Gibbs Returns (Cory, Not Joe)

In his Friday blog, The Commish Don Garber essentially confirmed what the Insider reported exclusively last week -- that 28-year-old defender Cory Gibbs, a onetime U.S. World Cup candidate whose career has been interrupted by injuries, is on his way to MLS. Gibbs (St. Pauli, Dallas, Feyenoord, Den Haag, Charlton) will be available through a special allocation, probably early this coming week. Los Angeles is at the top of the allocation list, followed by Colorado and New England.

The Galaxy, which is in desperate need of defensive reinforcement, has three options: Claim Gibbs and add him and his undisclosed salary to the senior roster; claim Gibbs and trade him; pass altogether and retain the first allocation position for future use. Gibbs has been training in the L.A. area in recent weeks.

The obvious decision is to acquire Gibbs, but if another club wants him badly enough, perhaps it would make sense to trade him. We should learn his destination in the next few days.

What would you do?

What would you do if your son was at home
Crying all alone on the bedroom floor cuz he's hungry
And the only way to feed him is ta
Sleep wit' a man for a little bit of money
And his daddy's gone
Somewhere smoking rock now
In and out of lock down
I ain't gotta job now
So for you this is just a good time
But for me this is what I call life

What about Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb(s)?

Gibbs will go to the Galaxy - he is training in LA and the Gals biggest need is a centerback. Between its allocation $ and over-paid benchwarmers (i.e. Vagenas)who may be on a Carvallo-like contract that allows them to be cut, the Gals could be able to afford him without having to trade Ruiz.

I'd eat a turkey sandwich and be on my way. Gibbs is of no use...j/k. See, reverse psychology there.

Or is it?

Who ever takes him should trade for Corey Ashe so they can hae the 2 Corey's.

If I were Alexi Lalas, I would trade Joe Gibbs to DC United for Rod Dyacenko. Because the Galaxy could use some more offense.

Anybody watching TFC-Colorado?

Rohan Ricketts just said he thought the toughest keeper in MLS was "the DC keeper."

He did preface it by saying he didn't really know them all, but still...

Hilarious.

Pablo Mastroeni sees DC in the MLS Cup though...

the bigger question is who cares?

if he stays healthy, then maybe I wouldn't say that, however....

LA's defense will still suck with him, so it matters not.

Can they clear cap room at this point in the season? I've read nearly all their contract $ are guaranteed at this point. Or does that issue affect LA when the league is desperate for them to succeed?

I was waiting for an all out bench-clearing brawl in that TFC-Colorado match.

Vagenas is teacher's pet. Teacher being Lalas/AEG. He ain't goin' nowhere.

Gibbs is instantly the best defender in LA, but isn't the rumor that he wants to play for Chivas USA and not for the Galaxy? I know I read that somewhere that was at least somewhat reliable.

If Gibbs doesn't want to play for LA, they need to get an established defensive player. It could be a center back, it could be a defensive midfielder that doesn't give the ball away whenever possible, but it most certainly must be someone that can contribute now. Knowing Lalas, this means he'll pick up a couple draft picks and a forward.

Lalas would probably go for the one who happens to be deceased.

Anon;

So, looks like allocation money is what's being used for Gibbs.

Fire Lalas and Leiweke.

Two Birds with One Stone!

Now the Galaxy can move Franklin to Right Fullback and Klien to the midfield where he is best. Becks can move to central midfield to facillitate the attack.
