Matchday: United-FCD

Greetings from Frisco.

Gonna be a hot one.

I had the great displeasure of sitting among a group of Redskins fans on the flight from National to DFW last night. Apparently, domestic flights are now BYOB. Go 'boys. (Not really.)

In case you have not noticed following last night's MLS results, United is no longer in the playoffs. Of course, a victory today at the House of Pizza would change things. I'm figuring a 1-1 draw.

I will be back shortly with DCU's lineup and subs.

DCU LINEUP: Crayton; Namoff, Peralta, McTavish, Guerrero (left back); Fred, Simms, Quaranta, Khumalo; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Wells, Martinez, Zaher, Vide, Thompson, Cordeiro, Dyachenko.

Guerrero has been called up by Honduras for a pair of World Cup qualifiers (Oct. 11 vs. Canada, Oct. 15 at Jamaica), which means he will miss two DCU regular season games (Oct. 12 at Houston, Oct. 16 vs. N.E.) and a Champions League match (Oct. 9 at Saprissa).

As usual, this is the prime location for pregame, in-game and postgame discussions.

Game's on Telefutara today. Has to be better than ATL-Car that is on now in Atlanta.

Considering our recent play (and contrasting it with the play of Dallas), 1-1 doesn't sound that upsetting. On the other hand, this is a team that we should beat, even without Gallardo and (possibly) Quaranta. Rocha's ability to play the long ball accurately is what worries me most, since we're so soft down the middle as of late. Perhaps Peralta's return will shore things up.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | September 28, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Must win.

Posted by: LN Hunter | September 28, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Interesting that Martinez is riding the pine. Soehn must be pissed.

VAMOS UNITED!

Posted by: strago | September 28, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

LETS DO THIS!

Posted by: christiannn | September 28, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

I like that lineup, very much.

Posted by: Mike | September 28, 2008 2:12 PM | Report abuse

I don't particularly like this lineup.

I can see why Soehn would want to put Guerrero at LB, as he's simply been phenomenal for us this year. I'd rather have Namoff and the bench and Martinez at RB.

WOOHOO! MORENO IS STARTING!

Posted by: Anthony The Great | September 28, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

This season has been a roller coaster ride. At this point, I just hope United finishes strong.

Posted by: Tim | September 28, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

MUST WIN.

Posted by: VirginiaFan | September 28, 2008 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Moreno and Peralta are back and Vide's on the bench. This is gonna be too easy.

The Dallas sucker XI:
Sala
Moor-Serioux-Pitchkolan-Wagner
Rocha-Saragosa-Richetti
Guarda
Cunningham-Cooper

D.C. should easily beat these crap-heads!

HELP! WHo is showing the game?

Newspaper says the game is on FSC. On-screen guide says FSC showing Italian soccer. Comcast "crawler" says game on Comcast. On-screen guide says Comcast showing REdskins kickoff. If it's only on Telefutura, I'm can't watch (FIOS).

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | September 28, 2008 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Will this game air on FIOS? I don't think i get telefutura :(

Anyone got a link to an online stream?

Posted by: GoUnited | September 28, 2008 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Telefutura, which should be channel 47 or 14 locally.......not sure how that translates to your local cable.

Posted by: marksman | September 28, 2008 2:43 PM | Report abuse

14! YES! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Posted by: GoUnited | September 28, 2008 2:46 PM | Report abuse

If you have Comcast in the Bethesda area it's channel 9.

What time is the united game?

What's the prognosis on attendance considering pointy football down the street will have kind of a big game. I'm going with 8k.

Go 'boys =P

It is on Telemundo/telefutura. Local channel 15.
GoUnited...I looked up on FiOs channel and I think it's the same number, 15. It would listed as Telemundo .

Telemundo and Telefutura are NOT the same channel. This game is on Telefutura, period.

What the heck is with the football lines in the SSS???

Posted by: marksman | September 28, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

I posted information on how to tune in to Telefutura on several cable and satellite systems in Arlington/Alexandria in the previous thread.

Posted by: The Jeff | September 28, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

I was wondering the same thing 'marksman' - Pizza Hut park isn't supposed to have American football lines...

Rocha scores off freekick that everyone watches bounce into the net.
Nice job guys.
1-0 in 9th minute.

I think they play HS football games there for extra revenue.

Did Crayton just completely misplay that ball?

Posted by: J | September 28, 2008 3:15 PM | Report abuse

WTF was Crayton looking at?

Posted by: Gooner | September 28, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

nice ball watching, especially you Crayton. That was sweet, I give you a 10! I'm switching back to the Milan Derby. DC is awful.

Posted by: peridigm | September 28, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

So that has to rank as one of the two softest goals DC has given up this year -- along with the McTavish blunder in Toronto....

Posted by: Fisch Fry | September 28, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

DCU does not deserve to be in the playoffs this year. They are crap right now. too many games, not enough goals and no consistency.

Crap!

Posted by: therealfootball | September 28, 2008 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Crayton has some making up to do. No more goals allowed this game please.

Posted by: DCUMD | September 28, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Has Crayton been hanging out with Wells? Will we ever have a useful GK on this team again? That was just pathetic. I'm not sure this team belongs in the playoffs at this point.

Posted by: Soehn | September 28, 2008 3:42 PM | Report abuse

At '36 we look tired, slow and have no ambition toward goal whatsoever. No possession no movement, blah. This season is detiorating before our very eyes.

Posted by: sbg | September 28, 2008 3:44 PM | Report abuse

That's why we won't see Cooper represent the US of A

Posted by: Anonymous | September 28, 2008 3:44 PM | Report abuse

I know this doesn't relate to DC United but there are a lot of soccer fans here. Does anyone know why Toronto FC play all there home games in the afternoon?

Posted by: Jake | September 28, 2008 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Why not Vide for Quaranta?

Posted by: Soehn | September 28, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

i now have no clue what is going through soehn's head
and did you see how pissed quaranta was when he came out??

Posted by: erik | September 28, 2008 3:47 PM | Report abuse

It looks like they are playing with 3 at the back and McT in the middle.

Posted by: Soehn | September 28, 2008 3:48 PM | Report abuse

Anyone watching the english link or know spanish well enough to know if Quaranta is injured or not?

With the way Moreno is playing, I was thinking that Quaranta might be our best chance of winning. And now he's gone.

Maybe Soehn resents that because he knows his job is at stake, not so much Quaranta's

After watching the replay of the goal, I really think Crayton could have saved that. It was difficult, but he should have read the service better.

Posted by: Soehn | September 28, 2008 4:03 PM | Report abuse

This team is useless going forward.

No speed minus Boyzz who is playing so deep he might be touching the prostate.

No creativity. No one wants to take on defenders--minus Jaime who is way off his game . . . but at least he's trying to move the ball . . and on TV, I can't tell if people are running off of him looking for the ball . .

That goal was great. Four DCU players in great position just watching the lovely curve of the ball . . jiminy.

Posted by: delantero | September 28, 2008 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Unless Quaranta is injured, thats a terrible move.

Paraphrase of Telefutura Analysts:

"Is this the best scheme for Soehn to use considering the players he has on the pitch?"

"I think so. With the injuries they've had, and remember, of the players on the team, 7 were here last year, 11 are new."

Posted by: ugh | September 28, 2008 4:11 PM | Report abuse

We have to play a 3-5-2. It will let play off of Jimbob Moreno

I've been silent until now, but can bear it no more. The number of injuries tell me there is something seriously wrong with our conditioning program. The lack of speedy, passionate, team play tells there is something wrong with the coaching. Those responsible must GO! Preferably before the end of the season!

Jaime's red card and an MLS loss may be cause for a change in strategy regarding prioritization of CCL and MLS. I think this means DCU should field as strong an 11 as possible on Wednesday - Gallardo (if available), Quaranta (if available), Moreno, Emilio (if available), etc.

3-0 Dallas=Sh*t.

The game was f***ing pathetic. Cordeiro seemed like the only descent player out there unless my eyes are going bad again. Dyastinko did about what he could-which is pretty close to nothing.

We need to recruit a few more high $$$$ players (like last year)---- that really paid off !!! No offense = loss!!

Posted by: Mike | September 28, 2008 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Thank you...thank you...thank you sooooo much Jaime for getting that red card. I was cheering when it happened. It not only guarantees that United will miss the playoffs, but should finally get Soehn fired. But, what I will take away from this game the most is not that Martinez and Naimoff are the only ones who don't walk around with the ball on their feet, not the fact that Jaime tries to dribble through 10 players so he can walk the ball over the goal line, and not the fact that Soehn should be fired every time he puts Dyachencko in the game.........no, it is that for 5 seconds during this game, DC United did triangles and actually controlled the ball and advanced it FORWARD for 50 yards as a result. TRIANGLES!!!! The ultimate sign of a team that understands soccer and is actually trying to earn their paycheck! Alas, United did it for 5 seconds. I shall remember it forever! Now, how do we get the loser front office removed for impersonating people who understand soccer???

The defense was awful today. This year's off-season moves has not worked out as planned. But firing Tom Soehn is not the answer. If look at the continual success of Houston and New England they have the same coach at the helm. Allow Soehn time to right the right ship. This constant changes of MLS coaches is what hurts the league. I can see United firing after three years of poor performance like Fernando Clavijo at Colorado. After one bad season, give me a break.

Are joking w/ this reasoning? The coaches at Houston and New England have remained because they have been SUCCESSFUL!!!!

You should be a speech writer for Bush & Co.

Posted by: Soehn the exit | September 28, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

no he should be canned because of bad decisions made as coach. the team has not progressed - yes, I know injuries - which shows me that soehn is out of his league coaching-wise. he just doesn't have it. no big deal - lots of good players can't coach. but we should sit by and just let a guy made tons of bad decisions and not be penalized for it, especially when so much was riding on this year.

Posted by: bad decisions | September 28, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

A lot of our season problems can be correctly pointed to two factors that Soehn had little control over (and these factors were symbiotic): injuries and a congested schedule.

That said, the third factor that has killed us this season is: our inadequate defense. Now some times we've been stuck playing an inexperienced player like Pat Carroll back there. But most of the time, our defensive problems have occurred with the guys who were allegedly our frontline defense (Peralta, Martinez, Namoff, Burch, McTavish and Wells). At some point you look at the errors and mistakes and conclude that either the coach isn't getting it done organizationally and/or the coach is making terrible decisions about who is good enough to play.

Not all of our talent decisions have played out. But credit Payne and Kasper on this: when the team has needed someone (a third forward, a starting outside mid) we've looked and tried to make moves.

Posted by: JoeW | September 28, 2008 6:27 PM | Report abuse

that last line should read: "we shouldn't sit by and just let a guy make tons of bad decisions and not be penalized for it..." sorry about that.

Posted by: bad decisions | September 28, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

I have not even considered calling for Tommy's head, but watching this team not even try to push the ball forward and then give it away so easily?!!!!,....maybe a coaching change is in order.

Today, I saw a team that is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. They are beaten, and little fight left in them. The combination of a too small senior roster depleted by injuries, and a schedule only a sadist could dream up have destroyed this team. The best thing that can happen now is for them to play out the season with some fighting spirit and earn their roster spots for next year. I am not certain if firing Soehn is wise or not? Is he the problem, I don't know, is he the solution to the problem, again I don't know. He has been forced to manage a team with s senior roster of only 16 players for more than half the season. For next season the club need to assess if they can continue to wait for Olsen. It is sad to say it but they can't afford to waste a senior roster spot on him again. A question for Steve: Did Dallas do any market research prior to building their stadium in Frisco, a place that is so clearly too distant from their fan base. I am not familiar with metro Dallas, so I don't know where their fan base is if in fact it exists at all. I do know however that Frisco is rather distant from downtown Dallas. Their attendance was better at the cotton bowl.

It hurts to see DC United like this. The team looks and plays like a wounded animal.
The Mexican broadcasters said something that I had not thought about: "The team is not fit, due to the team leaving the fitness work to indiviual players, and it looks like alot of them did not do the fitness work". Is this true? Does the team have a fitness coach or not? Does Soehn leave it up the players to keep fit or what? Does anybody know anything about this?
Wait till next year MLS!!!

I don't want to hear anymore whining about injuries or fixture congestion. I don't want to hear about the heat in Dallas. This team has to take responsibility for its season, now. They were beaten for every 50-50 ball, beaten in every quadrant of the field. The time is now.

The season is not over. Lots of teams are in the playoff race. It won't be easy to get in, but this week will be a chance for DC to get back home and re-focus on the task at hand.

Enough of the excuses folks, Houston has had the same schedule as United and they haven't fallen to pieces, they've actually gotten stronger despite injuries and NO DP! DC UTD is unfit, unorganized and unfocused. That is 100% a coaching problem. This team started falling apart at the end of last season when Soehn finally started to make his mark on this team by benching Boswell and Carroll. Umm where are they now.

Posted by: Soehn the exit | September 28, 2008 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Nowak's team had the heart and talent, he wanted to win everything, even friendlies.

TOmmies team lacks heart to win any game, they use excuses, and I am fed up with it. IF you go into a game saying we are down 10 injured players, yadda yadda yadda, what kind of motivation is that for the players? NO ONE WANTS TO GO OUT THERE and WIN. When crayton arrived I bet he was suprised that everyone just accepted losing. HE seemed to be the only one fired up.

If we gave rongen 3 years, why should we give Tommy 2 years, at least rongen won a championship as our coach.

lol
I turned to the skins game after a while, this team is bad.

This is exactly what you can expect with a team with half it's starters always hurt and a salary cap of peanuts which gives no team any depth.

RAISE THE SALARY CAP NOW!!!!!!!

Allow Soehn time to right the right ship.
Posted by: Tim | September 28, 2008 5:54 PM

He's had the time since winning the Supporter's Shield last season and then bowing out to Chicago in the playoffs. Bowing out of the CCC. Bowing out of the SS race this season, and the SuperLiga. Not to mention showing up small in the CCL and now the playoff race.

How many chances are YOU willing to give him? For me he's had his chances, along with Ashford & Simpson, and possibly Kaspar.

And I wish everyone would stop signing "anonymous" when calling for the coaches head. At least have the decency to put your name behind your comment.

Thx,

Jay!

Getting Crayton in first third of the season= 2nd or 3rd place position at this point.

What a drag of a year so far

Posted by: Taylor | September 28, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

I don't buy all this piling on Soehn. It isn't his fault that Gallardo has been AWOL for half the season, that Peralta has been MIA, that Fred, Santino, and now Emilio have had hamstring problems, that Ben has been out all year except for a few brief moments, that Jaime has had Bolivian national team duty and now a red card, that the schedule is so fcuked up, that, as with any MLS team, once you get by the starting 11, there's no quality because there's no pay. Consider, for example, that a couple of years ago we lost a first round draft choice, a college All-American, to Puerto Rico because all we offered was $17K. The WNBA, for Crissakes, has a $42.5 minimum, with an apartment and a car thrown in. What kind of Mickey Mouse league offers a first round draft choice 17K?

You can second-guess any coach's tactical decisions, but over-all, given the hand he's been dealt, I don't see how in hell Soehn could have played it any better.

Posted by: Dave | September 28, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Soehn must go. Whether or not right at this moment would do any good for the team. But than again with no success with him what's the point keeping him and making things worst! Kaspar should take over the last few games and see what he can do since he along with Soehn combined recruited most of these players.

Posted by: td | September 28, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Hey Soehn the exit

The reason why they have been successful is due to the fact it's been the same coach, coaching the same players. Those teams who are consistently successful in MLS, has continuity in their coaches and rosters. You can't keep changing coaches and rosters and after one bad season. Look at the Galaxy and Red Bulls. There is no continuity in their coaches and rosters. They have not been successful in recent years. When United has had continuity in their coach and rosters, they had success. Rosters can be tweaked for success but not a major overhaul like this team had last off-season. This season was going to be uphill battle. If United does fire Soehn, they still need to a hire a coach they can get behind for two years and allow him to build a successful team.

P.S. You couldn't pay me to be a Bush speech writer.

YO WHIne! What were you saying?

How did United almost field it's best eleven and still lose like this?
Oh well, the skins win helps.

Posted by: dadryan | September 28, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

HEY TIM...

Again I find your line of reasoning inherently flawed. Simply having a coach around for a while with the same team in order to build continuity does not breed success.

Hell if it was that easy to build a winning franchise then even the Red Bulls could figure it out, just keep 'em around for a few years and ......voila they're winners!!

An example that defies that model is Novak; he took a mediocre team, made only a few player changes and in one season won the MLS cup while playing the most attractive soccer in the league.

This current team has the worst defense in DC history, attacks with no tactical nuance or speed and lacks any passion period.

No wonder Gallardo went home, who wouldn't want to get as far away from this train wreck as possible.

PS
Glad to know you're not tempted by the dark side.
