Matchday: Terps-Tar Heels
Greetings again from the House of Pizza in Frisco.
College Cup final: Maryland vs. North Carolina, 1 p.m. ET ESPN2.
Weather: 70 degrees, windy.
Attendance: Weak again. Maybe 3,000 at kickoff? (Of course, the NCAA's "announced" crowd will be larger.) A hundred Terps fans, 75 Tar Heels supporters, MLS scouts, college coaches, youth groups, a couple thousand locals. They can never get the formula right: In warm-weather venues, no one buys tickets; in college soccer areas, the weather is an issue.
Out-of-town newspapers that sent staff reporters: Washington Post, Winston-Salem Journal, UNC and UMD student papers. That's it.

The Terps, winners of 15 straight, are the clear favorites, but the Tar Heels were very good against top-seeded Wake on Friday night and look anything like the team that lost five straight heading into the NCAA tournament.
This is the place for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

College Cup in Frisco Texas... were there any teams from Texas even in the Final 16? Let alone the Final 4?
Makes more sense to me to continue hosting the Cup in Cary since chances are always good that at least 1 mid-atlantic ACC team will be in the Final 4. Crowd for this match won't be too big.

Actually, Texas was not represented in the Initial 48 this year. However, schools such as SMU have been contenders in the past.

Let's go Maryland! I'm not digging the idea of on-field timeouts in college soccer

Thanks to Goff and the Washington Post for covering this tournament. I, for one, would follow college soccer if there was any possible way to do so through the traditional media. As it is, I go to a few Georgetown matches a year and read Goff's reports on Maryland.

With regard to the all-time NCAA Best XI, the PHP announcer must have set some sort of record for mispronouncing names.

That really was an appalling event. Did they want to embarrass everyone selected? How much forethought would it have taken to get the names right?

The "nice" part about this (from MD's perspective) is that no-one is fretting about the number of minutes that the ref will add on.
Did the MD leeper take a dive? It didn't look like a bad collision and he wasn't grabbiing any part of his body.

"keeper" not "leeper" or "leper."

I wonder whether UNC's Kirk Urso is any relation to Frank Urso, the four-time first-team All American in lacrosse in the 1970s at Maryland, of all places.

Steve - thanks for keeping us well-informed of the happenings in Frisco. It's great that the Post has the foresight to invest in live coverage of the College Cup, as several players competing in this year's edition will become decent professional players in North America and Europe.

Goff: Is this the first time you've been in Frisco for this length of time? Do you have any restaurant recommendations?
