Thorpe gets the first win for DCU on mexican soil! Riiiiiiiiiight. That would be cool though.....

Posted by: boda united | October 21, 2008 9:11 PM | Report abuse

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Thorpe play.
Shallow bench though.
COME ON UNITED!!!

Posted by: andrew | October 21, 2008 9:12 PM | Report abuse

SG:

Thorpe's bucking the trend of United rookie 3rd stringers that never get to even make an appearance in a real game. So at least he's got that going for him...which is nice.

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | October 21, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Gee Andrew what do you want? They have a goalie, one defender, one midfielder and one forward...who needs more than that! Could always stick Crayton in central D - he tends to play out there anyway!

US College All-Stars (and some random foreign dudes) v. Cruz Azul.

Posted by: hoyanick | October 21, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Good to see Crayton, Simms and Doe starting on the bench - no need for them to get playing time tonight unless absolutely necessary. It would have been good if Wells, Vide and Dyachenko could have dressed and spared the others the trip.

So this and the next game for DC in CL is just to make up the schedule and get some pay checks?

Posted by: td | October 21, 2008 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Thorpe will score a goal!

Posted by: Anonymous | October 21, 2008 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Have not seen Thorpe on the pitch since Richmond.
I actually kind of like the looks of that lineup.
Let's see if Ben Olsen can fire up and coach these guys to victory!!!
Vamos United!!!

VAMOS UNITED. Go Thorpy. Win tonight, NY lose, um, everybody else lose that needs to lose. DC win on Sunday. We can win the Champs League and the MLS Cup!!!

VAMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Thorpe,

This match is an audition for you. Crayton may be our best CB.

Posted by: B.A. | October 21, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

td:

I just checked on the tiebreakers (as it is technically possible that it would go to tiebreakers rather than just points). If we won both our remaining games and Saprissa won both of its remaining games, Saprissa would have 10 points while us, Cruz Azul, and Marathon would all have 7 points. The first tiebreaker would be head-to-head amongst all 3 teams on 7 points, which is where we'd be eliminated. Marathon has gotten all 7 of its points thus far from games against United and Cruz Azul, while both DCU and Cruz Azul have Saprissa to thank for some points. Thus, even if the perfect scenario unfolded, Saprissa and Marathon would go through.

luis:

Ibrahim Koroma had (or, I suppose, still has) an infection in his knee. Otherwise, I'd imagine he'd be in tonight instead of Namoff. From what I recall, his infection might rule him out for the rest of the season, but that might not be correct. Maybe he'll be fit for the game at home against Marathon?

Posted by: Chest Rockwell | October 21, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else watching the highlights of the earlier match? Montreal's goal in the game was pretty impressive - and they have now advanced to the quarter finals.

Sooo I guess that the train horn is "in house" eh? I've noticed it in a previous CA hame game... How close is this stadium to peoples homes?

Posted by: dadryan | October 21, 2008 10:10 PM | Report abuse

and to add insult to injury they stuck us with Christian Miles yet again. where's my mute button...

Posted by: Glenn | October 21, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse

D.C. doesn´t stand a chance even against cruz azul´s second team. we´re too much for you. Anyway, it´s fun to see this kind of games to see how our youb players are developing (watch for Martin Galvan, he´s just 15 ans a future superstar)

Posted by: Héctor | October 21, 2008 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Hector:

I understand that Cruz Azul is a very talented team, but please understand the players in DCU uniforms tonight are at the VERY bottom of the depth charts.

Posted by: hoyanick | October 21, 2008 10:17 PM | Report abuse

The train horn is because of how Cruz Azul is known here in México "La maquina"

The stadium is in a very populated area of México city, is in front of the "Plaza México" the world´s largest bullfighting arena.

Stadium is almost ampty during concacaf games, truth is people is not very interested in seeing the teams we play against in this tournament and also is not easy to be able to go to the stadium during weekdays

Posted by: Héctor | October 21, 2008 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Prediction: Louis Crayton enters the game in the second half...

...as central attacking midfielder.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 21, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Kinda like how no one goes out to see DCU when they play the teams in this tournament at home.
So what does "La Maquina" mean?
Dude I thought thorpe broke his neck...

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | October 21, 2008 10:39 PM | Report abuse

my stream cuts out every 5 sec or so. Did Thorpe get red carded?

Posted by: dc in asheville | October 21, 2008 10:40 PM | Report abuse

That's completely ridiculous. Time wasting in the 31st minute?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | October 21, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Was that for delay or did I miss something? In the 32nd minute. WOW.

Thorpe may have been lucky not to draw a direct red on his yellow, so maybe this was a makeup.

Posted by: Ben | October 21, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Thorpe got his first yellow during the first 10 minutes of the game for a voyage out of the box that resulted in more Cruz Azul ankle than ball; then I think he got his second yellow for time-wasting.

Posted by: hoyanick | October 21, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

well, the referee really screwed the pooch there.

there's no way that horn could possibly be allowed under anyone's rules.

Posted by: Glenn | October 21, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

The yellow on the right side of MF was incomprehensible. This second yellow = red for a gk (for time wasting! At 30 mins!!) should be investigated.

Posted by: JkR | October 21, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

That horn is giving me flashbacks to when I coached a team that played on a field whose sideline was literally 10 yards from a train track.

Posted by: Ben | October 21, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

When is a goalie not allowed to take a goal kick from anywhere in the box and he jogged in the process to place the ball. The ref never warned him either. This ref would toss more famous MLS time wasters like Dario Sala, Joe Cannon and Matt Reis every game with that card happy attitude. The ref must be paid by NY or KC to ensure that Crayton had to play.

Posted by: Sylvester | October 21, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

High quality CONCACAF referees. Such incompetence is just unbelieveable. Welcome to CONCACAF.

Posted by: sbg | October 21, 2008 10:47 PM | Report abuse

1-0 Cruz Azul. It is a shame that we could not use guest players in this crap of a tournament.

Posted by: Sylvester | October 21, 2008 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Certainly not the first time we've been hosed by the refs in this tournament. I don't know why I expected anything different.

Posted by: Markus | October 21, 2008 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Has anyone here ever seen a card for time wasting in the 31st minute? the first half?

Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | October 21, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm baffled.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 21, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

What is up with the horn??

Terrible referee...he's been bad in National Team games he officiated and he's terrible once again tonight. Stop filling Jack Warner's CONCACAF pockets with $ and invest in some refs that will call the game fairly and have some backbone.

Posted by: Ben Canada | October 21, 2008 10:50 PM | Report abuse

It would seem that in the replay that there was some sort of miscommunication with the ref and Thorpe and with the noise who could blame him.
Never mind fireworks in front of these foreign teams hotels, I'm saving up for a train horn to install in our Element! I wonder if I could get one that would fit on a bicycle?...:-) Now that'd be a party.

Posted by: dadryan | October 21, 2008 10:51 PM | Report abuse

I have never seen time waiting so early in the game, give him a warning if anything since he HAD a early yellow and move on with the game. How do you expect a team to be competitive being a man down after 30 minutes specially doing something non aggressive to anyone on the field.

Posted by: Ben Canada | October 21, 2008 10:53 PM | Report abuse

Can't wait to hear Goff's take on this.

Posted by: hoyanick | October 21, 2008 10:54 PM | Report abuse

MLS has it's own officiating issues - but my gawd.

CONCACAF is going to have a real problem ever making this tournament profitable with poop displays like that from their officials.

Use a static electricity generator on the bicycle to drive an air compressor for the horn. You might have to pedal really fast.

US College All-Stars (and some random foreign dudes) v. Cruz Azul.

Posted by: hoyanick | October 21, 2008 9:15 PM
--------------------------------------------

We're hardly talking about a US COllege all-star team. If they were, they'd be much more competitive.

There are no words for how ridiculous the red card was. I was wondering myself, before the ref ran into the screen, why Thorpe was carrying the ball over to the far side of the goal. Watching the replay, it's almost as if he was reacting to what he must've thought was a wave to play it from the other side. No call to give me any card there, much less a second yellow. Pathetic officiating. If memory serves me though, this Panamanian referee has screwed United (it might've been the US nats, but I think it was United) before, Can't remember when, but I remember posting here before that it felt like the ref was deliberately calling the game against the US side (like he had a grudge).

Ridiculous to hear the announcer talking about tactical adjustments. United won't be playing to score. They'll be trying not to embarrass themselves any further. They'll be happy to leave with a 1-0 loss they can blame on Roberto Moreno.

typical concacaf ref, Why shold we expect more. MEXicans and Hondurans have found out the way to win games in these tournaments. Dive and fool the refs they are idiots. Every small touch is a dive and the REF acts like he has never seen a clean tackle. 3 games in a row that I have seen diving..Olympia, atlanta and cruz azul. The thing is, with the REF buying it so much I dont think I know what a dive is anymore.

P.S. I am just afraid the Ref will Give the ball a red card for a late challenge. What are the rules on subbing in a new ball????

Posted by: dc fan | October 21, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

Goff - really, what do players and coaches say off the record about these CIONCACAF refs? Is it ill will or incompetence?

Posted by: Matt | October 21, 2008 11:10 PM | Report abuse

Between this debacle and the EIGHT straight penalties called on the Caps, DC teams are getting quite the run of it from the officials tonight.

We cannot help the injuries this year, we set this team up this year with the commitment to these international tourneys. If the players remain heathy next year this is a dangerous team and the bench will have plenty of experience.

As appalling as that play was, I'm not sure that I entirely blame Cruz Azul. United could have played the ball out, but instead they played it upfield. If United didn't play it out, you can understand why Cruz might not. ON the other hand, United players probably didn't realize that Martinez was still down. Cruz Azul should have seen it. I wonder if their fans are embarrassed by that goal.

You know what's a joke?
1. Red Card on Thorpe
2. Red Card on Crayton
3. Mexican players not playing the ball out when a man is clearly injured and lying there for a while.
4. That damn horn
5. Don Garber putting the salary cap so low that we have no chance at these tournaments when we have a couple of injuries.
6. This tournament taking place during the most important part of the regular season.
7. This tournament overloading our schedule when we do not have the squad size nor the appropriate funds (see #5) to deal with it when we pick up injuries.
8. Your post

Thanks, have a nice day.

When Burch breaks someone's leg or nose in the next game, they should send the medical bills to Roberto Moreno.

Posted by: Fisch Fry | October 22, 2008 12:11 AM | Report abuse

One of the more bizarre games I've ever watched.
1) Second yellow to Thorpe for advancing the ball then kicking it again. Thorpe I'm sure thought he was supposed to kick from the other side of the box so he was moving the ball. Ridiculous yellow, unconscionable second yellow.

2) for the second game in recent memory, United has a player down for a very long time, the opposing team does not kick the ball out (neither does United) and instead they attack goal. At one point, Martinez, on the ground, keeps one of their players onside. Goal scored.

3) Crayton, who had been playing around with time wasting and having a good show of it, dropping to the ground on every ball regardless of whether or not players were approaching, goes ballistic and tells the ref off for not blowing the play dead long ago, resulting in his red. Two reds to United keepers!

4) Insider posters at the start of the game who thought Crayton would play central D at some point in the game, never could have imagined that Kirk would in fact play goal.

5) Cruz Azul is not a good futball team. They were marginally better than us at RFK though they could only win by a ball deflected off an ass.
