Midday Briefing
*The McBride-Barrett deal has been finalized. No McBride in Chicago until after the Olympics. Of course, he will be needed to fill Blanco's slot in the lineup after the USSF and MLS announce their 20-year suspensions. (kidding) Speaking of Blanco, the USSF might unveil its findings from the Open Cup mess today/tonight, but could end up delaying it until tomorrow.
*Dallas is interested in a pair of River Plate youngsters: Lucas Gomez, a 21-year-old forward, and 19-year-old Lucas Malacarne, a left-sided defender.
*Eerily quiet on the DCU front: No trialists, no signings. Any day now. Really.
*[UPDATE] DCU forward Francis Doe missed practice today to have an infection on his foot examined. He will probably miss Saturday's game against Kansas City.

New players are working out at the new stadium. You've overslept and missed the scoop, Goffinho...

Karma? Fenty alienates DC soccer fans, one of whom is an avid cyclist. Fenty injures himself on a bike. Was Dadryan lurking in the grassy knoll?

Why can't United get some trialist from Boca ... after all the team was here not too long ago.
Could it be that Gallardo would have an issue w/ that?

What happens if McBride gets hurt for the Olympics and is out for the season? Tough sh!t for Chicago? Or can the deal be nullified?

Maybe DC is skipping all that trialist nonsense and getting a proven player. Seriously, what's the percentage of these trialists that pan out? It's like picking players outside the first round of the MLS superdraft. I would wager that most of them wash out of the league without making an impact (Bobby Boswell being one of the exceptions).

AHHH! If we dont have a trialist or trade by tommorrow, I too (like Blanco), might headbutt a DC United staff member!

He's not going to play here. He wants to play in Seattle. He doesn't like the humidity. He doesn't like politicians. He doesn't like rats (RFK).
There are so many reasons - he's just not that into us.

Interesting about Lucas Gomez - I thought he had already transferred to Almagro. Gomez is on the reserves and Malacarne is from the youth system.

I suppose that DC United will be announcing their new signings, along with their new stadium deal in the next 60 to 90 days...
Zzzzz....
yawn.

Why couldnt DCU land Arturo Alvarez!! San Jose got him from FCD pretty cheap - just some draft picks and cash...

Steve:
What is your opinion? Is it quiet at RFK because of something pending or quiet because the club have struck out in their attempts? Further; was Soehn surly and terse yesterday because he was told to make due with what he has and he knows that what he has is not good enough?
Many thanks for all your work and dedication.

I'm pretty sure Malacarne is also available at some of RFK's concession stands.

Was Barrett getting through customs holding up this deal? Is he NAFTA-compliant?
Who jumps to the top of the allocation pile now? San Jose? Is it by record or by how MLS just makes up the rules as they go? Like... somehow the Galaxy get the next allocation because Uncle Phil says so.

It just seems to me that if you look at everything from player selection to motivating the team to play well consistently to managing each game well that Tom Soehn doesn't compare with Steve Nichol or Dominic Kinnear. This has become all the more clear with Superliga.
For DC United to win more trophies, we need a coach in the class of Nicol and Kinnear.

Early reports indicate that Dadryan smashed into a K Street Lobbyist while dodging a mahogony-wielding eco-terror-intern. The resulting backup of SUVs and limousine liberals strectched all the way down K, onto the Whitehurst, through an earlier thread and into yesterday, knocking the mayor off his bike.

10 players and a goalkeeper.

Fenty was riding on Whitehurst Freeway? Yeah, and pigs might fly out of my butt...
Couriers are the only people I know who use that short cut, my guess is that he was "training" near the Whitehurst. Maybe working on his barrier bunny hops for Cross season...
It does make for an excellent conspiracy theory but I have an airtight alibi: I spent the afternoon reading and ranting on Soccer Insider, playing Tiger Woods PGA tour 2007 and reading books to my one year old... She can surely vouch for her Big Daddy!~)

"No trialists, no signings." Whatever happened to the boasting about having thousands of players catalogued and scouted on DVD's and having fantastic connections with agents teeming with interested and talented players--all just waiting to be plucked from the lower leagues of South America and added to Tom Soehn's stable?
I miss Alecko, Facundo, Boswell, B. Carroll, and John Wilson. Wilson, more just 'cause.
Oh yeah, and Gomez.

Hard to have trialists when your coach is not around to evaluate their skill sets and abilities. Sounds like Soehn is about to be shown the door. Seriously once the game vs KC is done I would not be surprised to wake up and see that Soehn was fired and a replacement to be named on monday. Goff if you spot anyone with the DCU brass Sat night let us know. It's got to be coming a new coach....

Of course Boswell was an undrafted free agent. Another indication of just how valuable a tool the "Super" Draft is to MLS teams.

Why bring in players, when your coach is outgoing. Kasper might be in trouble as well, if the new coach demands control of player aquisitions.
Allow me to introduce; Tom this is the door, door kick him in the a$$ on the way out. Oh yeah, please no Arena. Just because he is vast improvement doesn't mean we shouldn't aspire for more. One name,Thomas Dooley

Yeah, Francis Doe has really been a good asset, and has had the worst time getting on the field due to circumstances beyond his control. Best of luck to him, we need healthy legs!!
Posted by: Spence | July 31, 2008 7:46 AM | Report abuse
Typical Payne and Kaspar. We'll bring in another over rated South American player who will do nothing and then go away at the end of the season. And then Soehn will be blamed.
