Ain't No Sunshine

Bill Withers wrote it. Everyone from the Neville Brothers to Ziggy Marley and Sting covered it.

On the subject of great music, please take five and read this profile of Dave Brubeck that appeared in The Post on Sunday.

Where is this going? Not sure really. But it was, after all, a gloomy day, no sunshine in sight, and by the time you read this Monday morning, the grayness will probably still be with us. Perhaps soon, a lovely day. Besides, I had to find an excuse to work Withers and Brubeck into cyberspace's most cultured soccer blog.

On the brighter side.....

*The USA women's team defeated Mexico, 3-1, to clinch first place in group play and set up a semifinal with Costa Rica on Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET) for an Olympic berth. Canada will meet Mexico in the other match (9:30). I'll go with a 4-0 USA victory and a 2-1 Canada win in overtime.

*Madness, Part I: Houston 3, Dallas 3, capping a weekend that included 22 goals in five matches in MLS.

*Madness, Part II: Atletico Madrid 6, Almeria 3. "It was a strange match, including the score," Atletico Manager Javier Aguirre confirmed. Simao and Aguero scored two each, Almeria lost two players to red cards. From the Atletico Web site, after the Madrid side scored two goals in the first five minutes:

"The populated stands rubbed their eyes in disbelief, dreaming of a calm afternoon of enjoyment. But this wasn't to be the case because Almeria, far from falling apart after such a fateful beginning, leaned on their habitual portfolio to get back into the match to the general surprise of the fans."

*American lad Oguchi Onyewu scores a late game-winner for Belgian leader Standard Liege.

*Cardiff City joins Portsmouth in the FA Cup final after extinguishing Barnsley's extraordinary run.

*Still having trouble finding the new Dick's Sporting Goods commercial featuring Olsen, Gomez, Ching and Davino, but here is the making of the ad:

And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know.....
