Afternoon Kickaround

*The U.S. Open Cup championship game is scheduled to be played Aug. 26, but for various reasons, the match will probably be moved to September. If D.C. United defeats New England in next Tuesday's semifinal at RFK Stadium, the final is likely to be Sept. 3 at a site to be determined. If the Revs win, expect the championship to be settled later that month. Seattle and Charleston will face each other in the other semifinal. I would guess that, with a victory, DCU will host the final regardless of the opponent. But if the Revs win, perhaps the USL entry will stage the game?

*Promoters of the Guatemala-Bolivia match this Wednesday night say that Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz will be at RFK for the friendly. We're still awaiting the official Guatemala roster. Defender Gustavo Cabrera was in Washington for the DCU-K.C. match Saturday, but just for the day. He was on his way to Denmark to join his new club, Aarhus. Bolivia's 20-man list for the friendly has just one player from outside its domestic league: DCU's Jaime Moreno. Others include former MLSer Joselito Vaca (Blooming) and scoring ace Joaquin Botero (Bolivar). Bolivia will be missing several regulars because of club commitments, including Marcelo Martins (who plays in Ukraine) and Juan Carlos Arce (South Korea).

*Crystal Palace Baltimore improved to 11-6-1 with a 3-0 USL2 victory over Bermuda. CP will play its regular season home finale Wednesday night at UMBC Stadium against the same club before entering the playoffs. ... Top-seeded Pali Blues (California) scored twice in the final seven minutes to defeat Indiana, 2-1, for the W-League championship. ... Both D.C. United and Real Maryland advanced to the Super-20 League semifinals in Virginia Beach before losing to the Chicago Fire and Toronto Lynx, respectively. Chicago won the title.

Excuse, me... Bermuda?!

Does CP Baltimore need an equipment manager for away games?

Goff,

Let's assume that Seattle Sounders advance to the Open Cup finals.

Since the current Sounders organization will no longer exist once Seattle Sounders FC is formed, do they forfeit their eligibility for the Champions League next season?

If so, does this mean that (again assuming the Sounders advance to the Open Cup final) either New England or United will qualify for the tournament, whether they win or lose in the final match?

Posted by: TCompton | August 4, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

I'm sure they'd give that CCL berth to the MLS Sounders.

The B in BSPN now stands for Brett...

Posted by: RK | August 4, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

I don't really have a problem with the Sounders qualifying, but the USL1D club isn't exactly joining MLS. It's a whole new organization.

Perhaps they'll say that Adrian Hanauer, the current owner of the Seattle Sounders, is selling a portion of his ownership to Joe Roth, Paul Allen, and Drew Carey.

It's just an interesting situation.

Does that mean there will be two teams in Seatle? Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) and Seattle Sounders? (USL1)

No, the USL1 Sounders will cease operations at the end of their current season.

Seattle Sounders FC have already signed one of the USL1 Sounders players to their squad, Sebastien Le Toux. Presumbably current Sounders coach will be hired in some capasity as the Sounders FC coach too.

Nice to see the youth league guys doing well. Have any MLS clubs moved a youth player to the senior roster since the inception of the youth development program? Was that just last season?

The MLS Players Union just announced that the two finalists will use a chainsaw to saw the U.S. Open Cup trophy in half after the game, no matter who wins, so each team can have an equal piece.

The parents at JEB Stuart High School are pitting football v. soccer in trying to steal an artificial field to be build at nearby Bailey's Elementary that will be primarily used for soccer.

Here is what one of them wrote on their web-site: "WOW. An $800K all-weather turf field at Bailey's Elementary School for illegals, thieves, robbers, rapists, winos, MS 13 members, etc., who inhabit that neighborhood and would be the primary users of your largess. That's real logical, Penny--not to mention being a HUGH slap in the face for J.E.B. Stuart HS. And not installing the field at J.E.B. Stuart High School where the school community DESERVES it !!!!!!!!!!!!!"

When I left the following reply it was quickly deleted: "The Little River Soccer Club began working on getting at turf field back in 2005. Are these the "illegals, thieves, robbers, rapists, winos, MS 13 members, etc." that you are referring too? If so they worked the system better than you did. The first link below contains the beginning of the campaign to get the turf field at Bailey's back in 2005. The second link contains the list of fields selected by Fairfax County to get turf fields back in 2006. The first link Google returns for JEB Stuart and a turf field is in 2008.

Please go to the following web-site and let these parents know that soccer players will have a voice in where the Fairfax County Park money is spent:

The Real Maryland Super 20s did an excellent job at the National Tournament. They weren't even meant to qualify for it (having missed automatic qualification in their regular season) and only played due to some team on the West Coast pulling out. Hopefully some of the players get noticed by the professional squad or from other teams!

Buried in the write-up of the Reserve match from yesterday is the fact that Dyachenko only entered in the 70th minute. We had 3 guest players starting, yet Dyachenko only got 20 minutes. Unless there's some injury that we don't know about, then he's definitely in the coach's doghouse, and could be on his way out of DC VERY SOON.

I was at the game and many folks there were wondering the same thing. Yet, in his limited time Rod was probably the best player on the field.

Definitely a lot better than Ben Olsen's brother. Maybe even better than Jaime's cousin from days of yore!

It would be nice if the MLS Sounders got the berth into the CCL if they won the Open Cup.
Shoot, I'd really love the ace in the sleeve a DCU/Sounders final would be to jump start some of my "sleepy" Seatown friends into paying a little attention to what will be(in my mind at least) a great rivalry.
You know the rivalry of the "warshiingtons"!
That being said I hope United stomps on the Revs, and whoever we face in the final...
Still pissed I'll be out of town on the 12th and even more pissed that someone hasn't manned up and offered a live feed or something for the match up.
Seriously is radio from New England good enough for everyone?
OH well.
