Matchnight: DCU-Dynamo

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
'Come in,' she said, 'I'll give you, shelter from the storm'

Another maelstrom is a-comin' to Estadio RFK. (That is what they tell us, anyway.)

Hopefully no blood on the tracks or buckets of rain.

Thanks, Bob.

Okay, after two postponements, let's try this again: United-Dynamo, 7:30 ET.

No standard TV coverage in the D.C. area. Crank up your Direct Kick package to watch it live or tune into Tony Limarzi at WFED (1050 AM) or www.federalnewsradio.com

[UPDATES BELOW]

*United officials tell me that, if necessary, they will wait all night to get this game in. No curfews apply tonight. That could be a problem for Metro riders, who will need to make the last train at midnight.

*DCU GM Dave Kasper said "it's possible" that Jaime Moreno would play for Bolivia in the Aug. 6 friendly against Guatemala at RFK. "We will talk about it," added Kasper, who has yet to receive an official request from the Bolivian federation.

*If DCU reaches the U.S. Open Cup final, it's possible the game would be moved to Sept. 3 from Aug. 26.

*The target date for Gonzalo Peralta's return is Aug. 10, but a little beyond that for Marcelo Gallardo because his hernia surgery was more extensive, Kasper said.

DCU LINEUP: Wells; P. Carroll, Namoff, Burch, Martinez; McTavish, Simms, Fred, Thompson; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Thorpe, Zaher, Dyachenko, Cordeiro, Vide, Doe, Kirk. (Carroll is the right back, Namoff and Burch in the middle, McTavish moves to the right flank with Fred playmaking.)

As usual, this is the gathering place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

Game is on. 15th minute. 0-0 but Houston has had almost all of the play. Wells has had to make a few saves, including one where he almost misjudged it and barely tipped the ball over the bar.

16th minute - yellow card to Eddie Robinson - hard foul on Emilio.

Martinez has been burned by Mullan three times - if Mullan could shoot better Houston would be up by at least one more goal.

Martinez keeps playing him like he is going wide, Mullan then makes same move inside, and blows past Martinez.

United looking slightly better now. Slightly.

24th minute.

Substitution 25th minute - Dyachenko in for P. Carroll.

Ugh.

Posted by: isaac101 | July 23, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Martinez does not need to play so damn high in the attack if he's getting burned consistently. Thompson has a good work rate, so let me not poop on the wingers too much.

Posted by: spike_2.0 | July 23, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

DeRosario released with a long pass out of the back - Wells comes WAAAY out of goal and makes nice tackle on streaking DeRo to save a goal.

Looks like McTavish has moved back to defense with the sub.

Then Wells makes another great save on DeRo. Defense looking really shaky.

I wonder there is something wrong inside the club and all the players that somehow effects the situation on the ground. What is wrong with this team. All the sudden they are stinking again. Is it the coach that really don't know how to handle and place people on the position when some players are injured? It keeps changing and seems like it messes up the system or are the players really suck at this point? I am running out of answers.

Posted by: Du Du Mop | July 23, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

34th minute. Houston still in control.

Looks like Fred is playing on the left now - to help Martinez. Thompson on right. Dyachenko in middle.

Posted by: isaac101 | July 23, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

29th minute-Shots: 11-1 Dynamo. I just can't believe Soehn had the nerve to put in Dyachenko for Carroll. That's an insult to Carroll! He shoulda put in Doe or Cordeiro or Vide or someone who won't go on the field and act like a complete retard. In other words: Soehn and Dyachenko go bye-bye, and hello (again) to Bruce Arena :-)

Posted by: person | July 23, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Who's out?

Quaranta: played very well on the wing, nobody has cemented that spot in his absence.

Gallardo: has done very little when in. Not missed, IMO.

Peralta: Many rode him because he's slow. But he slows down opposing runners and is solid.

The major lack is Peralta. The back line just doesn't have any presence or cohesiveness. Gonzalo Martinez picked a hell of a time to lay down a Cleveland steamer.

I think when a player consistently uses the wrong technique, that's a coaching issue. Why hasn't the coach corrected his tackling technique? It's not unheard of for a QB coach to change a NFL QB's throwing motion. Especially when the QB is a new draft pick.

Yes that was Soehn.

And props to Marcello for the elbow.

But I'll pimp-slap Landycakes for half the dough. From the DP I need production: assists, goals, a physical presence.

As an attacking midfielder, his production's been mediocre. Now, many say that the team doesn't make runs, and the wingers don't know how to play, and Emilio was loafing for half the season, yada yada. And it's all at least partly true.

But this is the freaking MLS. Not even the Championship. He's facing defenders who get paid in baloney sandwiches. He's an Audi in a league of Chevrolets.

I understand the whole "no curfew" idea, but personally I think it would be ridiculous to make the players wait 2-3 hours and then have them come back out at 11 or 12 to finish a game on a soaked field. Call me crazy...

Yes, more puddles than grass. You can see how the water is accumulating where the old baseball diamond was.

Still a lightening delay. They announced they are going to finish the match.

Anyone think the Dynamo are sick of DC at this point? Considering they've had to stay here since Saturday? The only one I see enjoying DC is old Bozilla.

Does anyone know if P.Carrol was hurt. Why would Soehn sub him after only 25 minutes. From what everyone is saying, he had nothing to do with the goal. I'm confused?

If you're so sick and tired of your stadium than nevermind these comments I made a few years back:

"Thank you Kevin for this D.C. United jersey and congratulations on your terrific season. It is great to see over 20,000 fans here at RFK supporting D.C. United. It is my hope that your fans will soon be coming to your brand new soccer stadium at Poplar Point in Anacostia. World class fans, and a world class team like D.C. United, deserve a world class stadium. And I am going to make it a priority to help you build that stadium. Thank you -- congratulations and good luck to the Black-and-Red!"

Why The Sub?

I think it was because Soehn wanted to play 10 v 11 for the rest of the match

Posted by: Uniter | July 23, 2008 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Why the Sub?

We had to get Mctavish back into the defensive line and bring on an attacking midfielder, so Carroll was the odd man out because of this... they should have started Doe or Dyachenko instead of Carroll in the first place and let Moreno be the playmaker... Pat did nothing wrong..

Posted by: Anonymous | July 23, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I am not a DC native, just a fan of the team. I do not know if there's some local deep rooted connection to RFK, but from an outsider's viewpoint, I would pay good money to push the plunger that was attached to all the explosives necessary to bring that place down. It is embarassing for a professional sports team, especially one of such prominence in its own league, to have a stadium with this utter lack of infrastructural quality. Embarassing.

Posted by: FHS | July 23, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

If I had to be stuck someplace for a few days like the Dynamo, D.C. wouldn't be a bad choice. But I'm biased since I entered this world at Walter Reed.

Subbing Carroll after 25 minutes is simply absurd. Granted he shouldn't have started in the first place considering the fact that the defense hasn't really "clicked" over the last few games and could use some quality time together, but to pull him after such a short period on the field is not the way to develop a young player. Sacrificing a player's confidence in order to save a coach's butt after selecting a poor line-up is just another gaffe in the era of "Soehn me nothing". This team is an unorganized mess and has been most of the season.

And now I see my team, the team I love and worship, playing in a stadium where it leaks inside (even if it hasn't rained) and the lights go out repeatedly interrupting or even canceling games.

If ever there was a case for withholding rent, Will Chang, Kevin Payne, Victor McFarlane and Co. have it.

If they are unable to continue, Houston wins, 1-0

Once the field is deemed playable and the lightning has gone, the players will need 20 minutes for warmups

From what I've been told, the game must restart by midnight and end by 1 a.m.

Just got home to Vienna. It is pouring here again, which means that is headed into to DC. Goffer just reported that there is no curfew for the game, and that it will be finished tonight, no matter how long it takes. Since it stopped in the 53 minute, it can't be official. Magic number is 60 or 65 right? If the league calls it, United should file a protest.

Just got back from the game. Would really like to know if the baseball reconfiguration screwed up the drainage system.

I realize this is a lot of water, but when the skins played I don't remember these types of problems. Additionally, United's early seasons had lots of games in the rain with no issues. Now, puddles are nearly always present during storms.

NOte to united: buy more squeegees. I'm pretty sure 50% of the fans would help clear water for a shot at 3 points.

Well, I got home just in time to put on the game and here Ching put this out of reach. It was pathetic there tonight -- horribly outplayed. They played better on Saturday night. No one other than Thompson and Namoff even seemed to care. They lack the skills that Houston has -- even though it only made a difference on the one play, when Mullen schooled Martinez. Also, Wells planted his feet in concrete on that one. He made some nice plays, but didn't even move on the first goal. I think this team right now can be summed up in one sentence. After giving up that first goal, and needing offense. Soehn looked at his bench and sent in Rod D.

Actually the Houston announcers were talking about how during the break in play some fan was heckling the Houston coach and the coach went over and got in the fans face and started jawing back at them. They were saying the coach wasn't going to let his team come out flat and would keep the intensity up (and getting into a verbal spat with the fan helped show that). So, in a way yes it is the coaches responsibility to keep the players fired up and to fire them up.

I thought that was kinda funny, too. Another game, another yellow card for Rod D. Still, I'm not entirely sure it was worth the trip. I did eat and drink well, and make merry, though. One stand had bottled Mexican beers. With the rain-out I had a chance to grab a sausage and some pupusas. Yummy! And washed down with Sam Adams.

I never thought I'd say this but, I wish the soccer matched the fine fare served up at RFK tonight. I also enjoyed checking out the concert bills that are left over from Red, Hot & Blue. It's like archeology, combing through the ruins of RFK. I wish I knew what to do about the ruins of the DC United team.

When Carroll needed to exit the game, Soehn looks down his bench and he can (a) put in Doe, slide Moreno back into the center midfield, and move McTavish to the backline; (b) sub in Kirk, have McTavish fill in for Carroll; (c) sub in Cordeiro, same; or (d) sub in Vide, slide Fred to wing, McTavish for Carroll.

Tommy went with none of the above.

What does Rod bring to the squad that merits passing over Doe, Kirk, Cordeiro, and Vide for the initial substitution?

Total crap. Houston looks a cut above DC across the board, everything DC lacks they have: organized defense and speed on the wings. Hell Bozwell even looks like he's found some pace.

Count this as a rebuilding or debuilding season cause the Cups aren't coming if the last 4 games are any indication, outscored 10-4. Soehn has created an unorganized mess of a team, with hands down the worst defense United has ever had.

Perhaps instead of trying to unearth the next S. American basement sale UTD should take a page from the Houston book and actuallly try to recognize and develop young American attacking talent.

Dyachenko was selected in the 2006 MLS Expansion Draft by Toronto FC. (Draft took place on Nov. 17, 2006)

On December 21, 2006, Soehn replaced Nowak as the head coach at United.

Dyachenko was re-acquired, however, by DC United on February 1, 2007 in a trade for a first round pick in the 2008 MLS Entry Draft.

Soehn was coach when Dyachenko was picked up from Toronto. Figures. Maybe the 2 have a secret love affair.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 24, 2008 1:13 AM | Report abuse

well, that certainly wasn't worth waiting for.

I blame Soehn and Wells in that order. What the heck was that starting line up supposed to be? 10 defenders and 1 forward? Why take Carroll out and put in Whyastinko? Was he hurt? I thought he was playing fine. The goal came from the Martinez/Burch side.

Once again we had no midfield. And with Luci all alone up top we were never going to score. Doe made an immediate impact but didn't really get enough time. Onstad stoned him twice with amazing saves.

The second goal is all on Wells. He has GOT to come out and at least punch that ball away. Instead he started out and stopped in no man's land like always.

Everyone was very surly after the long wait...the crowd that was left and the players for both teams. It was funny watching that classless jerk Kinnear jump over the rail and try to pick a fight with Bryan Namoff (the fan in question was wearing a Namoff jersey). Dude should have let him take a swing at him.

Lots of liberties were being taken and DC was clearly very frustrated. I don't get the call on Gonzo. Did he already have a yellow? Because Salazar showed him yellow and then red. Very weird. It was certainly a brisk tackle but didn't look that bad to me. We will really miss him next match.

He's got some, but for big, dorky american full back's it doesn't seem hard to knock all of DC's "playmakers" off the ball.
I like Doe. Too bad we didn't see him.
Dychenko as someone who is way smarter than me stated has a weakness with decision making, so he's really better off not making any other than shooting as soon as he gets the ball...
Everyone knows he's a tard on the balll, so they swarm him or draw fouls from him( not very difficult.)

Just got back and trying to get my trench feet to dry out before I hop into bed.

That ref sucked. It looked like Gonzalo Martinez tackle was ALL ball when De Ro was still closing in from about 2 feet away. I had a feeling this ref really wanted to abandon the game and call it for Houston after 53 minutes. The field sucked but the game could have been resumed 30-45 minutes earlier. It wouldn't have been ideal but every player out there (and just about anyone who was played organized soccer at any level) has probably experienced worse.

Soehn's starting formation was bizarre. Martinez on the left and Burch w Namoff paired centrally. McTavish at right mid? I assume Fred was supposed to be the attacking mid likeGallardo or Christian Gomez but he played wide and there was a gaping empty space in the center of our offense til Dyachenko came in on the early sub.

We were significantly outplayed for almost the entire game. Good we don't have too crowded a schedule over the next few weeks. Maybe some players will get healthy and the team will pull out of its funk.

Posted by: Goose | July 24, 2008 2:40 AM | Report abuse

Assuming the injuries are why DC stinks right now, what caused all the injuries? Bad luck? Poor training? Poor officiating that lets other teams get away with beating up on our team? Dehydration? Too many older players? Optimism (picking up injury-prone players because they have talent)? Lack of commitment to being match fit on the part of the players?

Figure that out and fix it. Regardless of who is responsible, it has to get fixed.

One of the not-Nowak qualities we liked in Soehn last year was that he didn't play the starters into the ground. So what changed?

More people are on the list of trial. I don't have much faith on that. If we need to put them on trials that means they are not that good anyways so a few play wouldn't show the real quality of the player and we clearly don't have couching talent to recognize who is good and who is not. So let's see!

The trial list? Come on that's like waiting for the cavalry to arrive. The major problem with this team is the man at the helm, the starting line-up last night made that painfully clear. Worst defense in team history and the longest home losing streak to match. Brillant.

I take offense to that! When I'm reclining on my couch, soaking up a match, I provide plenty of thoughtful insight and player evaluation as the game progresses to whomever might be in the room (usually no one).

Eden is burning!
either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts
must have the courage
for the changing of the guards.

DC United is still the most decorated team in MLS history. No other MLS team can match both trophies and name brand known around the world.

Isn't there some way that we could hook up the 11 VWs by the VW house during the storm and let them clear the field of water? Put squeegies on the front and fix their tires so they didn't ruin the turf?
