Matchnight: U.S. Open Cup
If eight matches are played and only a few people see them (either in person or on online video), do they make a sound?
This is our blog-thread dilemma tonight as eight MLS teams face five USL1 and three USL2 sides in Open Cup action in Boyds, Md.; New Britain, Conn.; Cary, N.C.; Annapolis, Md.; Bridgeview, Ill.; Frisco, Tex.; Daniel Island, S.C.; and Tukwila, Wash.
Go to www.usopencup.com for links to match trackers, radio broadcasts and video feeds.
And feel free to comment on any of the matches this evening.
I will be at Maryland SoccerPlex for the DCU-Rochester game, and although my contributions in the comments section will be limited by print-edition deadline pressures, I hope you will join your fellow supporters for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.
UPDATE:
Now it can be told: One of the goalkeepers recently presented to United as a possible signing was Wolfsburg's Simon Jentzsch, who has since gone to a Turkish club. He was simply too expensive for an MLS team. Jentzsch, 32, is 6 feet 5 and was Wolfsburg's starter until around the winter break last season, when he was dropped from the lineup. Even DCU's Volkswagen connections (VW owns Wolfsburg) did not help.
DCU LINEUP: Wells; P. Carroll (right), McTavish, Burch, Martinez (left); Kirk (right), Stratford, Dyachenko, Cordeiro (left); Doe, Emilio. Subs: Thorpe, Namoff, Zaher, Thompson, Murphy, Fred, Simms, Mediate.

Hey Goff, don't forget about the Canadian Champions League match (in about 10 minutes!) between Vancouver and Toronto. I'm heading up there this weekend (nothing football related) and I've been poking around seeing what the Reds are up to. And here it is...

Goff,
I would like to thank you for your dedication for following very DC United game and providing us in dept reports every single time. You are the only reporter who does this for every game that involves DC United. I can't point one single reporter who is as dedicated for their local team as you for any other MLS leage. Even the Washington Times reporter whose DCU v LA game report link to behindthebadge has attended the game and was very happy to watched. Perhaps it's your work that brings more people to read about DC United and MLS in general and realize there is a special leage game going on. Thank you!

With a wifi or wireless broadband connection up there, someone should be able to take a hi-res webcam and stream the game so we can watch it using sopcast or some other video p2p client...

I'll not bash the USOC any more this year. I have done enough of that. The USOC is what it is. I just hope whoever DC throwas out there plays well and does not get hurt.
I am also curious as to why games like this are not played someplace like Ludwig field at UMD if they cant be played at RFK.

We really do have it great with Senor Goff leading the Insider Nation.

OK, one more bash at the Cup before I get in line and start calling the press box at WakeMed Field in Cary for up to the minute scores on Kansas City-Carolina....
I still don't buy the carrot of a place in the qualifying round of the CCC. Ask any player if they would rather have $500 in prize money or NOT have to play a mid-week game in Panama in THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER. And you thought RFK was a little steamy on Sunday.
Also, do the players get any extra compensation for playing more games, aside from the gold rush at the end of the tournaments? MLB plays 162 games, Pointy-Ball 16 games, NBA 82... MLS could be 30, could be 40, we'll let you know.

Down the tubes? Huh?
The profit margin for the Post Co. is not what it used to be, but make no mistake, the company makes a TON of money. (By comparison, the Wash Times has never made a dime in its history.)
The Post's Kaplan education arm is the big money-maker these days.

=========================================
That is an understatement. The Times has probably never come within 200 million dimes of making a dime in its history. The funny thing is that the Times has just as secure a future as the Post, insofar as its owners seem to be willing to squander billions and billions of dimes as far as the eye can see.

Kante is one of their strongest players(defender). With him out it will be a struggle. Gary Brookes is a good winger. DC should give him a look. He has speed and can score goals.

A conundrum:
If DC United posts a shutout and only a few people see it, does it make a sound?

I'd like to see CP Baltimore become a USL-1 team whenever they get their stadium built. I think it would be great for their league and for this area.

Haven't heard anything new about a stadium. I like their location now, I just haven't had the opportunity to go see them yet.

Sounders' goal came off of a corner kick taken by Josh Gardner. If only DC United could get a player like that!! Oh wait...

A Sounder refers to being from the Puget Sound region. Also, it's the name of a commuter rail service.

Yo when is VRE gonna give us back the trains we leased to you guys years ago?
The least you could do is repaint em!
Come on FC you know Hunh? was just playin'.
Anyone else ever notice the paint scheme on some of them VRE trains? The engines on them johns out in Seatown have big ol' Seahawk heads on the front of them.
They're pretty tight...
Seriously.

Sobering thought of the day . . .
If we go to the finals of the USOC, the 3 extra games will make for 22 games in 12 weeks, with 3 of those being international away matches (Costa Rica, Mexico, and Honduras likely) of the Champion's League.

Thoughts from the Palace/RBNY match. Ives is being a bit harsh on the Palace supporters. They are a new group and struggled to keep anything going tonight. The home fans made noise, so that's good, considering they weren't in their usual stadium. RBNY fans traveled pretty well (50 or so masochists).
Brookes had a goal tonight, but the player that should interest United more than any other on that team is Matthew Mbuta. Brookes appeared to be more of a target forward to me. He was constantly posted up against Goldthwaite and Parke, holding the ball up and laying it off for the speedy/tricky Mbuta. Brookes blew a clear chance in the first half and frequently made bizarre decisions on breakaways. The keeper (Rowland I think) did very well marshaling his defenders and snuffing out some long range shots in the second half.
If Palace were better finishers the game could have been 4 or 5 nil. They had a goal ruled out for offside, struck a post after beating Thornton, and missed two absolute sitters.
The first goal was off a corner, with a defender outjumping the EBNY defense to direct header just under Thornton's bar. I was walking back to my seats (son needed a potty break ... :) ) and saw the second goal from behind the opposite goal, but Thornton appeared to have no chance on a wicked volley across the face of his goal.
The two sendings off were against Ibrahim Kante for a "full blooded" challenge in the first half that I thought was clean but noisy, and Mike Magee earned a red for mouthing off to the ref.
All in all, an impressive performance from Palace, who played within themselves and stayed composed against horribly disorganized RBNY squad.
I thought it was telling that Juan Carlos Osorio sauntered through the gates just in front of me, a few minutes *AFTER* the kickoff.

the Sounders-Chivas game was the first time I've seen Le Toux in action and I must say I'm impressed with the guy... when I heard he was MLS seattle's first signing I thought it was nice, but he'd end up being a bench player. After actually seeing him play, I feel like Seattle's offense will at least be better than San Jose's no matter who they pick up in the expansion draft.

Burch didn't bend 'em. These were grass-cutters, struck hard and fast. I believe that the second one might have caught the goalie unprepared.

@Dadryan, re:

Went and saw the NY Red Bulls vs Crystal Palace game at Broadneck HS last night in front 1,600+ fans - exciting game. Palace won 2-0 and the atmosphere was very festive. NY fans that made the road trip - major props. They represented well with good spirit (ie smoke bombs, singing,chanting, etc..). Palace had some great speed up front and exploited NY's back four. Great game.

@Ron
I know I get a little weird trying to type with the beer goggles on, I was watching the live stream of CUSA vs Sounders live from Tukwila...
Tukwila was one of the first little towns in the Seattle area that put in a cement skateboard park. Hence the OG reference, I believe the old folks these days may use the term Old school.
Lots of Meth addled locals and prostitutes of the crack smoking type.
@ DE read above and try not to sound like such a stuck up smart guy by pointing out my lack of edjumakashun.
@ BUM I thought the clock struck twelve and you turned back into Mastodon Juan. If you in fact missed the short bus that took all you losers home after the Homeless tournament, I repeat grab your crap, stick out the thumb and start walking dude!
I hope we can get a live feed of the United/Chicago game.
The streams that were available on USLLive site were awesome!
