Come Monday

Before we get to Jimmy Buffett in concert at the Hong Kong Football Club, a few items to share:

*The MLS discovery period opens today, which means clubs will submit claims on players outside the league (foreigners and USL) who they are hoping to sign. Essentially, it gives them exclusive MLS rights to negotiate with that particular player. If there are multiple claims on a player, the club with the poorer record this past season is awarded the rights. Teams are permitted to make as many as 10 claims, which typically yield just a few actual signings. (In theory, an MLS team could submit a discovery claim on Kaka to secure his MLS rights for this calendar year, but such a move is a waste of time.) Discovery claims are usually kept confidential until a signing is imminent.

*Former D.C. United star Marco Etcheverry has been hired to coach an Ecuadorean club.

*United will announce a new contract for midfielder Clyde Simms today.

*Citing the cost, United declined to purchase forward Francis Doe's contract from the Ghanaian club that had loaned him to MLS. However, United is negotiating to arrange another loan for 2009.

*Despite Latin American media reports indicating that two Argentine clubs are interested in acquiring DCU's Marcelo Gallardo, United has not been approached and, at the moment, expects the oft-injured playmaker to report to training camp Jan. 21.

*Today is the final opportunity to vote in the USSF's "2008 Best of U.S. Soccer" poll for bars, blogs, stores, photos, players, goals and performances.

Okay, Buffett time.
It's 27 in Washington right now.
It will be 72 in Key West.
Enough said.

Come Monday, it'll be alright

I think we need an official theme song for the blog. Changes in Latitudes is my favorite Buffett song, but Fruitcakes might be more appropriate.

A theme song? One that plays when we're on the site? A good way to notify our bosses (those of us who aren't self-employed) that we're not working.

Buena suerte Marco!

Not to mention induce instant vomiting in those of us who aren't Buffett fans...

When did Jimmy Buffet start looking like some kind of bastard offspring of George Carlin and Howard Dean?

I hope DC can seal that Doe loan. We need that element of speed up front, and I think he's going to continue to improve.

So I went to Tampa for that ACC championship showdown. 75, sunny, got out on the golf course.

Then I get back to BWI Saturday night. 34 and light snow.

'nuff said, indeed.

I'm sorry to hear that you were in Tampa.

Buffet? "It's mellow, but not smooth...kinda s***ty."

Yacht Rock on Jimmy Buffet.

When did the number of discovery claims change to 10? Are there any more changes?

Posted by: phlotch | December 8, 2008 3:12 PM | Report abuse

Lots of United rumblings, huh? I assume if Gallardo does move on that DC can sign another DP? The Colorado DP is used on Emilio, no? Would that also be usable, if they sold his contract? Would DC be interested in dealing Gallardo? How long until Milan give up on Sheva?

Felicitaciones al Diablo Etcheverry. First step in a long coaching career? Stops to come -- DC United and Bolivian national team.

I would like to see Doe come back. Financial situation should improve in a year. Perhaps they could negotiate an option to buy on the loan? Might be tempting for the Ghanaian team.

So, what's the best soccer bar?

Two clubs interested in Gallardo? That's the best offseason DCU news I've heard.

Dump him and his ridiculous salary. DCU essentially played without him last season and nearly made the playoffs.

Next season he'll be a year older, a step slower and no less injury prone. Let some Argentinian club take him on. Then go out and find a younger playmaker with a lower paycheck and use some of the money saved to bolster the defense.

Keeping Gallardo is senseless.
