USA Roster for Argentina Match

Coach Bob Bradley's 19 choices are.....

GOALKEEPERS: Dominic Cervi, Brad Guzan, Tim Howard.

DEFENDERS: Dan Califf, Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Frankie Hejduk, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce.

MIDFIELDERS: Freddy Adu, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Sacha Kljestan, Eddie Lewis, Pablo Mastroeni.

FORWARDS: Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson.

Who would you like to see in the starting lineup?

Ticket sales have surpassed 70,000. Capacity is around 80,000 for this match.

Along those lines, a warning from the organizers:

Fans are asked to car pool or take NJ Transit, as the number of parking spots at the Meadowlands Sports Complex has been reduced due to the construction of the new stadium, Meadowlands Xanadu, the rail line and Giants training facility. All fans are also encouraged to arrive early to avoid late traffic issues. Parking lots open at 2:30 and gates will open at 6. Should the lots reach full capacity, vehicles will be diverted to an off-site parking location in Lyndhurst (approximately 2 miles from the stadium) and shuttle buses will be provided. Parking fee is $20 for cars.

Why do we persist with Eddie Johnson? He is simply not good enough. Call up Coop or someone who we need to test, not someone who we know will fail.

"Meadowlands Xanadu" is going to be some crazy multi-use area with an indoor mall, amusement park, and who knows what else.

At least the people I work with up there aren't too excited about it.

Dempsey is on down hill. Forget E. Johnson. He simply sucks yet Mr Bob doesn't know. Why can't he call up Rob Rogers from Columbus, he is way better than Johnson. Oh boy they are going to display...

It would be nice to see some fresh faces. Bradley did a great job of bringing in new faces when he took over, but not so much any more. Still, we do in fact have a bigger pool now than we did when Arena was still in charge. There are some suspect pieces in the pool to be sure, but you never know when one of those pieces will develop into something more. So all in all, I'd have to say I've been happy with the selection. Style of play and in game adjustments, not as much. But we'll see how things play out over the course of the next few years running up to the WC.

Posted by: Matte | June 6, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

no jozy and no cooper, I am pissed. So we have to choose between Dempsey who is so burnt out he's officially useless, Lanycakes who's coming off an injury and Eddie I put myself in good positions than tap the ball at the goalkeeper Johnson. Bob, seriously wtf?

Play Boca at holding mid.

Sit Bradley. He may lose transfer value in his current form.

Make sure Dolo and Pearce get a good nights sleep.

Put Landon up top. Unless another forward miraculously shows up.

DAVE,
i couldnt agree more. Fresh faces up front please! Dempsey needs rest, landon is coming back from injury, and EJ is worthless unless we play a JV team. why not let jaqua get a few minutes. give him a chance.

Very disappointing selection of forwards. Donovan and Dempsey are really better coming out of midfield. Maybe the secret is that Dominic Servi is really a great target forward and Bob Bradley has chosen Sunday as the date to unveil his new weapon...

Agree with many - JUST NO EJ ... and Bradley should be FIRED for gross incompetence for no other reason than continually naming this clod. Just how inept and unproductive does EJ have to be to NOT get called up???? And what happened to Boca??? Disappointed that so few of the U-20's that showed well last year have been subsequently ignored by Bradley for stiffs like DeMerit and EJ.

Spector being healthy might have changed the outcome of the previous two matches.

Altidore has Villareal to take care of.
Bocanegra should probably sit down with his agent now.
Bradley is tired.

Dempsey could probably use some rest, Johnson some courage.

Hopefully, Kenny Cooper will be around for a look during Barbados.

Posted by: B.A. | June 6, 2008 4:44 PM | Report abuse

Hmm, let's see: Landon Donovan scored in his debut with the senior team, is scoring at a high rate for his MLS team, provides an element to his game that none of the other forwards in the pool can offer... all of this describes Kenny Cooper, too. So why is only one of them getting called up?

Posted by: Kenobi | June 6, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

It would be nice to see Kenny "RoidRage" Cooper out there sooner than later.

Posted by: Dadryan | June 6, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

I'll agree with the rest of the world and say we need Cooper on the field. an Edu-Adu-Cooper triangle would be niiiice

Posted by: Dadryan | June 6, 2008 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Man, are we hurting for forwards, or what? How many American strikers playing in MLS could step up to the international level at this point? It will be nice to have Altidore available for WC qualifying, but we can't depend on him too much. He still needs a lot of experience.

Posted by: Score goals? | June 6, 2008 5:48 PM | Report abuse

How does Maestroeni keep getting call ups, he had no place on the '06 world cup team why is he still around.

Also I would like to see Guzan get the nod, I think Howard is better but if Guzan has a good showing he could get an offer from a legit european squad, not fulham or reading.

Guzan
Dolo - Goochi - DeMerit - Pearce
Edu - Bradley
Donovan - Adu - Klejsten
Dempsey

With NOOOO substitutions the rest of the call ups suck hard except for Beas but he really isnt in form and of course Howard, probably the best American player in the world today.

Also when are some more of the young guys like Ferrari, Johan Smith, Zizzo and yes Danny Szetela gonna get some love over the rest of these hacks.

Posted by: Patrick | June 6, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Without EJ playing, the lineup should be:

----------Donovan-----------
------------Adu-------------
-Lewis-----------------Emo--
-------Edu------Pablo-------
Pearce--Gooch--DeMerit--Dolo
-----------Howard-----------

Give Dempsey and Bradley a rest, they haven't looked good. And let DMB recover a little more so he's not playing a team that will juke his new ACL in half.

Otherwise, switch Donovan with emo kid and play EJ up top.

Posted by: Ryan | June 6, 2008 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Ryan-who is emo?

Posted by: adam | June 6, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Why does everyone have Gooch in their line-up? This is exactly the kind of game he should be anywhere near. He does well against physical teams, that try to get offense from crosses into the box, but he's terrible against teams with smaller, quick attackers. Messi will eat him alive!

Posted by: Bethesda, FC | June 6, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Goochi is in the lineup because he has to be, this squad has only 4 possible defenders to put out there who have a chance at not being horribly embarrassed, would you rather see Hejduk in the middle.

At least Goochi is good on set pieces.

----Bradley-----Szetela----

That was the U-20 attacking lineup that made it to the quarterfinals by scoring 12 goals (one own goal) in five games last year. Why aren't these guys playing games for the senior team (besides the coach's son, who has been terrible for the full team recently)? I'm sick of Bradley calling up the same group of guys who show nothing. What happened to the Bradley in the beginning when he was capping players like it was going out of style? Hopefully we can see this lineup along with Edu, Kljestan, Holden, McCarty, Feilhaber, and others at the Olympics. I'm convinced a full strength U-23 could beat the full team even with Nowak coaching them. At least I know they can score goals unlike the senior team.

Wake me up when Gibbs gets the nod.

Posted by: Glaucon | June 6, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Annnddd LET THE HEAD-HUNTING BEGIN!! If there is no positive result from this match (and I mean tie or victory), then i say Bradley gets sacked. He hasn't given Jozy OR Kenny Cooper a shot, and has given EJ wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much leeway.

Dear USSF:
Are you really going to let this guy coach your team? He doesn't trust MLS-grown talent, even though MLS has produced players like Brian McBride, Clint Dempsey, and Landon Donovan. He chooses players out of contract from 2nd or 3rd division European leagues. He cannot evaluate talent such as Robbie Rogers or Kenny Cooper. He does not deserve to be the coach of a self-proclaimed regional giant.

I'd rather have Peter Nowak as coach. Bradley was fine for a club team, but cannot handle the reigns of a National team. Please search abroad for a FOREIGN coach (the last few Americans have lacked in quality), and do NOT keep your next interim coach.

Thank you, have a nice day!

******************************

Many of these guys have gotten call-ups but overall you underestimate the gap in level of play between a u20 World Cup and the real thing.

Zizzo and Szetela haven't done enough to show they belong in the full USMNT player pool but may have been called in to some of the Euro-based players only camps earlier this year.

Many of Bradley's callups have been influenced as much by that - trying to spare players from missing games in their respective Euro or MLS seasons - as by whether they would have a realistic chance to be among the current 23-man team.

But, yeah, Bradley would relieve the disappointment of lots of US fans like myself by calling in a Robbie Rogers or a Kljestan over a past-it Josh Wolff.

I just don't think you can expect last year's full u20 team to succeed this year at the senior level or even at the Olympic level.

wheres the euro 2008 coverage in the the Post?????

Posted by: jahs | June 6, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Bob Bradley is by no means capable of handling national team and compete with international powerhouse teams. He can't see beyond what his abiltiy is which is basically nothing. Sits like a sick bird peeping from a tree. I don't understand why his own son can't produce effective play when he is on dad's team unlike lifting the team in his club. Why is this? It's has to do with how he gets coached and put him in a uncomfortable position not to mentioned lackluster players around.

Posted by: factcheck | June 6, 2008 10:07 PM | Report abuse

It seems like Cheatin' Bob is more concerned with getting contracts for the Euro-based players than fielding a competitive team. If I hadn't spent so much money on the tickets, I would be fine with that.

EJ? No thanks. Frankencooper would be a better bet. I don't understand why there aren't more people pleading for Arturo Alvarez to get regular caps.

Posted by: Seth|NYC | June 6, 2008 10:16 PM | Report abuse

EJ, Hejduk and Lewis? These three games have been against the best competition in the world and this is the best that we can roll out. We don't even deserve to be in the top 50 in the world.

Posted by: Why | June 6, 2008 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Why - Why do you include Lewis in your remark? He continues to be remarkably consistent every time he puts on a US jersey.

Posted by: Because | June 6, 2008 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Guzan is not the second best keeper we have. That would be Hahnemann.

I would also like to see Cooper up front -- I've been saying that for a couple of years now.

However, I cannot abide the mindlessness of the attacks on Bradley, from a bunch of folks who know as much about coaching a national team as the groundscrew at RFK. Do you people actually read you asinine comments before yo publish them to the world?

Meadowlands Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls was already taken.

Posted by: CK | June 7, 2008 12:10 AM | Report abuse

I "second" the call to bring back McBride. He is still in great form and can contribute significantly. Now that he is coming back to MLS, the travel will not be as great a burden. At a minimum, we should include him for the Mexico qualifiers where we can't afford Eddie Johnson's egg-shell approach to being a striker. EJ, Cooper, Jozy, et al. can continue to develop against lesser opponents and, hopefully, be ready to step up for the finals in South Africa.

I think the parking lot will be open before 2:30. When I went to the LA v RB game last year (66,000 people) I got there real early to tailgate and there was no one there to take my $20. I got in early and for free. So maybe they mean people will start taking money @ 2:30 but I bet the lot will be open. I plan on being there at around noon so I guess I will see.

If those on par with groundskeepers at RFK get your goat, how brutally hard it must be for you to "abide" the criticism of the many who know much more than groundskeepers at RFK. Not that we have a national team manager who is one of them.

Sold out Giants Stadium, sold out stadium in San Diego a few days back. Soccer is, indeed, on its way of becoming a major sport in the US. Argentina's magicians are well worth it, though.
With Euro'08 on ESPN, the profile of the sport is rising. Top 3 spectator sport within 20 years? Easy, with demographic changes and all.
