Midday Update

*USA defender Cat Whitehill tore a knee ligament and will miss the Olympics, the second women's standout to be ruled out of the Summer Games.

*CONCACAF conducted only a portion of the Champions League draw (my bad), so we still don't know the potential groups for DCU and Houston. However, Chivas USA and New England learned their preliminary matchups:

Revs vs. Joe Public (T&T)
Chivas USA vs. Tauro (Panama)
(Home and home, late August and early September)

More details will be announced next Monday.

*Time for another Insider poll.....

So far this season, Matt Reis deserves to be MVP and I say this as a DCU fan.

Just saw this...AWESOME!...couldn't happen to a bigger hijodeputa (I will never forgive the swipe he took at EJ)...

I am jubilant!

Mexican goalie Sánchez arrested in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) -- Mexican national team goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez is facing misdemeanor trespassing and resisting arrest charges after an incident at a downtown Chicago hotel.

Police say Sanchez was asked to leave the Westin Michigan Avenue early Monday following Mexico's 4-0 victory over Peru in a friendly in Chicago -- and refused. The hotel called police, who arrested Sanchez when he again refused to leave.

Sanchez told reporters in Mexico City that teammates were listening to music in their room and wouldn't turn the volume down as the hotel asked.

Sanchez says police arrived as he was trying to calm things down, grabbed him, sprayed him with tear gas and took him into custody.

Police officials confirmed officers did use pepper spray to subdue Sanchez, explaining he was resisting arrest.

I would like to put in another vote for Matt Reis, without him NE would be sunk by now.

Hey 135! Obviously you didn't hear me call "Shotgun!"

Seriously, I also despise Matt Reis - but know he is the best keeper in the MLS, and has been so for that past 4 or 5 years. The guy is nails and should be on the list.

Posted by: Erick | June 11, 2008 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Anyone but Blanco!

Has to Landycakes... 9 goals, 6 assists in 9 games...

Posted by: Gooner | June 11, 2008 2:52 PM | Report abuse

No individual controls a game more than Blanco, and so far it's all been for the good.

Whitehill's replacement, at least for now, is Cox.

I guess we can now expect Whitehill's (and Osborne's) teammates to line up at the doctor's office and say, "I will have ACL surgery."

joe public fc is an awesome name for a club.

Posted by: longfellow | June 11, 2008 3:12 PM | Report abuse

Gotta agree...Reis has been clutch. He's got my vote.

Posted by: Kyle | June 11, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Joe Public FC. Average Joes from Dodgeball. Anybody else see resemblance?

Posted by: Garret | June 11, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

I also like the name Joe Public FC, however after a bit of research, they are owned by the terrible Jack Warner.

Good to see some different clubs from different nations involved in the Champions League. Seeing the same Mexican teams against the same MLS teams in two tournaments each year was getting old.

I think the poll has got it right so far. Donovan, Beckham, and Blanco definitely should be the 3 favorites.

Posted by: DCUMD | June 11, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Donovan,Beckham,Blanco sounds like the top 3 for sure.
John Busch isn't Matt Reis but he's been having a pretty good season at least on the road.
Kenny Cooper and Robbie Rogers have helped their teams more than they've hurt them.
Can someone clue me in to what happened with Burciaga Jr?
He started strong enough, but isn't playing now and isn't listed as injured.

Posted by: Dadryan | June 11, 2008 3:47 PM | Report abuse

Yup, I should have included Reis. Terrible oversight. Apologies to Revs Nation.

Posted by: Goff | June 11, 2008 3:47 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that both the Revs and Goats CCL home legs will be on September 3, a Wednesday.

Both teams are at home on Sunday 8/30, then have road games on Saturday 9/6 -- though Chivas USA goes cross country to Toronto and NE only goes (back) to Columbus.

Joe Public is a better name than Vibe CT 105 W Connection? That's like calling DC United.... Hot 99.5 DC United which by the way, I am not against.... try to abbreviate that, ESPN Bottom Line Ticker.

I can only imagine half of these ties will be played in Los Angeles, Miami or Houston to

of course Revs will probably play both games in T&T..

CHING?

in Houston's misfiring attack? You've got a very short memory...the TFC performance was the exception, not the rule in 2008.

I think you need to take him off...no votes out of 541 would kind of back me up!

New England Revolution v. Joe Public sounds like a bad court case.

Joe Public is definitely one of the best team names ever though. I must find a kit immediately.

Posted by: Niv | June 11, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

As much as I hated to - I had to vote for Becks.

In thinking about Donovan, I realized that w/o Beckham, Donovan doesn't get the passes or the service - or get the runs into space - without Beckham there.

Posted by: PotomacBoater | June 11, 2008 6:04 PM | Report abuse

The most interesting thing to me about Jozy going to Europe:

The club to which he's been signed has a 23,000-seat home stadium.

The club to which he will likely be loaned has a 19,000-seat home stadium.

The kicker? BOTH clubs had average attendances far higher than the Jersey Bulls.

Posted by: Juan-John | June 11, 2008 6:08 PM | Report abuse

Joe Public is right up there as a team name beside Newell's Old Boys.

ACLs suck, regardless of the gender.

I know that I'm just going off stats here, but how is the poll on here so close between Donovan and Blanco? Donovan's stats are ridiculous. 9 goals 6 assists through 9 games. Granted he's playing with Beckham, but those stats speak volumes.

Posted by: Dave | June 11, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Hey Dave
I voted for Donovan as well, though it really is a toss up between him and Beckham for me after thinking about it.
Blanco's is doing amazing things in Chicago though, and it is crazy to imaagine how BIG that team would be if their Stadium was in the city.
Check out the Chicago website though, there is an article in their that came out probably last week that talks about Blanco's affect on the team this year vs last year that speaks volumes about his importance in that line up. There's a lot of talk of the younger guys finally coming around and understanding his game, etc. And what's his name in the back gives him nothing but credit as well.
Blanco's game is far more cerebral, and with Donovan and Beckham it's kinda like Brady and Moss in the NFL last year. A deadly combo without a doubt. Blanco just doesn't have very good finishers up front. Barrett is a like Corky out there sometimes ain't he?
Blanco could lead that team to an MLS cup, or maybe the SS if they can win a couple at home.

Posted by: Dadryan | June 11, 2008 10:30 PM | Report abuse

I'll give another vote for Reis...

If every DP in MLS had the impact of Blanco, this league would be unreal. Sorry Becks - Blanco's a real game-changer.
