No Fred

Greetings from Denver. The team is on its way.

Fred (the D.C. United midfielder, not the Lyon forward or the XM Ch. 44 station) did not make the trip because of his quadriceps injury. As expected, midfielders Devon McTavish (foot) and Domenic Mediate (hamstring) also stayed home.

As far as I can tell, here is your traveling party for Sunday's match against the Rapids.....

GKs: Wells, Carvallo.
Ds: Namoff, Burch, Martinez, Peralta, Carroll.
MFs: Quaranta, Simms, Gallardo, Stratford, Cordeiro, Dyachenko, Kirk.
Fs: Moreno, Emilio, Niell, Doe.

Starting lineup?

My guess is a 3-5-2 with Wells; Namoff, Peralta, Martinez; Quaranta, Simms, Dyachenko, Gallardo, Burch; Moreno, Emilio.

You'll also be interested in reading Rapids Coach Fernando Clavijo's comments in the Rocky Mountain News:

"I would believe if you looked at D.C. United and us -- they got Gallardo and we have Christian Gomez. I'll take Christian Gomez any time. Is Christian Gomez a DP-caliber player? Yes. Did we get the best part of it? Yes. When you bring in a designated player, you don't know what you are going to get. It's an unproven commodity in the United States. We have a unique situation traveling all over the place, and some people don't fit in. New culture, everything is different. If we made the right decision, only time will say. But I'll tell you right now -- I'm very happy the way things have transpired."

chris,

you are missing one in the formation... are you going for a 353 or a 442?

Chris - playing at altitude with 10 men seems a little bold to me. Especially since I have the feeling that Gomez will be a man possessed tomorrow.

Time to bench Emilio. sub Moreno to Niell 60th. Straford for Gallardo 70th and rest him for Chicago game. I am happy Fred will recover on time for Blancdive game.

opps ad Carroll to 4-4-2

Posted by: td | May 3, 2008 2:26 PM | Report abuse

As I said in another thread, I was really expecting/hoping for a 442 in this game. However, Fred's injury highlights the fact that he and Burch are our only true left sided players that have any experience. I do seem to recall Doe being able to play on the left, but NY preferred him as a striker. Soehn could also play Kirk on the right and Quaranta on the left, or it could be a start for Cordeiro in Fred's place.

In the end, though, I think it'll be a 352. Now, does Soehn throw Stratford back in (helping Simms crowd out Gomez), or play Dyachenko and hope that he and Gallardo can keep the ball enough to starve the Colorado attack? That's the $64,000 question.

They sort of used this lineup a few weeks ago. I say give it a try again, and if not this then try Stratford out again in the middle, maybe that could help slow Gomez. I don't think it's a good time to bench Emilio. Give the guy another chance, even the best strikers get into these ruts. We'll never know if he'll bounce back from this if he's not playing.

After I saw this in the previews thred I couldn't let it go but to repost it here. Regardless, it is an encouraging news. First, I thought this guys is making things up to show some video clips but then when I saw Mr. Payne actually sitting there and talking..it is real. Let's really hope something concrete coming out soon.
Enjoy and Thank you Andy for finding this!
Speaking of new announcements, I just read that a deal could be made that promises a new DC United stadium...more likely to be IN THE DISTRICT. Kevin Payne said on the Forbes Video Network that an announcement could be made as early as this spring.

http://www.forbes.com/video/?video=fvn/sportsmoney/mo_sm032008&partner=contextual

Honestly, any news of a new stadium is good news, especially if Payne is speculating that a deal is about to be finalized and that it is "more likely to be in the District."
Goff, heard any news about this? What does everyone else think?

Fine, I'll play this sordid game:

--------------Wells--------------
---Namoff---Peralta---Martinez---

------Dyachenko----Simms---------

--Q3--------Gallardo------Burch--
--------------------Moreno-------

Let Kirk and Doe run at tired legs in the second half, with either Niell or Stratford for late tactical changes.

as for the dcu stadium in the district, payne has been saying the same things for weeks/months/years. at some point, they are going to reach a deal with the city or commit to pg county. the preference is dc, so they'll pursue it as long as they can.

Knowing their sketchy history in Colorado (haven't won since 2000) and the injuries heading into this game, my head says play four in the back and insert Kirk into midfield.

My heart says go 3-5-2 with Rod and Gallardo ahead of Simms and go for the win. Colorado stinks and is terrible offensively if you can knock Gomez around a bit.

With the potential season ending injury news to Olsen, this just might be the excuse the team could use (aside from their usual excuses when losing at altitude) to lose this game. I love this team as much as anyone else, but they don't have the heart of a team like New England who can go down 6 starters and still pull out results.

United missing starters usually means a loss (with a few exceptions, one chiefly being the win in NE last season). Combine that with their eternal crappy performances in Colorado and unfortunately I see yet another dissapointing loss in Denver , ummmm make that Commerce City.

Hope I'm wrong.

This comment is ridiculous. I like Gomez, and he was a great asset to our side. But the problem with Colorado's perspective is that Gomez really doesn't have the upside that Gallardo does. The flashes of quality that we have seen so far from Gallardo shout that this guy is going to be amazing for us this year. I couldn't be happier with our dp.

not that this matters at all, but last night I was at the wiz/cavs game and Mr Fenty was sitting two rows in front of me. I kept saying very loudly, "Keep United in DC!!" At the end of the game, he came up to me and we chit chatted, and he said that United was "absolutely" staying in DC. He just didn't say where. Now I'm sure he was playing the political game, and doesn't care a rat's @ss about me or my thoughts, but at least he seemed sincere, especially since I was shouting it at him all game.

Could someone call FSC and ask them to fix the vertical hold on the USWNT game?

Posted by: RK | May 3, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

Well, after watching our defense continue to leak, do people really think we wouldn't be better off if we had kept Gomez, and used the slots/money from Gallardo to strengthen the defense? I think Clavijo may be right--not because Gomez is a better player than Gallardo, but because for MLS, he was/is more than good enough, and we have other problems that should have been addressed first.

Posted by: John | May 3, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Fred should have sacked up and played.

And Gomez is not mediocre - put him on our lineup instead of Moreno and me thinks the majority of the goal scoring woes would be gone. Between Moreno and Niel's salaries was enough money for Gomez and a solid 3rd string forward.

Posted by: Henchlow | May 3, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Gomez losing was a loss for us (he certainly picked up goals in the clutch for us last year). Hopefully Gallardo can make up for that loss.

Does anyone know if Olsen cant play again do we get some type of magical allocation with MLS's rules as you go policy?

Posted by: Darth Hater | May 3, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Henchlow:

With all due respect, I have to ask: Have you ever taken a large man's knee into your thigh at full speed? It hurts. You can't run or kick properly. It takes time to heal. Unless it turns out you're on the United training staff, I'm going to guess leaving Fred behind was the right call.

Also, I've got to disagree with your Gomez comments. We had games last year where Gomez played and Moreno didn't. The result, just like it has been since 2004, was rudderless play. This team does not know how to play without Moreno. It has happened over and over again.

Now, on to what I came on to mention: Watching the FSC game right now, I notice Crew fans using streamers and chanting "This is our house". Seems nice, except isn't that exactly what Toronto does? I guess it's an improvement over the lame Crew stadium atmosphere, but it's still kind of sad.

Another ugly attendance for Columbus and New England. Both drew little over 10k. RSL probably has more because of Beckham and I am sure they were happy to see Becks score two goals so far. Wow. Sounds like one is his trade mark. Houston has not put the attendance yet. I will be surprise if it draws 11k.
Re: stadium, from the moment when DC govt awarded to Clark I thought they will make it happen to DCU deal since they are already involve with the club. But even if it comes out with some kind of news soon, it may be something like DCU and Clark reach agreement to build stadium. But than the most hurdle is to climb over DC govt's red tape which is not known what will happen. Not to put down optimistics but that's how I feel.
Re: game tomorrow, it feels like we must win from this point. Seeing at the bottom the table with 6 points and Crew jumping up with 15 points is somewhat unreal. Maybe Sohn should not chang the formation.

To the article concerning Gomez. Pretty good piece on him and his transition.

Posted by: marksman | May 4, 2008 5:45 AM | Report abuse

Chest,

My guess is Martinez and Peralta would play with a similar knock as Fred. He is not the toughest, but then again is only about 140 lbs, so I can concede that maybe mean old Talley's kneecap hurt him more than most.

As far as Gomez playing without Moreno I totally agree, but I was referring to this year's team. You put Gomez in front of Gallardo and behing Emilio and I bet he would have had at least 6 goals this season and Emilio would have a couple more as well. Gomez has the speed to take advantage of the through balls while Emilio looks like he is running in cement. Gomez would have been a far better/healthier/faster fit as the withdrawn forward than Moreno. As a worse case I think Gomez could have been as good as Jamie's MVP season of 2004 with this lineup.

Niell is far worse than Donnett and Filomeno (maybe comparabe to Villegas going back a few years), and I think a total waste of $$$. The money differential between Moreno's $275k and Gomez's $325k plus incentives could have come from Niell's $150k salary with plenty left over for a serviceable bench option.

Posted by: Henchlow | May 4, 2008 8:19 AM | Report abuse

RSL won that game. The replay of that third goal makes it look like he was on sides.

After watching that game I'm in the mood for some college football. They couldn't do a better job getting rid of the football lines? When is Utah's first home game?

=====================================
I think y'all are reading too much into this comment. What exactly do you expect Clavijo to say? "Gomez is ok, but I'd really like my cheap front office to get me a real DP"

I'm sure given a choice he would prefer Gallardo, but it's not as if he is going to say so. Gomez is a very good player, and Clavijo does raise a very good point which is when you spend $350k or more on a player, there is always a risk that he won't acclimate to the US, that risk isn't there with Gomez.

That said, I'm happy with Gallardo thank you very much :-)

Posted by: Wyrm2 | May 4, 2008 10:02 AM | Report abuse

As an outsider looking in, I don't think Clavijo is necessarily saying that Gomez is the better player. IMO, he is saying they are both players are of DP quality in our league, but Gomez has already proven himself in MLS.

When you look at players like Denilson and Reyna, his theory doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. It remains to be seen if he's right about this situation though.

I can't believe the way you guys are ripping on Gomez. He was a loyal servant of DCU and Gallardo is being paid about four times as much and brings less to the table. Gomez wasn't really asking for a lot of money so the comments to that effect are kind of lame.

If anything, I think you guys might be bitter as I've no doubt that DCU would be higher in the standings if Gomez were in the lineup instead of Gallardo. Better yet, drop Moreno and pay Gomez the additional cash. I'm sure that Gomez could have scored all the PK goals that will be gifted to Moreno this season.

I know this sounds bad but it's not meant that way. DCU was my team until Seattle got its franchise, now it will be my second favorite team. Regardless, I hope you guys pull it together down the stretch.
