Matchday: DCU at TFC

Greetings from Toronto, usually one of my favorite stops on the MLS bandwagon tour. Usually. Not today. Gray, windy, cold, a touch of rain. Otherwise, this city is a gem.

As your favorite soccer/culture blog, we pay tribute today to Canada's contribution to the music scene: Neil Young, Robbie Robertson, Jeff Healey, Oscar Peterson, Barenaked Ladies, BTO, Blue Rodeo, April Wine, Rush, Bruce Cockburn, Tragically Hip, Crash Test Dummies, Blue Rodeo, KD Lang, Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell, Pat Travers, Alanis Morrisette, Nelly Furtado, Triumph, Chilliwack, Guess Who, Aldo Nova, Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne and, of course, Men Without Hats. (Your submissions are welcome.)

Because of our late arrival in the city, the usual MLS road cuisine recommendation will be based on previous visits: Cora's, a few blocks from Rogers Centre (formerly SkyDome). Best breakfast around.

Okay, time for football.

*DCU lead investor Victor MacFarlane makes the Wall Street Journal in a non-DCU matter. Read about it here.

*Pay no attention to the links between DCU and Newcastle/Australia forward Mark Viduka. It's not happening. GM Dave Kasper tells me there has been absolutely no communication.

*My flight from Dulles this afternoon included several DCU players who will suit up in tomorrow morning's reserve match, including forward Franco Niell, which means, unless there is a late scratch, the little Argentine will not be on the 18-man roster tonight. Gonzalo Peralta arrived in town this morning.

Starting lineup to come.....

DCU LINEUP: Wells; Namoff, Peralta, McTavish, Martinez; Quaranta, Simms, Gallardo, Fred; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Carvallo, Burch, Stratford, Doe, Kirk, Cordeiro, Mediate. (Dyachenko and Niell did not make the list and will play in the reserve game.)

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

Hmmmm...

--------------Carvallo---------------
Namoff---Peralta----Martinez----Burch
----------------Simms----------------
McTavish-------------------------Fred
---------------Gallardo--------------
------------Moreno-------------------
------------------Emilio-------------

Why Carvallo?

I think it'd be best to wait till Saturday to put him in there, but I don't think Soehn will wait that long.

I doubt McTavish or Fred can go 90, so I'd expect to see Kirk or Mediate for McTavish and Cordeiro for Fred.

That leaves Quaranta for either Gallardo or Moreno.

Oh yeah, also Cowboy Junkies and The Hawk, Ronnie Hawkins.

Rats. Beaten to it. How about Kathleen Edwards? She's incorporated the finest line ever about sports in any song (from "I make the Dough, You Get the Glory"):

"You're The Great One,
I'm Marty McSorley.
You're the Concord,
I'm economy.
I make the dough,
but you get the glory."

Ok. As compelling as all this canadian music talk is, pardon the interruption because I came here to talk soccer.

Devon McTavish is starting at center back for the first time this year. That's a good move and I'm already giving Soehn a bit of credit for shaking things up. No offense to Burch, but this might be our best starting backline yet this year.

Posted by: DCUMD | May 21, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

More Canadian contributions to culture: No Means No and D.O.A.

I'm impressed, Mr. Goff, by Chiliwack (crappy town, by the way; no offense intended to the locals). I'm not all that thankful, however, to have their one hit (of which I know; give 'em some credit) stuck in my ("Gone, gone, gone, she been gone so long, gone, gone, gone, gone so long...").

Regarding the game, I don't normally write such things, but go DC! Things will be more interesting generally if they start performing. And we're all here to be entertained, ain't we?

Posted by: Jeff Bull | May 21, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

I like to see Burch on the field though. He's the most dangerous crosser into the box. With Fred on the field, we know he'll turn in at the 18, we need somebody who will get to the corner and cross one in. He also has a boot. On that field (wet, hard), a well struck low ball could skip into the net. I do like the shakeup.

By the way, I'm terribly disappointment that there is no truth to the Viduka thing. I was already writing out my goodbye cards for Emilio and Niell.

Posted by: moreno4prez | May 21, 2008 6:57 PM | Report abuse

I for one am glad that Soehn's resorting to the 4-4-2. Let's face it; we're NOT a 3-5-2 team, and it showed with the results we've been getting.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2008 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Shouldn't forget Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Count me in as favoring the 4-4-2. Anything that helps out Clyde Simms has to be a plus.

Posted by: asitis | May 21, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

This team needs to be working the overlaps on the wing to overcome the clustering in the middle. This is where I really miss Gros.

My set would be Quaranta and Emilio up top, Fred on the right where he can be dangerous, Cordiero on the left with Burch working the overlaps, and Simms pushing up a little more combining with Gallardo. Couple that with Moreno coming off the bench at the half or the 60 minute mark.

In addition to those named (great call with Kathleen Edwards):
The New Pornographers
Great Big Sea
Ani DiFranco
The Weakerthans
Emm Gryner

And oh yeah. Good to see Fred in the lineup -- United desperately needs a win, and hopefully Fred is healthy enough to be a difference maker.

About Viduka -- I accept DCU's assertion that there has been no communication -- but why did this rumor begin? Perhaps Viduka's side? If so, maybe there's a possibility of some communication in the near future?

An interesting bit of synchronicity with the Canadian music discussion, and Goff's inexplicable omission of Leonard Cohen, who will be one of the best remembered. according to Viduka's wikipedia entry, an English singer named Alistair Griffin recorded a song about Viduka, sung to the tune of Cohen's now ubiquituous "Hallelujah" song. It's supposedly available as a charity download. It can be seen and heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMqLueRm3Fc&feature=related

Nice to see that our side is looking relatively healthy again. Let's get it back on track tonight. Wish Wells wasn't starting though. He's terrible. Seems like a great guy, but just too many mistakes. Give Carvallo a shot. Maybe he sucked at RSL, but it was on that awful surface. At least Toronto's artificial surface plays better than RSL's.

Posted by: Bart | May 21, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Anyone know Customs officials so that Wells can have "paperwork" problems and be left behind. While McTavish screwed up, Wells still should have had that-- I think he even touched it.

Posted by: John | May 21, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

United players do not have any anticipation thinkings as to how the passing will come though and where. They do not have good instant decision making thoughts. You never pass the ball to your keeper in the pk area with striker hanging over your shoulder. It was so simple to just clear the ball away to either corner or even to the side. And of course Wells as usual doesn't come off early or not on the line.

Posted by: FC | May 21, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

They put all their emotions into one big basket called the CCC, they went bust and then said - "oh well, Frack it!"

Posted by: Kosh | May 21, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

OK, I will grant that McT was mostly to blame for that goal, but how does Wells just stand there and let the ball roll past him as slow as a ball can possibly roll while actually moving? All he had to do was fall over!

Where's our midfield? Luci is all alone.

wRongen is absolutely right. There's no moving off the ball.

Posted by: Glenn | May 21, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

I agree with FC. How can you pass the ball to the keeper when you know the pitch is wet and he can't catch it? Dumb instinctive play.

Posted by: Bart | May 21, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

McT takes a tumble on the turf, fans bust out in laughter.

Different story on this side of the screen.

Too many touches from Tino. Put it away, damn it!

Posted by: DCBird | May 21, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Why can't we hold the ball for more than 1.7 seconds? Even Moreno is giving it away like a virgin on prom night.

Posted by: DCBird | May 21, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Memo to coach:

Don't put your weakest defender in the freaking center.

Posted by: spike_2.0 | May 21, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

As long as Emilio is on the field DCU will not win this year. He has some sort of bad luck brings with him that makes everyone around him rubbish. Mr. Tom Sucks, your ugly boy is not making any impact for the team except to play back the ball when he rarely gets the ball. Another bad move is McTavis put it on the right back which I don't think he is comfortable with.

Posted by: FC | May 21, 2008 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Namoff seems to be playing well. Silver lining?

I feel embarrassed for Gallardo having to play with those lumps out there.

Posted by: vabeach | May 21, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

nooo where was Gallardo's vision on that play? Tino wide open on the right!

Posted by: XioPik | May 21, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Emilio moves like pig. Why can't he move back faster. Moreno is so old he can't run.

Posted by: td | May 21, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

So... let's convince Moreno to retire... and sell Emilio... then use the money to get two strikers that can still play.

P.S. for all those who are criticizing T.S. for putting Mc Tavish in at defense, in the middle. it was the correct place to put him. he has been out for awhile and would run out of steam on the wing. also TS has noticed how good martinez is going forward. on that note, What a horrible mistake!

Martinez has done better carrying the ball than anyone but Gallardo tonight. Pull Moreno, switch Fred to the center, move Martinez up to the wing, and put Burch in at left back.

Unconventional maybe, but what have we got to lose?

Posted by: td | May 21, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Let me just put this out there: DCU has developed a serious case of bad karma.

I propose we give VW back all their money, and get a sponsor that will bring in good karma. At this point, VW might be happy to get their money back....

Posted by: Fisch Fry | May 21, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Get rid of Moreno? Sacrilege. How dare you say such evil, evil things around these parts. Off with your head!!

Posted by: Kosh | May 21, 2008 8:31 PM | Report abuse

At central defense is not where you put someone who is just getting it back together. Your central defenders have to have wheels, guts, and a killer instinct. They're the hub of the defense.

They might not have to run a whole lot, but they'd better be ON IT when necessary. No hesitation, no b.s.

Emilio needs to be off the field if he can't figure out how to rotate back through the midfield. But there is no structure to the offense, whatsoever, beyond switching it out to Fred.

Mediate for McTavish? Is that supposed to be an offensive move? With Doe, Kirk, and Cordiero on the bench?

Soehn must be drunk.

Doe for Moreno.

I agree with Dadryan, the effort did seem much more sincere tonight. The hustle was there and this field really does blow. BUT if the result is not there, the same issues will have to be raised and addressed.

hey since i live out of state...how has kirk done in the reserve games? i just cannot see why he hasnt gotten a run at RM and why Q hasnt been paired with moreno up top?

What's the over/under that Dyachenko steps onto this field?

Posted by: Kosh | May 21, 2008 9:18 PM
==========================================

See the gameday roster (sans Dyachenko) that Goff posted above. (Is there a reserve game scheduled for this field?)

My bad. It seems so long ago wgen I read that.

We seem quite charitable lately with all these firsts. we give and we give and we give and we ask for nothing in return.

Posted by: Kosh | May 21, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Better effort but effort doesn't count. Goals do. Why in God's name did we let Perkins go? I know it's good for him but it really sucks for us. Wells is no replacement.

Let me be the first to say it tonight, fire Soehn now. Don't even bring him back to DC. And leave some players to keep him company.

Well that's that. I'm off to bed to now and will try to forget this thing that I just saw. I'll have sweet, sweet dreams of Man U's success, and hopefully I'll wake up to some good news from Goff (a position change please, Santa Goff?)

[Expletive!]

I will puke if another hater-hater says "oh, you guys keep saying the sky is falling...it is not...it is just a rought patch."

VOMIT!

The has not fallen...it has PLUNGED and crushed DC United beneath it.

Honestly, what does it take for there to be consensus that the team is playing like complete garbage and this is not some growing pain to be surpassed?

Jaime's quote was dead-on and priceless - he said the chemistry excuse is "cheap."

I wish my season tickets were so cheap.

I love Goff line about the team plunging into the abyss. They are there!

Soehn is about to spew his post-game drivel on Comcast. Platitudes and cliched statements about "playing this bad is unacceptable" are sure to ensue.

We are sick of talk. We want goals. We want them YESTERDAY!

Oh yeah, before I forget...Fire Soehn! Pretty please (will that get it done?)

Ok good night, now.

Posted by: Kosh | May 21, 2008 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Fred was terrible on LW, true, but Soehn has been playing him out of position since he got here.

Wells is not the devil.

Moreno is no forward anymore, and with Simms as DM we don't even have the Ballack spot for him.

Emilio doesn't move without the ball. Neither do many others.

Quaranta needs to see some time in lieu of Moreno, and someone needs to take Emilio's spot.

To be honest, with four on the back line, I would ditch the DM spot and put Simms up at a wing, maybe in Olsen's spot.

Here's the way I see it now.

----------------Wells----------------
Namoff----Peralta---Martinez---McTavish/Mediate
Simms-----Gallardo----Moreno-----Burch
------Quaranta---------Fred------------

"Why in God's name did we let Perkins go? I know it's good for him but it really sucks for us. Wells is no replacement."

Its hard to believe after watching Wells, but Perkins was a weak link. He was shaky. Often good for a major f-up at the wrong time. We just did a poor job replacing him.

The Keeper of the year award was a joke. He was never that good.

Anne Murray

Posted by: Bubbles | May 21, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

why did we let Perkins go?
A: he was good, but not great.
B: someone was willing to pay us money for him. The team, and league, always needs cash.
C: he wanted to leave. You really want a player who wants to be on another continent?

Wells is not that big of a downgrade. And he is getting steadier, at least. Anyone remember Perkins' Chivas laugher?

To be serious, this was a more promising game. We aren't good, but on the road, against a team that doesn't concede goals at home, we weren't embarassed.

Posted by: northzax | May 21, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

And we can't forget his FC Dallas debacle, either.

Posted by: Glaucon | May 21, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Spike,

You would put Moreno in central midfield?!? He has no legs left.

Seriously, the one thing Moreno does perhaps better than anyone in MLS is play with his back to goal, absorb pressure, suck out that extra defender and dump off to an open teammate.

His physical prowess is much diminished, but his essential skill remains. If anything, he would best pair up top as a holding forward to release and or feed a ruthless striker. Unfortunately, DC does not have a ruthless striker. I had hoped he could have paired this way with the pacey Niell, with Niell disrupting the back and benefiting from Moreno's service, but it never panned out.

With his fitness at issue, central midfield is perhaps the last place to put him.

I am not a Moreno is God guy, but of the various underperformers this season, I merely think he is not a worst-offender.

THREE SHOTS ON GOAL the entire match. That goes beyond Moreno.

Soehn just did his postgame interview on Comcast. VERY TENSE. He looked like he was facing a guy who murdered his parents. Of course, the platitudes ensued - they must play better, they have to be better at home, they have to score goals. I am glad he revealed those gems...now I can finally understand what needs to be done.

Posted by: Erick | May 21, 2008 10:02 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't ask Moreno to run much, but just to play space, distribute, and take free kicks. Let Gallardo run.

I didn't expect a win tonight, I figured we'd get a 1-1 result.
If it wasn't for ZACH WELLS staring at the ball and having cinderblocks for feet the result would have been just that.
United worked a hell of a lot harder all over field tonight and if it wasn't for such a pile of garbage crap goal in early minutes DC would have scored first. I am sure of it.
Toronto may have caught up with us at the end with their crowd support...Toronto sucks. Total Barnies!
The team that started tonight is the team we need on the field every game. Forget our goalie. The team just needs to knuckle down and play fierce. I like Peralta smacking people up a bit especially Douchio.
If he's gonna run like a he's got bricks in his back pocket too the least he could do is scare the crap out of anyone who may have to keep their eye on the ball when he's around.
We lost but I honestly feel like it was a draw cuz we were in their(best fans in MLS?) house, their goal was garbage and that's that.
Fred for Man of the Match.

Ummm!!! Did it really take Soehn this long to go to a 4-4-2? Hello, the team didn't play a 2-5-3 last year what in god's name was he thinking that they could this year? Much improved, but no result. I thought Fred was great, but when Burch came in he looked like a statue with the ball for the first 15 he was in there! Here is the Formation Soehn can I get a Ditto from the Gang!!!

Emillio --- Quaranta
Fred
Mctavich----Gallardo----Moreno

Martinez/Burch-- Simms-----Namoff
Peralta

Wells

That's the best 10 on the field. Simms plays far enough back already and can distribute better than Peralta and Martinez, he can also cover either wing when Namoff and Martinez move forward, but the bottom line is if you want possesion then place the men who can posess on the same line.

Fred would be a great attaching buffer in order to give time to Gallardo to distribute. Moreno out right a la Beckham, because the wheels just aren't there anymore and let's score some goals dammit!!

Someone give me a Hollar!!!

Yo Bart I actually have been wonderin' what's up with the Redskins and looking for reason to start paying attention all off season again.
My money at this moment is on them doing better than they did last year, and having a hell of a lot more fun doing it and with a little less pressure. Zorn may not be the long term answer but what's wrong with a little West Coast funk thrown into the mix?

Posted by: moses | May 21, 2008 11:19 PM | Report abuse

I agree with DCU Fan -- almost -- I had a similar thought during the game. Simms would be in the defense, though I think he should be on the flank. WIth he and Martinez, United would be a threat to push up from either side. Namoff was doing this in the early weeks, but I haven't seen it from him all month. In fact, I would say that this is one of the biggest absences during this prolonged slump. Sure our offense can't score, or even shoot. Sure, Burch and Quaranta kick most of their passes straight into the defender marking them. But, if we could get a push up from the rear, with overlaps, etc. -- we'd have an offense that could create some. Defenses couldn't stay in these impenetrable shells.

In fact, I think Soehn ought to consider swappng Namoff and Simms. And the FO ought to consider getting a forward that can hold the ball and then turn and create enough space to get off a shot.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2008 11:22 PM | Report abuse

I wish that I could've seen the game. I didn't even get a chance to tivo it. Damn it, Wells must've really sucked a fat one tonight. I gotta find the replays. I do want to say that I was the absolute first to say all of the Wells things that are being said. I said it after the Pachuca opener. I'm so happy that everyone is finally seeing how bad he is and I don't always have to defend myself. Neither one of our current keepers is the answer. We should be looking during the summer transfer period for a new keeper.

Ok, I just saw the goal. That was horrible with Q and Wells. Q should've never passed back, and so poorly also, but Wells should've charged the ball. He should've taken out both players to get to the ball. That ball should've never been shot.

Old WNT Fan and argo8 covered two of my favourites (Gordon Lightfoot and Great Big Sea), so I'll just add Natalie MacMaster and The Cottars to the roll of great Canadian musicians.

As for the game... *sigh* We need to find a better keeper. McTavish had a bad slip (well, two), but the GK has to cover stuff like that, and Wells shows no sign of being up to that.

We also need to find an attacking combo that works. Emilio either needs to step up or sit down.

And we need credible depth. We seem *always*, season after season, to be falling down in this department. I am tired of thinking "Well, that *has* to be the starting 11, because there's no one else on the roster qualified to start..." Other teams in MLS manage to find more than one decent player for most positions--why is DC unable to?
