March 10, 2008 7:06 AM | Report abuse

good points Liverpool. Novak is probably setting up a roster for continuity purposes, and once the 3 overage players join there may not be room for feilhaber. I'm still surprised he didn't make the cut, but it makes more sense if you imagine Donovan or Dempsey (or both) added to the mix. I'd like to see both plus Bocanegra and just rely on Seitz in goal.

rainy and nasty today in Portugal -- in Lisbon, at least -- so some ugly football may be in store for USWNT-Norway this afternoon. I'm just going to follow this one via matchtracker, but I will go down to Wednesday's match to post context to the matchtracker's "just the facts." Win today and WNT are in the finals. Lose, and they play for third.

By the way, does foul weather help or hinder the Americans? I say it helps. Even though we have a supremely gifted team, Norway's is just as technically proficient. Our side's strength and speed, however, probably outshines Norway's. Alvor's stadium is right on the water; I'll bet the wind is howling right now.

Posted by: troy | March 10, 2008 8:34 AM | Report abuse

How large will the actual Olympic squad be? If it is a 23-man squad, then Nowak can at most retain the 20 players he's using at this stage (taking into account the three graybeards), and probably not even that, assuming Bradley and Szetela are brought in. If the limit is 22 (or fewer), the competition for the 19 (or fewer) slots will be even more fierce.

Benny being cut shows that no matter what league you are in you have to see the field constantly or the NATS aren't interested.

The Alvarez cut is no surprise due to his lack of consistency. He's basically an attack only player and only attacks a few times a game at that. Oh and only has one leg was limits his effectiveness further. It's clear the National team staff values Euro players(5 on this roster) over MLS because it's both a higher level and a player shows that he's mature/tough enough to live out of his comfort zone.

How far has Benny fallen? Maybe he should talk to Tino about getting re-focused. Tino has been around longer, fallen further, but seems to have things on track.

Benny needs to find a club where he can play, get his confidence back, and get his career on track. His agent should be working the phones now to make sure his client has multiple options during the summer window. None of them should involve continuing to play for Derby, he needs to get out of there.

Posted by: GoldenChild | March 10, 2008 9:46 AM | Report abuse

they cut arturo alvarez? that leaves one hispanic player remaining on the roster. I guess the latin american community in this country can't produce a quality player under the age of 24? seems kind of odd don't you think?

Posted by: JLMan | March 10, 2008 12:58 PM | Report abuse

Rather have Rogers, Arturo, or Benny than, Gavens and Sacha.

Posted by: JAV | March 10, 2008 12:59 PM | Report abuse

yea I don't know how eddie gaven keeps emerging into the national teams radars

Posted by: JLMan | March 10, 2008 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Wow.

Dropping Benny is a major shock. Has his form dropped so much that he has gone from almost an almost automatic starter on the senior nats to can't make the u-23s.

I wouldn't use Tino as any kind of a comeback benchmark yet. He hasn't done anything other than staved off being cut entirely from MLS.

I also agree with several other posts around Eddie Gaven. I don't get it. He sure hasn't performed anytime he's played United or during the times I've watched the Crew.

Where is Gaven going to play? Who is he ahead of on the U-23???

Far from it. An 2-2 tie with both teams evenly matched throughout the game does not constitute the USA "owning" Mexico.

What a shocker that Nowak would cut Robbie Rogers. Fastest time on the Olympic team, two footed and deadly. Must be an injury.

Posted by: Clarence | March 10, 2008 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Agreed on Rogers-why wouldn't you want this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNkdvl2oVMc?

Posted by: Tim | March 10, 2008 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Well hopefully, Peter Nowak, proves me wrong but, i do believe he made a wrong move by cutting Arturo, Robbie, and Benny. And added Spector, what guarantee is there that they are going to advance to semi-finals and play him then.

As earlier posted, you are making assumptions likely based on never seeing the kid. To my knowledge the kid is quite an athlete, he made some good saves against Va. Tech (game was televised), and against UAB in the C-USA final, he came up with a huge save to preserve the win. (again a televised game) Where do you get off making comments like this? Please justify. Don't just make random statements. Back your talk up with facts. It'll make your arguments that much harder to pick apart.

Upon further investigation, I believe he won a few penalty shoot-outs in college. But, then again what is more clutch than that?

Posted by: Bobby O'Shea | March 10, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Cut who you want but not Robbie Rogers-that makes no sense. I saw him at U-20 World Cup and he was the most consitent motor on the team and was fun to watch with his crosses and speed.

I apologize, I incorrectly had Tulsa playing UAB in the C-USA final, the matches were played at UAB, the opponent however was FIU.
