Matchnight: United-Revs
Greetings from RFK.
What, no rain/lightning/typhoon? Clearly, the soccer weather gods do not recognize U.S. Open Cup on their schedule of RFK disruptions.
Marcelo Gallardo, who will not play tonight, is doing pregame training exercises with some of the reserves. He appears to be moving pretty well. Perhaps we will see him in uniform Saturday at Chicago.
Revs scratches include Reis, Parkhurst, Ralston, Heaps, Dube and Mansally. Former DCUer Doug Warren will be in goal.
I will be back later with United's lineup.
DCU LINEUP: Wells; Namoff, McTavish, Peralta, Martinez; Quaranta, Simms, Fred, Guerrero; Moreno, Emilio.
One hour before kickoff, there are maybe 50 people in the stands. I'd be surprised if they draw 5,000.
As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion. Since there is no TV coverage, I will post occasional comments below during the match.

I don't know what to make of this but Revs either doesn't care about winning or they think they beat United easily with their mostly reserved squad and brag about how they distroyed DC. United better win in this insidence, otherwise it will be shocker. Any good luck!

Considering the Revs record and the crowded schedule they (and we)face it makes good sense to bring their B team and rest some of their starters. With a possible MLS championship in view, it is obvious they have a different take on tonight's match, something like "An Open Cup win would be nice, but an MLS Championship is nicer." And yes, if they do whip us with their subs, their elation and our degradation will be all the greater.

Steve,
I thought the winner of the US Open Cup gets a position in international tournament. Why is New England taking so many starters out of tonight's match-up?

There is no TV coverage. Therefore, no Justin.tv.

Yeah the winner of USOC goes to next years CONCACAF Champions League (formally CONCACAF Champions Cup)

Why is Parkhurst out? ;)
Posted by: RK | August 12, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse
Tim I'm guessing its since no one goes to Revs games they probably lose money by participating in the Champions League so they don't really want to qualify!

Mr. Goff,
Do you know when the roster will be released for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier on August 20th against Guatemala?
Posted by: Ameobi | August 12, 2008 6:06 PM | Report abuse
Makes sense for the Revs to bring their "B" side. From what I understand, if they were to make the USOC final and a few other "if" situations, they'll average a game every 3 days.
Posted by: JoeW | August 12, 2008 6:08 PM | Report abuse
Parkhurst is playing for the USMNT in the Olympics.

Tim F. - the Supporter's Shield Winner also receives a berth in the Champions's League, as do the two MLS Cup finalists. Calculated risk on New England's part, but you have to figure they're the favorites for the Supporter's Shield right now.

They are passing superbly and have been in New Englands side of the field the whole game.. DC have NE on there heels right now

Luciano - you're beautiful !
Unless MLS changes it's salary structure and makes it easier for teams to have some sort of depth I'm afraid DCU won't capture it's fifth title until they don't qualify for all of the extraneous tournaments and concentrate all of their efforts on MLS. At the same time this scenario envisages the top east rivals Chicago Fire and NE Revolution to be embroiled in those physically and mentally depleting tournaments.
You can simply compare the differences between this year and last year. Last year NE had no other obligations and captured the MLS Open Cup title. This year they played five SuperLiga matches and are fielding a back up game for the US Open Cup.
Based on all of the extra tournaments, I'm guessing that Chicago Fire will win the MLS Cup based on their ability to concentrate on MLS

Sorry for the absence -- internet issues.
Emilio scored on an early header, set up nicely by Namoff on the right side.
It seemed DCU was on the way to an easy victory over the Revs reserves, but the match began to even out, and in the 34th, United's defense failed to stop Joe Germanese, whose cross was deflected back to him by Namoff. Germanese slid a low shot past Wells.
Khano Smith missed fractionally wide of the far post in the 45th.
The crowd? A few thousand, I guess.

What ever happens, don't put Dyachenko into the game!!! And, the reason NE is playing their subs is because they really don't care if they win or not--they'd have to go to Seattle or Charleston to play them and that would mean "cash" for transportation and they are known for being
"Cheep-Cheep"--ask Twellman.

Posted by: Giannicolus Jones | August 12, 2008 9:16 PM | Report abuse
doesn't matter who wins Sea-Char. Trip out west would be on 9/3. DCU is at San Jose on 9/6. So DCU would just go out earlier to play USOC.
If the match is at DC, then, they go out to SJ after the match.
So, doesn't matter from a X-country trip.
Posted by: JSF | August 12, 2008 9:17 PM | Report abuse
So does Rod have enough time to get his usual yellow card?
Posted by: Forrest | August 12, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse
JSF, but you want to play at home. And you'd rather train at home and then make the trip than spend a week out on West Coast

@ JSF I would rather United play the final at home.

I must not have been paying much attention at the time because I was living in Indianapolis in '97. I finished my degree work at Ooey-Pooey.

Yay, we get to play at home!
A pretty good performance to night. But if our first team, more or less, couldn't beat their scrubs that would have been a total disaster.
Good job at the end wasting time and moving the ball around holding possession.
Fred was driving me nuts. Between him and Simms holding the ball forever instead of moving it quickly, especially in the first half it was very maddening.
Great ball from Namoff on the first goal, but nearly gave away a goal with a terrible pass right at the end of the first half.
Tino's first touch almost always kips the ball up in the air...not good.
But 3-1 is 3-1 so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

He also said Guerrero's not having a good game. Is that true, cause he seems pretty active.
-------------------
Not true. He was picking his spots, and he got dinged up several times. But when it mattered he was there. His assist on goal 3 was top notch all the way. On the other side Fred was not good though.

A win is a win, but that was as poorly played a United game as I've seen in awhile . .. well at least since Sunday and our beating by the Red Bulls.
The team has no flow, no ritmo, nada
Bryan Namoff had a fantastic game . . . as did Gonzo Martinez ... if it was only against their starters, I'd be more enthusiastic, but as it stands United needs to get their act together.
Posted by: delantero | August 12, 2008 11:24 PM | Report abuse
I agree with Mysterian. Guerrero wasn't brilliant, but he was far from bad. I'm not sure where Limarzi came up with Guerrero playing poorly.
The Revs created a few decent chances and (like they always do against us) capitalized on a chance for a garbage goal. That said, possession was likely in our favor 60/40 over the course of the match. During the first half, most of that possession was not in the attacking third because the Revs did a very good job of keeping their shape and staying disciplined. We would keep the ball for long stretches, but eventually get impatient and try to force something that was too ambitious to come off. The opening goal for Emilio featured Namoff hitting the best cross by anyone in a United shirt this season. It was absolutely perfect, and found a fine run by Emilio right between Valentino and Flood.
DC opened the 2nd half like a team that was upset at itself and focused on correcting things. Emilio nearly scored straight away, and then Quaranta put us up with the nice dinked shot over Warren. After that, we played keep-away for a good while, letting the Revs run themselves out. Fred blasted a sitter about 20 yards over the bar somehow. Thompson got his 2nd yellow after kicking Moreno just below the knee, and then he and Joseph proceeded to attempt an argument that this somehow wasn't punishable by a card. Typical New England whining, I guess.
The 3rd goal was all class. Moreno played a great ball through 2 defenders to put Guerrero clear down the wing, and Guerrero's cut-back from the left was right to Emilio. Lucigol's first touch gave him the space to avoid the attempted block by the Revs defender (Valentino, I believe).
This was, despite the tense period between the 38th to 45th minutes, a good, respectable performance against a Revs reserve side. We should beat that group by 2 or more goals every time out. I thought McTavish played a lot better than he has been due to him having more trust in Peralta than in Carroll or Burch as his partner. Meanwhile, Quaranta's play as attacking midfielder was very strong without being particularly flashy. I thought he was the best player on the field.
