USA, U-20, DCU Updates

Defenders Clarence Goodson and Cory Gibbs have withdrawn from the national team training camp roster, leaving Coach Bob Bradley with 23 players for the Jan. 24 friendly against Sweden at Home Depot Center. For further details, click here. With Goodson and Gibbs out, should Bradley invite other defenders overlooked on the original roster?

Meantime, following up on last week's Insider report about disciplinary issues at under-20 training camp in Florida, we've learned that, besides former D.C. United midfielder Bryan Arguez, the players dismissed were Gabriel Hoyos (Freiburg), Vincenzo Bernardo (Napoli) and Guiseppe Nazzani (Bologna). All will remain under consideration for future camps.

D.C. United midfielder Ivan Guerrero has been called into Honduran national team camp in Miami in preparation for the UNCAF Nations Cup, which will be held in Tegucigalpa Jan. 22 through Feb. 1.

Well, it sounds like Goodson's got an excuse. But no details on the Gibbs departure? Personal reasons you might infer?

I give Rongen some credit for trying to maintain some discipline at the U-20 training camp and also for casting a wide net for players, all the way to Italy with Nazzani, who apparently has only lived in the US briefly and doesn't speak English. I hope that the four dismissed players can learn from the experience.

Defenders? We don't need no stinkin' defenders.

Goff, you're killing me. Getting me all excited. Ivan being called into national team duty barely meets the requirement for a DCU update.

I worry that Rongen is going to find himself on the hot seat if any of these kids turn out to be the next Subotic.

If any of these kids turn out to be great players, maybe they will have done so due to the lessons they learned from Rongen.

Each of these kids plays at a professional club. If they can't behave like professionals, then they have no right to represent any national team.

Hope Goodson heals quickly.
