Openers Unveiled; Schelotto Stays With Crew

D.C. United will begin the 2009 season on Sun., March 22 against Beckham (probably), Donovan (maybe), Arena (definitely) and the Los Angeles Galaxy at Home Depot Center. Telefutura will carry the match live at 3 p.m. ET. United's home opener is Sat., March 28 against San Jose.

The league schedule opens Thu., March 19 with expansion Seattle hosting MLS Cup runner-up New York on ESPN2.

Other openers (March 21):
Columbus at Houston
Chicago at Dallas
Toronto at Kansas City
Colorado at Chivas USA
New England at San Jose

As we told you last night, Real Salt Lake will have a bye on opening weekend. With 15 teams in MLS next season, someone had to sit out. Also, because of weather concerns, New York, Columbus, Chicago, Toronto, Colorado, New England and DCU will start the season on the road. Only Seattle and K.C. might have issues.

The complete 30-game schedule for every club will be finalized by early February.

Also, confirming an Insider report from late last night, MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto will remain with the Crew. He will become the club's first designated player. The club announced this afternoon that it has exercised the option on his contract. Terms were not disclosed, but the Insider reported two weeks ago that he is scheduled to earn around $650,000 in 2009.

My kids play two games in a day sometimes. Why can't professionals do it?

I hope DC United will have a strong team to beat the Galaxy. Any chance Comcast will air the match as well? Telefutura is ok. And I'm being nice.

If you are going to play at noon in LA, it might as well be in March.

oh how the mighty have fallen...remember last year when the LA-DCU game was the only one on ABC? back in the day? now we don't even get local cable? le sigh. time to price tickets to la la land.

Madrid agree Huntelaar deal
Real Madrid have confirmed Ajax forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar will join the club in January. The 25-year-old Dutchman will sign a contract until 2013 for an initial €20million.

What's wrong with Telefutura? No tape delay. Beats Max Bretos on FSC and his shameless OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH YYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS! any day of the week.
I'll bet comcast does cover the game though. Any chance they send out Russ again so he can call the game? He's my favorite;-)

Also a very good choice for the Thursday night opener. It'll be a sea of rave green Utilikilt wearing chick dudes for all to see. You'll see:-)

Good to also see GBS getting some more money. Sure hope he's got some bonuses laced into that contract.

Maybe it's just me, but it seemed like Comcast SportsNet carried far fewer games this season than past seasons. Not everyone has Fox Soccer Channel. It'd be nice if Comcast showed more DC United games next season.

Good to hear on el mellizo. He deserves that DP money. I wonder if it will be only a 1 year DP deal though?

sorry to bring this into this thread but to me she sounds like someone name Fisher from DC area. The only thing in their lives are to say something negative about soccer related. What more stupid to say soccer is not football. ===============
*Sorry to rain on the Philadelphia/Chester stadium parade that has marched through giddy soccer blogs and Web sites everywhere, but you might want to read this opinion piece in the Philly Inquirer. Some valid points?

any word on dcu transfer targets?

Posted by: HWLongfellow | December 2, 2008 8:18 PM | Report abuse

For those of you out of the C'bus loop (and from the comments, it looks that way).

Schelotto has been making DP money for 2 years, we just had enough allocation $$ to pay it down to the point he "salary" was under the DP number. Hence, he wasn't a DP.

This year, we didn't have enough allocation $$ remaining, so had to actually pay the money on the books and make him a DP.

Though terms weren't released, it be surprised if he's making more than he was before, or if he is, it isn't that much more.

Sorry, BB... my supposed humor sometimes isn't clear. Though I-270 got it, it still wasn't obvious. My bad. (Can someone over 40 use that term?)
