Sunday Brunch

For his club's Texas Pro Soccer Festival finale today against Houston, D.C. United Coach Tom Soehn plans to give everyone some minutes in order to stay sharp before the Champions' Cup match on Wednesday at Harbour View. Expect numerous substitutions.

The unofficial 18-man travel roster for Jamaica:

GKs: Zach Wells, Jose Carvallo.
Ds: Bryan Namoff, Marc Burch, Gonzalo Martinez, Gonzalo Peralta, Devon McTavish (mf-d).
MFs: Fred, Clyde Simms, Marcelo Gallardo, Santino Quaranta, Dan Stratford, Dominic Mediate, Quavas Kirk (mf-d).
Fs: Jaime Moreno, Luciano Emilio, Franco Niell, Rod Dyachenko (mf-f).

Not traveling: Ryan Cordeiro, Pat Carroll, Justin Moose, Guy-Roland Kpene.

Josh Gardner and David Blumer are done with their trials and will not be offered contracts. I believe Galen Thompson is done as well, but that is not confirmed. The club will continue to evaluate Jamil Walker, Dane Murphy and Cezar.

*David Beckham scores in the Galaxy's loss.

*Awaiting the U.S. Olympic qualifying roster late this afternoon.

*Though we already know the wondrous Barnsley-Chelsea result, you'll want to watch this clever preview montage:

Goff, I know that the rosters had to be finalized last week. Does that mean that if Walker, Murphy or Cezar make the team does someone else has to be cut?

I know roster spots (senior vs. developmental) have been discussed before, I'm just trying to keep it straight.

Thanks!

Cue the fans outrage at leaving behind the goal less in 700 minutes of play Kpene and his "potential."

Glory, glory to United
Glory, glory to United
Glory, glory to United
We'll bring the Cup on home!

"Beckham was the first player up in the penalty shootout and converted, but a miss by Greg Vanney gave South China claim victory."

And I thought dead balls were Vanney's bread and butter.
I look forward to regular season misses and own goals from Vanney and Boswell.

Preempting "the fans" and their "outrage" doesn't make your commentary any more valuable. Nor does putting the word "potential" in quotes make it less true.

Vanney is now 0 for 2 in PKs in Galaxy Pre-Season - so much for his dead ball skills.

DC-Houston pre-season match is 0-0 at the half. No other details right now.

How did the DC-Houston game finish?

Posted by: emilio11 | March 9, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

I don't get the "Barnsley" reference in the preview montage.

Help?

Houston just scored, 1-0 Houston. Houston's Bigsoccer thread here: http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=667083&page=2

So did get our first Cup win of the year?!?!

It's never to early to add to the collection, regardless of how meaningless it may seem to some.

My, aren't we surly today?

what's the final score against houston?

Posted by: bubbles | March 9, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Keep the phrase, "David Beckham scores in the Galaxy's loss," handy, maybe even build it into a spell check swap-a-roo; so sure you will be using it a bit this season.

1-1 final, DCU-Houston

Cezar in the 78th

Posted by: Goff | March 9, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Steve,

I'm sorry if you already mentioned this in a previous thread, but if Dyachenko and all our new foreign players are traveling internationally for this game, does this mean that every-one's paperwork, visas, etc. are now in? Also, is Dyachenko cleared to go to Toronto as well?

Thanks!

Posted by: apqjr | March 9, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

I assume everything is fine for foreign travel.

Posted by: Goff | March 9, 2008 3:02 PM | Report abuse

I think Cezar has justified a contract with DC United...sign this kid already!!!

I didn't get it either. anyone?

What about Cezar? Even if he didn't make the Harbour View selection, hasn't he played his way onto the squad?

Posted by: Hedbal | March 9, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Cezar could be out, just because we don't really have any international roster slots left. Unless Carvallo does actually have a green card, which I don't think has ever been confirmed either way yet.

Great sign for Dan Stratford that the rookie is already earning his way into the gameday 18. I'm also glad to see Dyachenko traveling over Kpene.

With a few preseason goals, Cezar has seemingly got a good shot to grab a roster spot - perhaps he can teach Kpene how to score.

Don't be stupid. Carvallo has a green card. Cezar will make the last international slot.

A question for Goff: the various soccer gear sites show the 2008 DCU jerseys without the trademark three horizonal stripes across the front. Will a sponsor's logo be in their place when DCU takes the field Wednesday? Or are they already playing with a sponsor's logo? If so, this is worth a story. In a related matter, the MLS store's customer records were hacked a while back. MLS has provided customers with a free year's worth of credit monitoring. The MLS store has virtually disappeared from the league's website. Another story?
