Women's Olympic Draw Results
The USA will play Norway, Japan and New Zealand in the first round of the Olympic tournament this summer -- a breeze for the Americans compared to the mega-group of Germany (World Cup champion), Brazil (World Cup runner-up), African champion Nigeria and Asian power North Korea. Host China was placed with Sweden, Canada and Argentina.
Germany is ranked No. 2 in the world, Brazil 4th and North Korea 6th, yet they are all in the same group. The No. 1 USA is joined by No. 5 Norway and No. 10 Japan. China (14th) is joined by No. 3 Sweden and No. 9 Canada. Perhaps it's time to dump these draws and simply seed the teams in order to create more balanced groups.
Brazil earned the final slot in the women's field earlier today with a 5-1 victory over Ghana in Beijing.
Meantime, Germany unveiled the logo for the 2011 Women's World Cup and Pia Sundhage has finalized her 25-player roster for the USA's friendlies against Australia on Saturday in Cary, N.C., and May 3 in Birmingham, and against Canada on May 10 in Washington.
