Monday Kickaround

*500 days and counting until South Africa '10!

*D.C. United officials say they will know more this week about midfielder Andrew Jacobson's situation. To recap, Jacobson bolted for Lorient in France last year instead of signing with the MLS club that drafted him, DCU. Foot surgery sidelined him for months and he had been exploring other opportunities in Europe. DCU will retain his MLS rights until the end of this year. Might he add depth to United's midfield? As an unproven pro, is he worth more than, say, $35,000 a year?

*DCU target Walter Martinez scored in Honduras' 4-1 victory over Nicaragua in the UNCAF Nations Cup.

*Former DCU prospect David Hayes, who made a glorious appearance in the Insider's inauguration special last week, was named coach of Atlanta in the W-League. Meantime, ex-DCU midfielder Dane Murphy is on trial in Germany, as is USA forward Kamani Hill.

*Soccer on TV today:
South American U-20s, Bolivia-Paraguay 6 p.m. GolTV
South American U-20s, Brazil-Chile 8 p.m. GolTV
UNCAF Nations Cup, Honduras-El Salvador 8:30 p.m. Galavision

*Buckeye Barometer
(Countdown to the USA-Mexico qualifier Feb. 11 in Columbus)
Today: 19 to 24 degrees, 2-4 inches of snow
Tomorrow: 21 to 25 degrees, snow showers
Wednesday: 18 to 26 degrees, snow possible

The name Dane has always bugged me.

A: As a Silverback fan, I love David Hayes. Dude made the USL Best XI as a defender on a team that gave up the most goals in the league.

B: I love the weather update today.

fyi- Walter 'Peri' Martinez also scored in against Belize, in Honduras 1st game of the UNCAF tournament. Honduras plays last group match against El Salvador today. Peri is making a case to become the 2nd striker on the national team possibly replacing Carlo Costly.

jacobsen should come home, take the 35k and prove himself. He'd be playing in a pretty good midfield, assuming people are healthy, but he'd certainly get some cup games and have a chance to play in the league. He chased the European dream, that's understandable, but time to burnish the resume a bit before trying again.

David Hayes is the Etcheverry of the Silverbacks -- they love him here. It is quite interesting that he has chosen to coach-- rather than continue his career elsewhere -- for a team that won't exist until next year. Another stake in the heart of the Silverbacks men's team?

Significant snow is expected through Ohio overnight tonight. Now if only today's weather can be grafted onto February 11th...

I used to work for a guy named Dane...he was a dick.

I'm hoping cold for Columbus for La Guerra Fria, but not snow. Snow would just complicate things.

Good luck to D. Murphy.(trying not to bug you sitruc)
His mom seemed super stoked I recognized him sitting next to us in the Mezz during that DCU/NJ Dopers 0-0 draw... It sounded like his dad wished he was playing basketball instead. I had him sign my ticket stub, and then Jaime missed his PK... They were trying to get me to drag the my kid to the reserve game the next morning...
I hope he gets to keep living the dream a little bit longer in Germany.
Thanks for the update, uhmmm what up with Benny's ankles?

Aw, joedoc, I was hoping for a "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" reference...

play that against Mexico and they'll be laughing too hard to compete. plus you get the added value of combining U.S & Canadian forces.

I know it might just be rumours, but Leo Astrada, Estudiantes de La Plata head coach, said via Ole that a board member had offered him to bring in Gallardo. He did say the idea is still very green.

Estudiantes already has Veron. Do they just want to sign anyone we offer a DP contract to? Does this mean Emilio will be down there soon?

I played against David Hayes in college. He was one of the fastest players I have ever seen. He was a forward an scored something like 103 goals in two seasons. I am suprised he is hanging it up. He has had a very good career in ATL, and could probably continue it. He is only 32-33.

David Hayes was a USL1 Beast. Excellent player at that level. Hardnosed, tenacious.
I wish him the best in his coaching career.

Greatly appreciated, DadRyan. Thank you.

Snow might complicate things, but with so many US players are going to Scandinavia, it'd give us an added advantage. Right?

By-Tor. I'm a huge early Rush fan, cheese and all, but that song had to be one of their cheesiest. Man, they went downhill after Signals.

$35,000 for Jacobson? Nah. That's more than Burch and McTavish made last year. He needs to prove something here first before we should be willing to offer him any more than a Developmental salary.

Any video of Martinez' goal?
