Oly, All-Stars, Santino and Clint

The latest buzz on the Olympic roster, which will be unveiled at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, is that Robbie Rogers is in and that Charlie Davies may end up as an alternate. Despite Rogers's excellent form in MLS, there had been some question to his status with USA Coach Peter Nowak after not making the Olympic qualifying roster.

With Rogers, Sacha Kljestan and Michael Parkhurst (overage) expected to head to China and unavailable for all-star festivities, sources tell me that Steve Nicol will add Steve Ralston, Jonathan Bornstein and a Dallas player (Juan Toja or Duilio Davino?) to the all-star roster. [UPDATE: I'm told it's Toja.] Which means, for the first time in MLS's 13 seasons, no D.C. United selections. The official announcement will be made shortly after the Olympic choices are announced tomorrow.

DCU's Santino Quaranta aggravated his hamstring injury last night and is listed as questionable for Saturday's SuperLiga match against Houston.

Clint Mathis has resurfaced in an RSL uniform, sort of. Click here for details.

Waiting to see if anyone claims former Red Bulls and Earthquakes midfielder Joe Vide, who is available on waivers. DCU had expressed interest. Stay tuned.....

[UPDATE] United has claimed Vide on waivers. He will be available Tuesday in the regular season match against Houston.

Davino???? Niell would be a better selection.

I assume it's Toja, but all I heard was that it is one of Dallas's foreign players

What's the reasoning on leaving CD off? Scoring too many goals? Perhaps he's better off staying in Sweden, but we need a third genuine forward.

Joe Vide is a good pickup. He always struck me as a servicable midfielder for the Red Bulls. He is an upgrade over Dyachenko and can spell Clyde Simms when necessary.

Well, I guess the only other move we are going to make this year will be for a goalie then...

I would go with Rocha, he has been head and shoulders better than Toja this season, who has been a disappointment. What has Bornstein done to get in?

This is the first I'd heard that Mathis was not still in Greece. Did that gig simply not work out?

Isn't there some provision in the MLS CBA to the effect that All-Star bonuses are awarded to a larger group of players than those that actually suit up for the game? If so, would any United players benefit?

Posted by: tri-village | July 16, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

They should have added a RSL player, especially given their history of being so bad. I guess we might get some next year when the match gets played in Utah.

On that note, maybe Real Madrid will be the All-Star opponent next year..........

Competition for Simms... Good.

No All-Stars... Good.

Quaranta's hamstring... *sigh*

As an aside, can we rest Fred from the SuperLiga Houston match?

Posted by: B.A. | July 16, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

other than whatever all-star bonus a DCU player might be missing out on I can't say I am very upset by this. The team needs rest. As far as I am concerned the MLS all-star game is a colossal waste of time and energy.

Soy United - check out the Bolt Bus. it's a new competitor to the chinatown buses, union drivers and safer. there are a couple chinatown bus lines, but you're looking at $20 one way/$35 roundtrip either way.

Joe Vide will definetly strengthen the midfield. San Jose is stupid to have an obsession with playing Ramirio Corrales at D mid. (Also stupid that Ramirio Corrales has international caps)

As a FCD supporter I will even easily admit that anyone making the all-stars from the FCD roster is an absolute joke - except for Cooper of course. Toja has regressed 200% and Rocha is a typical pansy South American.

Posted by: FCD Brad | July 16, 2008 7:20 PM | Report abuse

So let me see. Doe who couldn't even be at the Red Bulls line up got picked up by DC. And now this dude who was not able to get on San Jose is good enough for DC. No wonder why we are stinking.

quakes fan here. i don't know what to say about vide. but the dude sucked! played a few games w/ the quakes and he looked horrible. weird 'cause i thought he looked alright w/ the bulls . so good luck , but don't expect much.

Kirk > Vide

Posted by: GoUnited | July 16, 2008 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Quite a start to the NE game. Sloppy play by Pachuca's right back, and he slams his head into Mansally. Both are bloody, and the Pachuca player already had a bandage wrapped around his head.

On the ensuing free kick near the line 35 out, NE executes a perfect fake-offsides. The two that are offsides aren't in the play, then to run in cleanly, easily scoring...yet are called offsides. Completely blown call, as the two offsides were not in the play.

So 3 of the top 4 teams overall combine for 1 ASG selection. Segares, Busch, and Emilio are snubbed big-time.

Coincidentally, I had a "where are they now" moment yesterday and looked at the Ergotelis' wikipedia page to find that Mathis was not on the 2008-2009 roster but was in the "Notable Former Players" section.

Not sure what it means that he played for the RSL reserves since anyone off the street is allowed to dress for a reserve match.

BOOOOOOOO!Soehn is it not your job to get players ready to perform. Please no more stale south Americans. I am at the Gothia Cup in Sweden, a small tournament of 35,000 players representing 70 countries. Today alone I saw five players that would start over 90% of United. Ex. ssali the number 17 for kampala Kids out of Uganda. A truely gifted and special player. According to my buddy who played at PSV for ten years, he is one the best young players he has ever seen. Some of the teams in attendance: Chivas, Club America, Cruz Azul, Piquininos Do Jockey, Cruzeiro,Hamburg, Hutchinson Vale, Colchester United, Hammarby, Bronby, Herrenveen. Former players Alan Shearer, Xavi Alonzo, Ze Roberto, Adebayor, Pirlo, Julio Baptista, Kieron Dyer. I know those types of players aren't what we are looking for. How about we cancel the next few trips to south America and actually improve with our transfers to point that we actually win games and titles. Off the soap box now. Tournament runs through saturday your missing the boat if you dont try to at least get over DC United coaching staff.

Posted by: Glenn | July 16, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Handball was clear, though it may not call at some occassions. Good thing is MLS team beat Mexican club. Bad thing is Revolution stays higher by Pachuca in a game that counts. Although DC beat Pachuca it was not matter.

All-star game is a sham. West Ham? Seriously?

Schelotto not on the team? Emilio not on the team? What is the league smoking?

Posted by: bristol | July 16, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

I think the injured player was Phelan. His leg was in a boot as well.

The "handball" was really not clear. The guy had his arms in front of his body and the ball was blasted into him from a very short distance. Not deliberate as far as I am concerned and a case of ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

Now Wambach carted off on a gurney with a leg injury. Possible tib-fib fracture. A freak play really. She was going full speed to shoot and was blocked at just the wrong moment.

Posted by: Glenn | July 16, 2008 10:49 PM | Report abuse

That was about the only play Brazil didn't foul Abby...

I'm not sure what else to say about that.

Somebody is going to have to step up for the US. Dave Johnson is in the booth for the game in San Diego. WPS to announce some sort of partnership with FSC soon.

Bornstein and Kljestan are trying real hard to take over the game. Dan Kennedy (the other backup behind Guzan) is standing on his head in net.

Santos Laguna had a game-tying goal waved off towards the end on a questionable offsides call; otherwise, the Carson Goats really played an outstanding game and deserved the win.

Posted by: 63011 | July 16"

Aimar will play in the center, so it isn't really a problem for Adu, just like Rui Costa wasn't the problem last year. Christian Rodriguez already left, so we are talking about DiMaria, Coentrao, and Adu as the "young left-footed tricky wingers." Lots of loan rumors about both Coentrao and Adu, but there should be plenty of playing time for whoever stays. A loan, of course, would be about getting even more playing time....

I don't know much about Vide, but DC is in desperate need of able bodies. Quaranta shouldn't have been playing Tuesday night, but Soehn was desperate to inject some offense. It worked, but...

As for Freddy, this will probably work to his advantage -- as it makes a move out of Benfica more likely. According to FSC, Monaco and Genoa are interested.

Folks, look at it this way:

We have no respectable backup for Simms. Stratford is there in name, but has looked distinctly below MLS quality every time he's been on the field. McTavish is the only other option, and he's already needed to play in the back. Vide is a reasonable backup to Simms. I think getting a backup that won't be terrible for arguably our hardest working player is a good idea.

What do people expect? For an MLS team to have a bench full of guys that can start for every other MLS team? That doesn't happen in MLS, and it never has. Your backup players are usually somewhere between "decent starter" to "crap". It has always been this way. Stop acting surprised.

All Star team: Like everyone else, I think it's a joke. Emilio is the only United player on the CBA-forced inactive all-star list. I'm glad none of our players have to go endure an extra game on turf, but the lack of recognition/financial bonus is bizarre. And really...Toja? He's been a shadow of a shadow of himself. Cooper is the only Dallas player that should even be allowed to watch the All Star game, much less appear in it.
