USA Roster Unveiled

Here's the 18-man list for Sunday's qualifier at Barbados. Don't read too much into the choices: The game doesn't mean much, most MLS players have club commitments this weekend, Tim Howard is rehabbing a bad back, Eddie Johnson is sick, other Euro-based players need a summer break.....

GOALKEEPERS: Dominic Cervi, Brad Guzan, Chris Seitz.
DEFENDERS: Carlos Bocanegra, Dan Califf, Jay DeMerit, Drew Moor, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce.
MIDFIELDERS: DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Sacha Kljestan, Eddie Lewis, Danny Szetela, John Thorrington.
FORWARDS: Freddy Adu, Chad Barrett, Chris Rolfe.

Who would you like to see in the starting lineup?

Sasha Kljestan is a punk.

Let's bunker down and win this thing:

---------------Guzan--------------
-DeMerit-Califf-Gooch-Boca-Pearce-

WHERE'S COOPER?!?!?!? ;)

Safe to say Guzan gets the start!

Posted by: RK | June 20, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Seitz come in at the second half. He's been called up a ton recently. Let's see him.

Posted by: elopingcamel | June 20, 2008 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Where's Kenny Cooper? WTF?

Kljestan is a cold-blooded killer who ATTACKS and DEFENDS unlike most American midfielders who only DEFEND.

Keep your eye on this guy.

So, does Bradley just really like the way that Cervi folds his laundry?

How long is this US Soccer job placement internship last?

Posted by: Kim | June 20, 2008 2:28 PM | Report abuse

I thought there was an off chance SQ would be called in, since he's suspended for the weekend. Oh well.

Posted by: Nick | June 20, 2008 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Cooper has a game on Saturday, which is why he wasn't called.

This list is basically a bunch of Euro's, some out of contract folks, and Chivas/Chicago players. Danny Szetela is the only choice that struck me as being unusual.

Posted by: Jayboy | June 20, 2008 2:31 PM | Report abuse

In a previous thread, Goff explained that Cooper has an MLS match this weekend, and that preference is being given to people who played last night, and who thus are free on the weekend.

Posted by: tri-village | June 20, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

I would like to see Troy Perkins get a chance.

No bunkering. An 8-nil advantage is the perfect time to experiment with a more attacking formation and style of play. And let Adu run the show, he's the best player in the pool.
So allow him to be creative and start buildikng the team around him.

So, doesn't Drew Moor have the same game as Cooper? I'm not buying it.

except that Drew Moor plays for the same team as Cooper, so that doesn't really make much sense?

Posted by: pat | June 20, 2008 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Mr. Goff, do you put the roster into positions, or does it come that way? Not sure why Freddy's not in the midfield.

Sorry, guys. My 9-0-1 formation was supposed to be witty. I failed...

Posted by: Joe Doc | June 20, 2008 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Those are the positions listed on the official roster. Players often fill various roles, so it's wise to ignore those classifications.

I have no explanation for Moor being called in and Cooper not, other than the fact that Bradley needs another outside back (he doesn't need any more forwards, given the USA's 8-0 lead on aggregate).

Posted by: Goff | June 20, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

as for Cervi, what the heck else is he supposed to be doing? unless he gets a trial somewhere, he can't do much of anything, so he might as well get some time in Nats Camp getting training. he's never going to play, so why call in a player who is in season for a spot that's never going to be anything else but a few days of training?

at what point, however, shoudl he just take the money from Chicago? heck, what can we trade to Chicago to get his rights?

Posted by: northzax | June 20, 2008 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Given Barrett's skill as a finisher maybe we should loan him to Barbados for the weekend.

Posted by: John | June 20, 2008 3:08 PM | Report abuse

I believe the gloves are off in the MLS Goals race and Cooper is a strong contender.
It would have been cool to see him in the first leg, but as of now he's needed by his club team more than the US need him this weekend.
I expected more from both Rolfe and Barrett this year. Hopefully they don't make fools of themselves this weekend.
hope Freddy starts.

Here is what I would like to see

------------Rolfe-------------

Szetela------Adu--------Klejstan
--------Lewis----Thorrington-----

Pearce---------------------Moor
--------Califf---DeMerit--------

----------Guzan-----------------

Here is probably what will be more likely:

-------Adu-------Rolfe--------

Beasley-------------------Lewis
-----Bradley-----Klejstan--------

DeMerit------------------Pearce
--------Bocanegra----Onyewu-------

----------Guzan------------------

No matter who starts, I want Bradley to let them play and let Adu dictate the attack.

Posted by: Matt Johnston | June 20, 2008 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Any one except Chad Barret who just happens to be the most useless piece of s*#t in MLS, how many chances do you need to score?? just retire and get it over with...

Posted by: Carlos | June 20, 2008 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Barrett will make a fool of himself if he gets on the pitch. He played against Chivas last night and was dreadful. He missed two can't miss opportunities. Perhaps he has been watching Johnson too much.....When Chicago brings Mcbride in Barrett will likely only be a sub for his club team.

These players should be representing!

Seitz
Albright-parkhurst- Sean Franklin-Randolph
Holden-simms-Danny Szetela-Davis
Cooper-adu

HEY! BOB O' , WAZ DA MATTA! WEE CHA!
We should be expanding our player pool not neglecting it....

Goff maybe you should start a strictly "why don't you retire already chad barret?" thread.

Posted by: Dadryan | June 20, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Wow. That's like the bigsoccer poster's wet dream roster.

Posted by: Drew-ROC | June 20, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

What's the deal with Cervi?

If this guy doesn't sign with a top league team somewhere in the western world during the summer transfer window, he needs to be dropped.

I kinda feel bad for him, he wanted a better deal from MLS/Fire and decided to walk when he couldn't get one. I thought he'd land in some smaller Euro league pretty quickly. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Albania . . . somewhere!

But the more this plays out, the more Cervi looks like he's headed to the USL. If so, he can say bye-bye to USNT camps in the future until he eventually moves up professionally.

Maybe he should go back to school and get a MBA and learn a little about business and leverage.

Much as I will be keeping rapt attention to see if we can cover the spread against Barbados, I would LOVE to see Bermuda give Jack Warner and T&T a nice steaming bowl of 'shut the hell up' and take them out of qualifying.

I don't think Dominic Cervi doesn't belong on the roster over the following (in no particular order): Steve Cronin, Quentin Westburg, Troy Perkins, Joe Cannon, Will Hesmer, Matt Pickens, Matt Reis, John Busch, Jon Conway, and Preston Burpo. Maybe: Josh Lambo, Ray Burse, and Kyle Reynish.

The real question is will Danny Szetela sport the mohawk

Posted by: Ameobi | June 20, 2008 5:15 PM | Report abuse

After last night I have a lot of confidence in Chad Barrett for Sunday. Considering the two beautiful chances he screwed up he's due for a great game.

Posted by: Oscar | June 20, 2008 7:20 PM | Report abuse

There are several pieces of evidence that Bradley is the wrong man to manage the team. Here are two of the most damning.

1. Josh Wolff gets called in and starts.
2. Chad Barrett is even considered and, yes, gets called in.

I rest my case.

Posted by: Sean | June 20, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I'd rather have Kenny Cooper than Chad"I cant score"Barrett.

What, I'm seriously the first person to mention Benny?

Dude has more talent and plays internationals with more intensity than 2/3 of the team, and could really use some playing time given his club situation.

I mean what's the deal, has he just totally fallen off Bradley's radar? It'd be a huge mistake to not be looking to Benny for 2010.

You might be on to something. Maybe Bradley's trying to be nice. Of course, it didn't help as FC Dallas failed to even score last night with Cooper in the lineup.
