Matchnight: United-Dallas

Greetings from steamy RFK. Is it July again?

Almost six months into the season, and we have the first meeting between the clubs. They'll clash again in two weeks at Frisco.

The on-again, off-again negotiations concerning a possible DCU friendly against the Libyan national team in Tripoli have heated up and organizers are hoping to reach a deal for the sides to play this winter. Talks have reached this stage before, so don't be surprised if nothing comes of it. Hello, Gaddafi?

For a look at United's revolving roster, click here.

If you're not headed out to the ballpark tonight, you can watch the match live on Fox Soccer Channel starting at 7:30 p.m.

Back later with DCU's starting XI and eligible reserves

DCU: Crayton; Namoff, McTavish, Burch, Martinez; Kirk, Simms, Quaranta, Guerrero; Moreno, Khumalo. Subs: Wells, Cordeiro, Thompson, Doe, Emilio, Fred, Dyachenko.

Gallardo is not in uniform because of an ankle problem and a week-long illness. The team figured he is better off resting for Tuesday's Champions League match against Saprissa. Peralta is also out and hopes to return Tuesday.

As usual, this is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

There isn't any programming on WFED 1050 at the moment (6:15pm); either over the air or by stream.

Somthing seems awry....

WFED 1050 is back.....

Posted by: The_Whale | September 13, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Khumalo is starting? welcome to the team! I honestly don't know where we would be without that Ivan Guerrero trade. Looks like Santino will be in the playmaker role again with Kirk out wide right. We'll see how this all comes together.

This rain better stop. My picture's out!

That's why I'm not picking you, Cooper.

Posted by: Bob Bradley | September 13, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Is it really pronounced Quay-vas Kirk? Not Qua-vas?

Posted by: RK | September 13, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Crayton is nuts...

Posted by: RK | September 13, 2008 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Boy-Z is fast and is playing with confidence. He looks like a good pick up. Some of his touches aren't great but he is playing better than Kirk and Kirk has been here all year.

Crayton is indeed nuts, but he's way better than Wells. He's been a very good keeper for us and he brings the intensity. I think he enjoyed winning the US Open Cup more than any other player.

Posted by: diego r. | September 13, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse

looks like I missed a crazy first half. Tied with some new talent on the pitch, I like to see that. Crayton is nuts but in a good way (sometimes). Anything on the general flow of the game I missed almost the entire first half getting home from work.

Posted by: dc in asheville | September 13, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Crayton is nuts, but better than Wells. Yes, it' really pronounced Quay-vas and not Qua-vas

Posted by: person | September 13, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Does Limarzi realize that no one can hear him (except for the relatively few listeners who can get WFED's puny over-the-air signal)?

is it really claed robert francis katie staduim?
or else Max Bretos is a dirty lier..

Posted by: Spartan | September 13, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I think Tom left his wife for Rod and now they are leaving for Canada to have a big gay wedding. If Dyachenko marks Rocha we win and it is simple as that. Does anyone else think that Codeiro would have been a better sub than Dyanchenko? Please chime in!

Posted by: Soehn loves Dyachenko | September 13, 2008 9:33 PM | Report abuse

The additions seem to bring some pace to DC United's attack. Khumalo, Guerrero, Moreno, and even Qaranta created some fluid plays going forward. I don't think the team has created so many scoring chances (or moves toward goal that were off by a last touch) all year. Very unusual to look dangerous as often as they did in the first half. The pace made Guerrero look as good as he can be when connecting with others matching his speed. Team got slower when Kumalo and Guerrero came out.
Defensively, they managed to look good at times, and sloppy many others (duh, if you mark an attacker on a cross, they won't get an easy score!)
If this is a taste of what's to come, we may be on our way to another MLS Cup, finally.

Posted by: Lassiter | September 13, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunate result. We really deserved 3 poins out of this.

Khumalo looks like a good addition, hopefully he can continue to contribute. Painful games by Rod and Namoff.

Posted by: LN Hunter | September 13, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Dyachenko may not have marked his man but the pass should not have happened. I have not watched a replay of the goal but it looked like the D got caught in an offside trap. Saying that I don't think that Dyachenko brought that much to the game.

Posted by: dc in asheville | September 13, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

tie was deserved. don't think we deserved the win with the way we played. not tonight. fair result.

Posted by: disagree | September 13, 2008 10:06 PM | Report abuse

We had 13 corner kicks. They had 0. Yet neither team scored a goal off a corner.

The team is coached terribly on corners and has been for years.

Start as many players outside the box as possible and run onto the ball. You'll have a better chance at the ball more frequently. It's a fact. Check it.

Posted by: David | September 13, 2008 10:14 PM | Report abuse

I brought everything I always bring - late fouls, bad marking, missed chances and free balls to the other team.

Posted by: Rod | September 13, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

We had multiple chances to put the game away. We didn't, and it cost us.

Posted by: GoUnited | September 13, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Yeah it is time evaluate TS's tactics. I really do.

Posted by: td | September 13, 2008 10:25 PM | Report abuse

If Tino had marked his man we wouldn't have had the first goal against us. He and Gonzalo jawed all night.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 13, 2008 10:52 PM | Report abuse

@ td
Do TS's tactics involve missing open nets? If so, then they should be evaluated.

Posted by: Glaucon | September 13, 2008 10:53 PM | Report abuse

we really needed to win that game. And had plenty of chances to put it away. An entertaining match though. Both teams were out to play and try to score.

I saw a lot of frustration and exasperation out there tonight, which is not good. That was particularly from Tino, Jaime, and to a certain extent Martinez. The boys need to keep it together.

Khumalo was awesome! That ball to Jaime for the goal was superb.

what's the deal with the replay screen and giant scoreboard being dead? More Third World conditions for our team. Start digging in PG County now!

Posted by: Glenn | September 13, 2008 11:12 PM | Report abuse

Hey what was the deal with the video screen and the big score board being lights out?

That may be a luxury in bum fart egypt, but for bob's sake what the hell is going on at RFK? Nationals don't pay rent and have ultra delicious chili covered half smokes and what do the folks at RFK get?

Dude where are the toddler jerseys that are on the mls website?

Speaking of kids... What is up with all the parents wearing the *for the first 5,000 kids* DCU/?bank hat?
I coulda used a hat for my kid, instead of your GIGANTE bald head, nerdy soccer dad.
Lastly, team wise, Boyz in Da hood was running like a man with something to prove.
Loved it, down in 213 we saw a lot of him in the beginning, and then when he switched over Jaime scored!
Dude in Pitt was right about Boyz getting his crosses in. Inventive running, God dang I cant wait till Gallardo get's back in this hot mess, is going to blow up in some peoples faces.
Last year DC threw away a win when Dallas came to town, this year the got a tough point, that should have been 3...
What have we learned of this?

Posted by: dadryan | September 13, 2008 11:21 PM | Report abuse

I meant: what have we learned from this?
I am also hella confident about what this team wants to do in any given game. I think there is a lot of marginally proven talent in the roster, I'd even say that if we get healthy we have a fair amount of cat's who can hold strong in first team matches. YO VIDE! GET HEALTHY DOG!
Kirk was the biggest disappointment for me, but I didn't have the greatest seat in the house, and without a farking replay on the screen I'm stuck till I check back with the BTB.

Posted by: dadryan | September 13, 2008 11:29 PM | Report abuse

That feel like a loss....

I'd like to give props to the anthem singer. A nice version w/o any unnecessary embellishments that are unfortunately all too common among the anthem singing community.

HOnesetly Phelps, lil wayne, tina fey, what more could you want?

Posted by: dadryan | September 13, 2008 11:37 PM | Report abuse

Entertaining game but it's pathetic that the stadium couldn't get any highlights or videos up on the darkened big screen. It's especially lame that they honored the great 1998 team at halftime and couldn't show any of the old highlights. Coupled with the crappy PA system I wouldn't be surprised if half the crowd didn't know who those guys in suits on the field were.

I hope Fenty swallows some Potomac sewage tomorrow morning during the DC triathlon.

Plus the scoreboard operators still hadn't credited Dallas' 2nd goal about 5 minutes after it had happened.

2 very nice goals from DC. Khumalo was very active at withdrawn forward and looked good on either flank. I thought he could have had 3 assists if DC shot better. Quaranta's narrow angle goal from Guerrero's cross was reminiscent of Gallardo's "goal of the year" from Burch earlier this season. Except Guerrero and Tino kept the ball on the ground while Gallardo and Burch put lots of air under their combo.

Lightning Rod Dyachenko was good offensively tonight. Don't know if he had anything to do with Rocha's equalizer but he made nice passes to Emilio and Martinez as well as having a good shot that Sala parried away for a corner kick.

Who WAS the anthem singer, anyway???

Let's hope they fix the video screen before the USA-Cuba game. Otherwise it may feel like we're playing IN Cuba...

Honestly, M. phelps on snl is pretty funny for someone my age.

Total bs, with the TV.. I think you could watch the tvs in the concourse, to see the field action though right?
Nice to know that the stadium management are so IN TOUCH with their patrons...
All that anarchy really only makes the herb smoking in RFK that much more spiritually gratifying.
The BB doesn't lose steam when they don't see pictures of themselves do they?
The loud side was a little quieter than I've heard it in a while...
NO diss folks but I think the club could use more of a push in this tough stretch eh? Don't make me come over there.=-}
Still loving and singing The whoahwhoawoahh,La, la,la,la,la,la,la,la!
