Olsen Sidelined Again

D.C. United veteran Ben Olsen, who has been limited to one appearance this year because of on-going ankle problems, will be out another four to six weeks after an infection was discovered. He underwent a procedure Friday in the the area of his left ankle where screws had been placed.

Though he might not play again this year, the club does not plan to place him on the season-ending injury list. His salary counts against the cap regardless of his status and, although it would create a senior roster slot, the club already has one senior and one developmental opening. Midfielder Domenic Mediate (concussion) will be placed on the season-ending list.

The deadline to sign players and make trades is next Monday.

This is so sad. So sad.
Benny, we love you man!

time to take him out behind the barn and put him down

So no plans to promote Joe Vide back to a senior spot after taking one for the team to get Clayton? This doesn't sound right to me. Seems like Vide deserves the senior spot.

Real classy, ABM.

Shut it down for the season, Benny. Focus on next season.

This has to be frustrating for
Ben.

Ben wish you the best and hope that you can come back for the MLS championship game.

I guess they are giving Olsen the benefit of the doubt. If he can ever healup in time given the play offs and depending all on that he could possibly still be used sometime.

Any word on that young international player we signed? Carlos Will....Mejia??

Also one more thing, why did the beginning of the URL change from blog to 'voices'?

Sounds kinda lame. :|

not a fan of this move. and I second the Vide to a senior spot suggestion.

Glad we are keeping Benny on the sideline, even if he isn't dressing!! Hopefully his spirit, enthusiasm and positive attitude will help carry our guys into the playoffs and the championship!! Keep em fired up Benny !!

MLS Rumors reports signing Meija as a done deal.

Posted by: Jim B. | September 9, 2008 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Unless the DC staff are being very very optimistic, what's the harm in placing him on injury list? I can't believe they are keeping him around for sentimental reasons but I see no other reason to keep giving the fans false hopes. Shut him down for the season.

Posted by: Bart | September 9, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

yes, are there contract implications for the injury list? the ability to be on the bench, maybe? travel with the team? act as a de facto assistant trainer during practices? who knows with odd MLS rules?

Posted by: northzax | September 9, 2008 2:27 PM | Report abuse

It doesn't matter where they put him since they don't have time to find a replacement for him anyway.
Really looking forward to another freat foreign signing. Kaspar is the best.

Now an infection! Geez. Poor guy. Poor us.

And yuck! The screw in your ankle gets infected because too many doctors had it cut open and were sticking their grubby fingers in there too often.

Get well soon, Ben!

Is Meija the "surprise player" that Dave Kasper was referring to on Washington Post Live?

Posted by: TCompton | September 9, 2008 2:50 PM | Report abuse

He is not going to come back as a player so close this gaping hope and sign/bring someone healthy to play. Benny always has room for the coaching/staffing.
Here is hoping DC United will include CCL games tickets on the season tickets and NOT Super Liga crap. Super Liga must be dropped or if DC is invited DO NOT ACCEPT the invitation. Invitation...Garber's word

I see that Mejia has four caps and one goal. Could be worse. But, I can't find any records for him in the Honduran league. He's not even listed on the team's Wiki page, and the official site has no statistics. As a forward, I'm assuming he's scored some goals?

That's the kind of surprise player Kasper finds? Another age old average dude and not a speedy young dynamic player! We are hungry and hungry and hungry for some speedy, skillful agressive players.

I love Ben and I think he is a tremendous asset to the team, on and off the field ...
However, at this stage of the ballgame, I think it would be in the best interest of the club to be realistic and put him on the ending season injury list. Ben needs time to recover for the future, not force things or try to expedite things this late in the season ... these are my 2 cents.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 9, 2008 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Gosh Darn it! Ben Olsen heal up my man. We miss you on the field, but it's still good to have you on the sideline rallying the troops.
Your kid is going to be a handful anyway! Try to relax and enjoy every minute of it! Good luck to you and your better half Ben.
We miss you and hopefully you can make it back before the Quarter finals of the CCL!
Love you dude!!!

To the pro-Vide brigade:

Vide is young enough to be placed on the developmental roster. Khumalo isn't. It's not a matter of who is more important to the club, it's simply finding a way to get both players onto the roster. It's inconvenient for Vide, but he has already said he knew this might happen when he signed. He'll probably get an upgrade next season.

On Olsen:

This just sucks. I'm not going to try to play doctor from afar, or say whether he should end his season or not. I have no idea. All I know is that this has to be brutal for Benny.

On Khumalo:

Don't know much about him other than the name "Boyzzz". I see at least one person is writing him off already, so maybe they know something I don't.

================

In six months the Post will run an expose on gov't workers who spend all of their day reading blogs. This win them a Pulitzer, which the Post will have to ignominiously return when the Times' expose reveals that the Post manipulated the story by changing "blogs" to "voices."

Interesting.... Hmmm i guess its not mejia. Or shall i say Carlos Will as it seems he is commonly referred as. He seemed very promising but i am sure would cost a pretty penny.

I wonder what will happen next year though when i am sure Q' will be up for a pay raise? How much is he earning this season?

Posted by: Bolivian DC Fan | September 9, 2008 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Thank God. I thought the voices were in my head..

It's getting time to move Ben to the role that he has unofficially played...the spiritual leader, motivational assistant coach for this team.

He is a personification of United's gritty soul and having that continuity is important. No better place than in our coaching ranks...

...once he is settled about whether a return is possible and worth it.

Posted by: seahawkdad | September 9, 2008 6:43 PM | Report abuse

Ben,

It's over son, let it go because it's starting to get embarassing. You can be a wonderful coach at some level, probably college. Go ahead and move on in your live now.

Posted by: Tony | September 9, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Ben,

Don't listen to Tony, your grit and determination is no embarassment, its commendable. Keep on fighting, the fans are waiting for you.

Posted by: JAP | September 9, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse

If Ben still believes and wants to play, there's no embarrassment. The only embarrassing thing is those who want to write him off early.

As far as the logistics of the matter go though, he should request season ending injury status to allow Vide to pay his rent.

Posted by: viv | September 10, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

I love Ben Olsen, always been one of my favorite players, and I really admire his determination to get healed up. However, I think sometimes you just need to take a step back and realize, Dang, I could actually lose part of my leg! He is such a great player, but I'd like to see a whole person being that heart and sole of the team as an administrator or some kind of public figure; I don't want to see a partial former player.
