Matchnight: USA-Guatemala

Greetings from Estadio Mateo Flores. After spending the morning in the tranquil colonial village of Antigua (a must-see on any Central American trip), I have reached the futbol madhouse.

I encourage you to join the pregame, in-game and postgame discussion. If you are monitoring other internationals today, those comments are welcome as well.

I will update matters here as best I can, though the power and internet connections could vaporize at any moment. For now, skip to the continuation of this thread to get a sense of the scene.

Kickoff is approaching. The Americans just took the field for warm-ups, greeted by a cascade of jeers and whistles -- except from the few dozen USA fans sitting below our media area in the northwest corner. Ives Galarcep and Robert Wagman comprise the rest of the USA press corps here. When the Chapines entered, the reaction was deafening.

The Guatemalan cheerleaders and dance team -- I am not making this up -- are very excited for the match to begin.

USA LINEUP (4-4-2): Howard; Cherundolo, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Pearce; Dempsey, Bradley, Mastroeni, Lewis; Donovan, Ching.

GUATE LINEUP (4-5-1): Trigueno; Cabrera, Flores, L. Rodriguez, Gallardo; M. Rodriguez, Thompson, Contreras, Ramirez, Garcia; Ruiz.

Five hours before kickoff, the corner of Seventh Avenue and Mateo Flores Street was bustling with activity. Blue-clad supporters, with and without tickets, gathered at the top of an incline that led to the stadium, a concrete hulk with slate-gray walls lying in a shallow ravine. The Rose Bowl, it is not.
Kiosks lined the street, which was closed to vehicular traffic, and merchants selling t-shirts, Dr. Seuss-style hats, headbands, snacks and, of course, flags were doing brisk business. Security guards frisked every ticket holder and special forces with automatic weapons at their side watched attentively.
The security presence was intimidating to an outsider, but the mood was merry as fans banged drums and inflatable sticks as they made their way to the venue. Inside, new seats in different shades of blue, a video scoreboard and a rich, green field provided stark contrast to the drab exterior. The musical arrangement included Pink Floyd and the Electric Light Orchestra.
A cool rain spoiled an otherwise delightful afternoon in this capital city, which sits at 4,900 feet, but as kickoff approached, the skies had cleared somewhat. Weather had been an issue for the U.S. team for several days, hastily uprooting its training camp in Miami ahead of Tropical Storm Fay. Upon arriving here, the team had to arrange to use a pair of small facilities.
Normally, the stadium is available for use by the visiting team the day before the match, but Tuesday's heavy storm disrupted those plans. Thanks to the assistance from a Guatemalan national working at the U.S. Embassy, the team was able to practice for about an hour before daylight faded over the dilapidated, unlit park.
The Americans actually began their World Cup qualifying schedule in June, but Barbados was hardly an obstacle in a two-game, second-round series that resulted in a 9-0 aggregate score. Not so long ago, the Americans would feel fortunate to escape with a tie in an environment like this one, but as the program has progressed and more U.S. players have gained experience in Europe, expectations have evolved.
Guatemala is not expected to seriously challenge for a World Cup berth, but with a 3-0 exhibition victory over Bolivia two weeks ago at RFK Stadium, the Chapines, as well as their supporters, were brimming with confidence.

Are there any sam's army folks there?

Tortured Soccer Fan Alert: Tampa and the Angels taking their time on the deuce. 4-3 in the third, let's hope they finish by ten. Although I'd hope ESPN would start the US match on Classic if need be.

Canada is up 1-0 on Jamaica! Anyone know who scored for them?

Posted by: CACuzcatlan | August 20, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Looks like it was heartbreak for Suriname, conceding twice in the last two minutes. A win would have put them in good shape early in a weak group.

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Jamaica ties it at 1-1

Julio Cesar "Rambo" de Leon curled a perfect freekick from 25-28 yards over the wall and off the underside of the crossbar near the upper 90. Honduras' 1st real scoring chance after Mexico had been dominating.

Crowd is starting to chant for Cuauhtemoc Blanc.

Baseball game now tied :-( Bottom 8th. I plead to the Gods of Televised Soccer to grant Tampa Bay a home run and shut out the Angels so that we only waitbanother half inning.

Anyone know if there's a backup plan for ESPN2 if this stupid baseball game goes on an on? 4-4 in the 8th - we might not see ANYTHING from Mateo Flores tonight?

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Man the baseball's going to extra innings.

Posted by: pigman sweet | August 20, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Too lacking on creativity in the midfield... just hoping Bradley-son and Pablo-ld can avoid getting carded in the first half ... going down a man is the only way we lose this

I wonder if it is better in person than it looks on TV.

real smart, Cherundolo. can we go one game without a silly yellow card?

Posted by: jamie | August 20, 2008 10:32 PM | Report abuse

I'm a very casual reader of this blog, and for that matter any blog, but any reason that a Mastroeni and Lewis are playing. Seems unlikely either would be on the roster in 2010, and if they are, wouldn't we be in trouble.

Posted by: questions | August 20, 2008 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Um, Beckham is playing tomorrow night?

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Damn - I got cocky and Mexico scored a beauty

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Damn! Jusat after my last post Pavel Pardo blasts in a mid-range shot to tie it up for Mexico. 15 minutes plus stoppage at the Azteca...

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I'm surprised Lewis is out there.

ooooo...great start by Howard...that was nice...

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:34 PM | Report abuse

2-1 Mexico

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 10:35 PM | Report abuse

And Pearce, too, is another surprise.

The guys up front are looking good (but nothing to show for it, really).

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Clock strikes midnight at the Azteca and the cinderella catrachos start turning into pumpkins!

Pavel Pardo with another goal - he takes an angled free kick from the flank. Instead of anyone heading it - it bounces in the area and off the far post and goes in.

Then Honduras (and supposedly Concacaf's) best striker gets redcarded - apparently for poor usage of vocabulary.

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 10:37 PM | Report abuse

dangerous run by Guatemala, and then a red card for Honduras. anyone see what happened?

Posted by: jamie | August 20, 2008 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Ow! Mexico winning 2-1 and Honduras' Maynor Figueroa gets a red card. Ouch.

Who gave Landycakes the concrete boots for this match?

Posted by: Dupont Circle | August 20, 2008 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Poorly lit stadium in Guatemala City. They must not play many night matches.

Posted by: Bill in Md. | August 20, 2008 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Pearce was ASLEEP on that.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:40 PM | Report abuse

I like how Ching and Dempsey is playing. Duece is mixing it up with the Chapines.

Posted by: Bill in Md. | August 20, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

You know, they aren't tight on Ching -- they could pop one over/through to him.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

what other options are there at left back? Move Bocanegra back there? Spector when healthy? Or is Pearce the only option?

Posted by: questions | August 20, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Is there a sniper? That's the second time he has fallen down.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

sorry, I meant to say David Suazo got redcarded for Honduras. They were apparently complaining that Blanco was offsides on Pardo's freekick goal. Replay seemed to show he was OK when the kick was taken - he didn't touch the ball anyway so whether or not he was involved in the play would be the question (the ball did bounce right next to him and he was in front of the keeper).

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Let's remember to throw gallons of piss at Ramirez when they play the return fixture

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

would it be too much to ask for Telemundo to keep the score on the screen along with the time?

Posted by: jamie | August 20, 2008 10:44 PM | Report abuse

sorry, I don't know who got redcarded for Honduras because Suazo is still out there. Less than 5 minutes plus stoppage remain...

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Excellent reminder of the crap refereeing the US can expect when in CONCACAF quallies. Both cards absurd. Both will haunt...

There's Mastro's obligatory card. Not sure if he touched the Fish.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:49 PM | Report abuse

If we're gonna score, we better do it quick, 'cuz there's no way we're finishing this game with 11 men.

Posted by: Dupont Circle | August 20, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Harkes is right -- we need to slow this down, pass it around...

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

This is starting to look like another O-O Guat bunker -- unless the US goes down a man, which also looks to be reasonably likely.

Posted by: mjk | August 20, 2008 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Dive #4 for Ramirez.

Posted by: MK | August 20, 2008 10:55 PM | Report abuse

Wow, a defender finally came up! Dolo with a good ball.

That's why I want Wynne on the team.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Good call by the Surinamese ref on Heath Pearce's unintentional handball. A lot of CONCACAF refs have favored the home team on any kind of borderline (sometimes not even borderline) calls.

Posted by: garbaggio | August 20, 2008 10:56 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Sasha in for Bradley.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Come on Landon, sharper please!

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

seriously, is everyone on the US wearing lead boots? The first touch is killing them.

Posted by: bristol | August 20, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

gotta be pretty long odds that the U.S. would have 3 cards with none of them going to Gooch.

Posted by: jamie | August 20, 2008 11:00 PM | Report abuse

High pressure by the US works, Pablo gets it.

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 11:00 PM | Report abuse

That reaction is fine but Dolo spiking a ball gets a yellow.

Posted by: MK | August 20, 2008 11:02 PM | Report abuse

Ladies, don't wear white in the rain.

This formation is not working. No production coming up the wings. Dempsey is useless but that's probably due to the fact that he's played out of position. I would suggest bringing in another forward but I'd rather keep EJ on the bench.

Man, sometimes I get embarrased watching hispanics soccer players throw themselves like ----ssy. As a hispanic-american its a disgrace, both of Mexico, quate, honduras are all thrwoing themselves on the floor. Is there no PRIDE in there HEARTs to play a fair game like MEN.

I wish Lewis and Donovan would play forward...too many back passes. I would sub Hadjuk or Demerit for Pierce...he's getting burned on his flank.

Anyone want to start a Mastroeni (Or Mast-ree-oh-nee if you are John Harkes) red/second yellow card pool? I've got the 66th minute.

(Bradley should sub him off for Edu if he'd like to finish the game with 11 players).

Costa rica 1 ES nil 2nd half

Posted by: Kev | August 20, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

that was an awesome commercial from us soccer

Posted by: cubkid | August 20, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

@ tmc,

I dunno about keeping 11 on the field by subbing Mastroeni...I mean com'on Bradley "stupid lazy tackle in the 2nd" Bradley Jr. is still out there. He started looking like he had tired legs before the half. You know what that means.

Posted by: Kosh | August 20, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

I'd sub mastro for kleistjan here. Sacha is on form and not carrying a yellow. Its an offensive sub but to beat the forthcoming bunker we will need creativity. So I prefer him to edu here. If demerit is avail I' d sub him for dolo -- guat's best chance of winning is going up a man.

Posted by: mjk | August 20, 2008 11:19 PM | Report abuse

@ kosh

True, both Mastroeni and Bradley are entirely too card-prone for my comfort. Mastro already went studs-up AFTER his yellow in the first half ...

Posted by: tmc | August 20, 2008 11:23 PM | Report abuse

Wow...Lewis/Bradley for nothing...and diving header had a chance...

Posted by: RK | August 20, 2008 11:23 PM | Report abuse

There will be lots of space and hopefully Pearce gets some help from Beasley because he's been getting toasted on that wing. This should be an interesting finish to this one.

Posted by: Bill in Md. | August 20, 2008 11:43 PM
--------------------------------------

I didn't think it was a gutsy call. Cabrera went in recklessly, didn't have the advantage to reach the ball, obviously made direct contact with Lewis' head. It's a dangerous play, that could have only been a red card. Plus, once the ref saw the amount of blood on Lewis' face, you knew he had to give a red.

Wow! What a second half. I'm not sure if we deserved the 3 points but with their stupid red card and Ruiz's dirty play with Howard, Guatemala didn't deserve to get anything from this match. Heckuva match by Howard, and the team held the lead in the end. Hope that Lewis is okay after that headbutt and elbow.

we looked bad - even overmatched - at times, and the refereeing was occasionally good, but mostly terrible, so that was about the best possible result. i think Pearce would trade his next 5 caps for some oxygen right about now. thankfully, Guatemala had no finishing skills whatsoever and Howard was a stone wall.

i'm not overly concerned about the poor play given the hostile atmosphere, the wet field and the altitude so long as it doesn't carry over to the next few games.

YES!!!

For all you Guate are tough people out there I want to say this, I saw nothing but a bunch of hacking, cheating, useless pieces of crap playing dirty out there. They should all be ashamed of themselves. That was not soccer that was just stupid classless, talentless brutality. Now EAT that 1-nil and enjoy!!

CONCACAF needs to address this crap. That is not soccer. There needs to be some bans after that pathetic display. Man I thought I hated Mexico, but this bunch of no talent a$$ clowns hate taught me that I simply did not know how to hate enough. I cannot wait for them to come state side.

Carlos Ruiz needs to be heckled in every MLS stadium for the crap he pulled tonight. If this were England he would never dream of taking his a$$ back to the league after what he did.

I have never been so pi$$ed off after a win. Now I need to go to sleep calm down and enjoy this win tomorrow.

F that poser team!!

Very important three points away from home in that dark alley.

I can't think of a worse performance by a referee. I have no clue what the standard of a foul is any more.

What a disgrace...

Posted by: JkR | August 21, 2008 12:14 AM

Well, in his slight defense, that was a prison match. CONCACAF might as well be San Quinton.

What was the "puta" chant in the stadium after the match.

poor sports in mexico and central america are really a shame, never trust a dude with long finger nails. Gross...They're either doing to much coke, picking up pieces of meat at their butcher job with em, or fighting like women.
Again Gross.
Gaute Fan 08 how you like us now?
Screw the Olympics, Ching was a better choice than Cooper in this match.
Make it home safe now Goff!!!!

In defense of Guatemala, they have some skilled players. Their red card was really stupid and killed the momentum they'd built. They've got a couple of really dirty players. Loved the subtle pick that Ching set for Boca on the corner.

And to all the haters who say that all that Beas can do is run fast and straight, I hope you watched this evening's match.

Really, the filthy Guats are just insulting the good people of Ecuador, who really made the saying famous.

Posted by: Kev | August 21, 2008 12:22 AM | Report abuse

Well, until things got chippy . . . Ruiz and the foul on Lewis . . . we were getting outplayed.

Posted by: delantero | August 21, 2008 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Two things:

(1) Man, Howard's clearances are horrible. How many back passes did he put out of bounds?
(2) On ESPN's spot-graphic of Ching on the goal, anyone see the Guat defender take a little kick at the goal-scorer? Thugs, all of 'em.

Posted by: Kevin | August 21, 2008 12:25 AM | Report abuse

That launch of Cabrera elbow first to Lewis was CRIMINAL. I hope FIFA reviews it and he is banned from FIFA for a while. Lewis will be lucky if he is back playing in the next couple of weeks.

Guatemalan national team has always done the same: play dirty. Ruiz and company are classless trash.

Posted by: juanma | August 21, 2008 12:27 AM | Report abuse

I am glad Ruiz is moving to Toronto. Let the Canucks deal with him because I would not want him on any US team. We should revoke his visa and let his hacker type football only be played North of our border. Hope he freezes his a$$ off in Toronto.
What a piece of scum.

It would not surprise me if the Guatemalen FA put a compliant against the ref and get a decision in their favor because of bad lighting in the stadium.

the irony is that Ching plays on one of the two thugiest teams in MLS.Still love "the poor man's McHead" though.
If the US could steer some of these Big American Kids away from the other football, in ten or fifteen years the US would be pretty unstoppable. Hit the Gym kids! Just look at the US Olympic BMX team!

Dumb giveaways, dumb yellow cards, Bradley outcoached by Maradiaga, and only Howard, Gooch, Bocanegra, Ching, and Beasley come out of the game looking like international-class players. This'll get us to the hexagonal, but honestly, if we play 10 hex games like this we will be looking at a playoff against a CONMEBOL team, at best.

Take the 3 points, hope Lewis is OK, and let's never speak of this game again.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | August 21, 2008 12:40 AM | Report abuse

chestrockwell: go to sleep and tomorrow you will wake up feeling differently. US won for the first time in Guatemala. They won even though they were hacked, intimidated, crappy field, etc. I think this was a great opening to this group play and a learning lesson for games to come. The US showed its superiority despite all the crap.

Posted by: juanma | August 21, 2008 12:48 AM | Report abuse

Another thought -- planning ahead a bit, but I think Howard needs to pick up a cheap yellow for stalling at the end of the T&T game in September. Let him be suspended for the Cuba game at RFK, which will likely be our easiest match. Don't risk losing him when we might need him.

Posted by: Kevin | August 21, 2008 12:59 AM | Report abuse

Kevin, I guarantee you that Howard's instructions were to avoid short passes no matter what, and to play clearances long and out to the sides. Bradley wanted to avoid counters and defensive giveaways. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

We did not field a very technical team, but I bet that was deliberate. Bradley anticipated Guate tactics perfectly. Did we make mistakes? Yes. Did we give up a goal? No. And we left with only one serious injury, one ejection, and three points, which is an unprecedented success as far as I'm concerned.

Now when we play a game that we should be able to control, in an easier atmosphere, I'll be disappointed if Bradley prioritizes experience over skill and coaches safety first. But this? I'm over the moon. Great win.

WAY TO GO DOLO, YOU IDIOT!!!

Everyone out there on the US team is fighting their A$$e$ off getting cheap shotted and you go and get a yellow on a throw in-call.

Then, you better that move by getting a red because you get pushed and GRAB A GUY'S ANKLE in retailation!!!

Nice composure from a veteran.

Those Howard clearances were on purpose. He started doing it to kill time (and get booed) after Dolo's 2nd yellow.

Great match by our boys!

We got the result but overall our play was not good. Also, once again we committed dumb fouls.

Posted by: joel | August 21, 2008 8:57 AM | Report abuse

It is amazing that our GK gets kicked in the face and gets a yellow for it. I give Bradley credit for his tactics, but E. Lewis was pathetic. Please retire from International Soccer. I am sorry he got hurt because he has been a great US Nat, but come on. Quick name two young stars that would have been better: R. Rogers and S. Holden. I love watching CONCACAF because after every game I can say that was the worst officiated game ever. Also kudos to Bradley's late subs. Goodbye Cherundolo and hello Wynne, but with Hejduk starting. Not a bad start despite the uglyness.

Also can someone please tell Landon that he is always playing at RFK. He is so hit or miss when it comes to his form, but he is always on top of his game at RFK!
