DCU and Dallas Rumblings

*La Prensa in Honduras is reporting that Platense (Puerto Cortes) is close to a deal to loan 24-year-old midfielder Carlos Will Mejia to D.C. United for the remainder of the MLS season. DCU GM Dave Kasper said he had no comment. One person familiar with the player said that, if things are worked out soon, Mejia would come for a trial next week.

*I am getting word from several contacts that Norwegian power Rosenborg is still very much interested in Dallas all-star forward Kenny Cooper and might be willing to increase its offer. One source believes a deal is in the works, while another said, "It's just a possibility, not a done deal yet." Messages left for his reps were not returned.

If the Mejia rumor is true, doesn't it seem like we're heavy on the midfielders? On one hand we need steady mids, but I'm hoping a forward or two will be arriving, in addition to a keeper. Sounds like another overhaul if all my wishes come true. That's not my plan, but we certainly need some bodies right now.

Good for Cooper. I love him.

Interesting for DC. Release a goalie and bring in a midfielder...

Let's not mistake quantity at midfield with quality.

Posted by: Terp | July 17, 2008 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Well said, Terp!!!!!!!!!

True dat.

Posted by: Beaker | July 17, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

the question is, can he play on the wing? can he cross the ball?

Posted by: jrnail23 | July 17, 2008 6:03 PM | Report abuse

I know I'm not the only one here who thinks Santino is really a forward, not a winger/midfielder.

I also know I'm not the only one who isnt that high on Dyachenko right now. Thompson looks like a nice find as a utility Rback/Rmid, but I wouldnt mind more depth at A-mid or a more attacking options on the wing to compliment Fred or whoever else is out there.

Well said, thecheat. It's not like the quantity that we have now presents a ton of quality either.

Ives mentioned something about DC shopping around a midfielder...wonder if we trade rod for a draft pick and then pickup this guy or the guy on trial...and still get a goalie.

Posted by: strago | July 17, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Or maybe the increase in quantity is in anticipation of a trade for a keeper or defender? (He says hopefully, with fingers crossed...)

Carlos Will Mejia, 24 (1983), labeled and MF and called a FW on Wikipedia, #9.

CD Platense finished 8th in Honduras' Clausura, 9th in the previous Apertura (out of 10).

Playerhistory.com shows 4 goals, 5 yellows, and 1 red card during the Clausura for Mejia.

Mejia has 4 caps for Honduras, scoring in a 9-1 rout of Nicaragua in the 5th place match in the 2007 UNCAF tournament.

He was not called up for the home-and-home series with Puerto Rico.

...What I'm saying is: I know nothing.

Cooper to Rosenborg?
Another Yank Abroad headed to a lower tier league. Ugh?

Goff I heard somewhere else that there are some German and English teams interested in Cooper and that he has a UK work permit so playing in England wouldn't be a problem. Is this true? I wonder what other teams are in play in addition to Rosenblah?

Posted by: Johnny | July 17, 2008 7:23 PM | Report abuse

The best thing for DCU right now is to get a good midfielder. They should get Eliseo Quintanilla. He's been playing really well as of late, and he has matured from his previous days here in DC.

Whos up for Eliseo again?

We gave 'Tino a chance. Why not him, he's even better than 'Tino.

Posted by: Fulvio | July 17, 2008 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps we should bring back Donnet as well. (But he's not better than Tino!)

Posted by: Towson | July 17, 2008 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Wow...a lots of updates today. I like it. I have no clue about this player so hope whatever is DCU doing will be a good one.

Posted by: arlington4united | July 17, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

He has number so if he is trully a number 9 I would love that.

I know Rosenborg does not play in the best league, but didn't they beat Chelsea last year in the Champs League? Maybe a few good showings by Cooper in Europe will get him a move to a better team or a call by Papa Bradley

Goff, is DC United looking for an alternative site if Maryland thing doesn't work out? Seems like this thing is going to drag forever.

Quintanilla??? Please, he is slower than Kris Kelderman is today. Beyond all the tangible needs such as a keeper, another forward and another flank player team speed has got to be at the top of the list.

Fred and Martinez are the only two players in the top 14 with any speed whatsoever.

Entertaining 3-3 tie from Cowlumbus tonight. Josh Wolff returns to play the 2nd half for KC and scores the tying goal with about 15 minutes left (easy finish but nice run to get open for Jewsbury's cross).

Brian Carroll got onto a Barros Schelotto pass at the near post in the 90th minute and it looked like Jimmy Conrad lifted him airborne with a tackle from behind but Abby Okulaja thought it was OK.

I remember driving up to Puerto Cortes to see the fruit from United Fruit company get loaded on ships to go the US.

What about looking for some help in the back? Are in defensive players being considered?

Posted by: glen burnie guy | July 17, 2008 11:02 PM | Report abuse

Donnet is a much more proven commodity than Tino.

Just sayin....

I know Donnet wanted more money than we were willing to give him, but given how things have worked out with our midfield, I'd take him starting on either wing over any of our current starters, including Fred, whom I feel should either play CAM or Forward.

Man, it seems like we're getting ready to bring a new guy in every day. It's almost like MLSRumors.net! (no offense)

Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2008 11:41 PM | Report abuse

Ouch. MLSRumors.net, that's rough.

Goff, are you blogging from a phone or blackberry today? All of your posts are short blurbs. (No offense. If I say that it means I can say whatever I want to you right?)

Just curious.

I like MLS rumors. Hell we need as many rumors as possible! I get bored not seeing anything new on that site. Its not like there is all that much news out there anyway.

I wonder if it is more of a "United Park" similar to Redskins' Park, also similar to what United had originally out in Loudoun with offices and training facilities.

Christopher, you can say anything you want as long as you say "With all due respect" before it.

"With all due respect, Mr. Dennit, I didn't realize you got an experimental surgery to have your balls removed."

I fully endorse a european move for Blog Idol Kenny Cooper. Anything that might help him catch the eye of Blog Nemesis Bob Bradley.

Hey, if you had to play games in the blistering heat of texas in july, you'd probably start looking for a move to the arctic circle as well.

"The fact that Cooper's father was a native of England helped grease the skids for Cooper as United did not need to acquire a work permit for him"

The skirts at Rosenberg games MUCH hotter than the skirts at FC Dallas games

Advantage Rosenberg

Loudon? Does the Metro run there? Advantage P.G. County (both Greenbelt and New Carrolton -- Greenbelt only being a problem after Nats' games, since Metro insists on turning around the trains at Mount Vernon Square station).

Does this include the $60 cab fare back and forth from Penn Station to the Swamp.

Yes, you and a friend will go in the lap of luxury from Penn Station on the PATH train to Hoboken where you can ride with the 5 MetroStars players who carpool in their 1989 Honda Civic to the stadium, because that's affordable living in the New York area on $17,000 a year....

Here's the Honduran update from 18 July on Carlos Will Mejia. Looks like his Honduran club coach says he will be loaned to DCU for the remainder of the season, starting next week. The coach claims there are "only little details to fix" before finalizing the deal. And local press is calling him a forward. Hmm...
