Matchnight: United-Fire

[updated with lineup]

Greetings from Toyota Park and the debut of new DCU goalkeeper Louis Crayton. Yes, Crayton is in, Wells is out.

Today's opponent-appropriate tunes are courtesy of Graham Parker.

Unlike our last visit, there are no tornado sirens wailing. In fact, nothing but a few puffy clouds and blue skies. As usual, an immaculate playing surface.

Read my match preview.

Read about the Fire supporters/security issues.

No standard TV coverage in the Washington area. You can watch on Direct Kick or listen to the radio broadcast at 1050 AM or online at Federal News Radio.

Back later with DCU's lineup.....

DCU LINEUP: *CRAYTON*; Namoff, McTavish, Burch, Martinez; Fred, Simms, Quaranta, Guerrero; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Wells, Zaher, Kirk, Vide, P. Carroll, Thompson, Cordeiro.

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

That Blanco sure is a class act.

Assuming we stick with the same midfield and forwards, Soehn had 2 choices to make: Crayton or Wells, and Peralta's replacement (I'm pulling for Martinez moving into the middle and Burch playing left back, but that seems to no longer be an option for reasons beyond my comprehension).

why is a redskin game more important than a dc game.

dc needs another tv outlet]opiptg

Saturday nite is dead; don't get excited. And, for goodness' sake, don't bother with the local girls.

Looks like it will be a 3 martini game

Posted by: John | August 16, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Crayton must look at least decent in practice. He's going to get a lot of work tonight unless Burch has suddenly learned to be a center back.

Disgrace. Stupid helmate game season hasn't even started and we can't watch a meaningful league game on local tv without subscribing another channel. What a frustrating! Ok I will just watch fsc or goltv or mexican league game. Wells got to be upset!

Posted by: td | August 16, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Wht didn't Comcast put this on their other channel (4 in Mont CO.)? I have Direct Kick, but still.

We all know the Deadskins rule DC and their fans need all the preseason they can get before another 7-9 season. But Comcast can make an effort.

Anyone know if DCU gets any compensation, like another game? Or id the contract so weak that they have to put up with this?

Posted by: Nogra Rover | August 16, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Burch in the middle is a disaster. This might be ugly.

Posted by: Glenn | August 16, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Ok the redskins game is on BOTH channel nine and Comcast! They need two channels to show a preseason game? Come on...

If I weren't going out tonight, I'd buy DK -- it's only 10 bucks now.

Cunningham #100. Great service from Serioux.

Posted by: RK | August 16, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else's MLS Live just showing a generic Direct Kick screen listing tonight's games, accompanied by wuss rock?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

CSN does not have an agreement for use of channel 4 during baseball season, MASN does. And the Redskins have a deal with Comcast and yes it supercedes United's. It's a shame, but welcome to DC. And Comcast wasn't going out of it's way to cover a road match for tape delay. The shame is that CSN claimed the match in the first place, keeping FSC and Telefutura away.

As for the line-up, we're in trouble. I see a 3-1 loss coming :-(

Glad to see Crayton starting. That should help.
Does McHead start or just see action late?

I'm serious. This music makes me wish I was dead.

It just hit me that the game starts at 8:30 and not 8. I guess I deserve to listen to a whitebread version of O.A.R. as punishment for such foolishness.

Instead of whining, I figure I'll help.

Chicago lineup:

-------------- Rolfe - Herron
------------ Jerkface Blanco
Mapp --------------------------------- Pappa
-------------------- Pause
Segares - Conde - Soumare - Prideaux
-------------------- Busch

Bench: Noble, Brown, Gutierrez, Banner, Nyarko, Frankowski, McBride

mlslive.tv, I believe......does require you to buy a season pass. That is only 9.95 now, so pretty good deal.

Posted by: marksman | August 16, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Is DK really only $10, or is that for the streaming feed from mlsnet?

Posted by: CY | August 16, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

$9.95 is for the streaming feed from mlsnet

I just paid it, we'll see, but I figure that's a good deal if the feed is good enough

Posted by: delantero | August 16, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Feed's working fine. You'll have to deal with questionable announcing from the "Foire" (their pronunciation, not mine) broadcast team. I've already caught a "Luchiano Emilio" in there, and the telecast began about 60 seconds ago.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 8:32 PM | Report abuse

OMG! Adrian Serioux is funny! If you were watching Fox Soccer Channel during the 6 in 60 segment, they told him to finish the sentence, "I hate to admit it, but I really like to...". He said, "Eat ice cream!"

Mls.livetv is ten bucks well spent!
Just got back from the obx and will hopefully see a more pleasing result than the last league game our boys played.
Seriously Mlslivetv is worth the money, think how much money you'll save not going to the bar.
ONe day ticket is only 4.95, and the rest of the season including playoffs is 9.95.
Vamos United!
I'm throwing on the pink flower tiara, I hope it works as well as it did last time!

For those who haven't used it before, the mlslive.tv feed is much easier to use in windows media player. Once you open the feed, right click the video and go to options. Copy the link mms://..... and then hit stop on the video. Go to windows media player to "Open URL" and paste the link then hit play.

This has to be done rather quickly as it creates a unique link each time you open a video and that link only stays active for a short period of time.

This will allow you to resize and reshape the frame however you want.

Thanks for the link to the Chicago story about the Latino supporter group's troubles, Goff. I just don't get why there'd be security people being heavy handed with supporters in Denver and Chicago. Doesn't ownership in those cities realize how importance the hardcore fan base is to creating an atmosphere and attracting more casual fans?

Posted by: ahelms | August 16, 2008 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Namoff booked for falling down and accidentally taking Blanco with him. Gotta love that MLS officiating (though, I will admit Namoff was looking to foul before he fell). Blanco asks for the card, and gets it. Didn't FIFA say that players gesturing/asking for cards would themselves be booked?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

when will Emilio get the respect and protection that some other DPs in the league get. You cant touch Blanco without getting a card and now he can call for them on his own.

Posted by: dc in asheville | August 16, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Guerrero is awesome. Everyone who complains about the front office needs to recognize.

Fred is having another weak match.

Tim Weyland is a terrible referee.

Posted by: Glenn | August 16, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

The Chicago announcers whom we're hearing on MLS Direct Kick are very astute. Good observations about Emilio's size and how the Fire defenders' greater size means that it's better to give service to his feet.

Also good observations about Blanco and Mapp using their body and redirects with the ball to shield the ball and help draw fouls that led to yellow cards.

Posted by: delatnero | August 16, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Namoff now called for another foul, this time after Mapp kicked him and (typically) fell down. Crayton claims the freekick confidently.

Now Simms fouls Blanco and gets a stern talking-to. While I like Simms adding some steel to his game, he better tone it down or Weyland will send him off.

Great defending by McTavish to keep Herron from getting to that ball, and nice stuff from Crayton to pick the ball off before the kind of disaster we've become accustomed to.

Jaime gets clocked and no call then McTavish fouls Herron who goes airborne and gets a caution. Ridiculous.

Not a bad left footed shot from Namoff. Powerful, just at the keeper.

Posted by: d | August 16, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

And now McTavish picks up a silly yellow card for going in too hard on Herron at midfield. Might have been retaliation for their earlier collision which had Herron called for the foul, but it's inexcusable in a game that's being called this tightly. We look like we're intent on ending this game with 10 men.

Herron, as per usual, holds his knee and rolls around like mad.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Our guys need to play smarter with the fouling, but I'm glad we're handing it out to the Fire for once. I for one got sick and tired of Mo & Go getting pounded every time we played them for years, and it seemed like Benny was the only player who wouldn't stand for it.

He's making good calls, but the card situation is ridiculously one sided (3-0). Namoff didn't deserve a yellow, he clearly just fell.

Nice stop by Crayton just now. He's done nothing wrong thus far.

Chicago's starting to come into the game. I'd like to see us slow the game down, play simple, and keep possession to keep the 1-0 lead into halftime.

I agree weyland is not calling anything on chicago but I think you're underestimating chicago's players' capacity for idiocy. Blanco, Herron, Conde, Soumare, and Prideaux are prime candidates.

From the Chicago fan article:

Blanco, who was signed in part to help grow the league's Hispanic fan base, defended Gaytan's firm Thursday and suggested the supporters should shoulder the blame.

"I feel that it's possible that the fans at the time were inebriated," he said. "When people are drunk, things can get out of hand and things can get crazy."

Other than the goal and the number of cards, not much has happened in this game. Chicago has had 2 half-chances (Burch shielding off Herron, Crayton save on Rolfe), but not much else. They are having a bit more of the run of play, but not by much. Fred scored on our first genuine chance.

So far, our defending has been good enough. You have to worry about the bookings (justified or not), though. I see Weyland giving us a minimum of 2 more cards. We have no real star performances, but no one's having a bad night either. 6s and 5s all over. Emilio is struggling a bit since he's basically alone against both Conde and Soumare, who are giving him nothing and are cleanly bumping him when he goes for his first touch. They seem intent on not allowing him to face goal.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Crayton has everything to prove in the game. I like is assertiveness. Hopefully he is a better organizer on set pieces and directing the defense.

did the Fire amble into a bar in Chicago, find the first two guys they saw and say: "do you want to be soccer announcers?" These guys are disasters. They make Marcelo Balboa sound like a sophisticated commentator.

Mr. Crayton needs to come off his line a little quicker. If he continues to make these slow decisions it could be a problem.

So when do we make a sub, and who needs to come out?

Posted by: Forrest | August 16, 2008 9:58 PM
---------

actually, it's more like "who comes in?" In the 80th minute or so we should sub out Quaranta for a defender. If it remains 1-0, no one is coming out.

As for Chicago - they should sub out Andy Herron because he is not very good.

d:

No doubt. I'd like to see us tighten up, but I'm not expecting it.

Mapp had a great chance to shoot with his right foot a minute ago, but he once again shows that he may be MLS's most one-footed player. Him or Burch, anyway.

Conde booked. Blanco off the bar, would have been a GOTW candidate. Now Tino is booked. We need to slow this thing down.

re: the announcers. Not only are they horrible but they are the worst sort of homers. Whenever United get fouled, its a little touch but when a the Fire do, it clearly should be a yellow.

I'm not sure Crayton is cap-tied in terms of football, and he surely isn't with respect to other sports. Thus, given his dual citizenship, the Swiss may also want to give him a look.

Posted by: Bill in Md. | August 16, 2008 10:07 PM | Report abuse

Vide's up. Fire announcers, like many others, mistakenly believe that demotion to the developmental roster means you are no longer with the club. I'm not sure when people lost their handle on that one.

You know, if we don't salt this one away, Fred hitting the post and Moreno missing the ball just now are going to make it that much harder to swallow. We haven't been great tonight, but this game should be over.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 16, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Emilio is a crusader. He's been taking some big hits and not taking the dive. Any touch on Blanco and he's like a feather, tossed gently into the air. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this is just a perfect example of class and toughness versus scum and villainy.

Posted by: Andy | August 16, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Guerrero's a good pickup for DCU.

I didn't hear the announcers questioning Goff's reporting about Vide's being demoted to developmental status. It's just puzzling that he'd receive this sort of news when the team is giving him a lot of minutes. I think that's what they said.

Okay, I admit those announcers are homers. Frankowski and McTavish were holding each other, it seems, and when Frankowski falls down, they assume it should be a penalty.

I hate the Fire more than NYRB cuz of what they've done to us in recent years.

I'd say send Gallardo back on the next plane to Buenos Aires, but I guess we need him to beat the Revs and the Dynamo, who are both the class of the league.

I wonder if Soehn's player selection or subs will be influenced by all the players who are carrying yellows.

Posted by: Bill in Md. | August 16, 2008 10:34 PM | Report abuse

second shut out of the year! Crayton looks good on crosses but still needs to come off his line quicker.

the Fire play much better against DC United in RFK than they do in Chicago.

between the ref and the announcers, I don't know which was more disastrous. I will say this: I'll trade seven yellow cards for not calling a penalty with ten seconds to go.
