Wednesday Kickaround

*The complete MLS schedule will be released around 12:30 p.m. ET today. Check the league's Web site or just stay here with the Insider for information and a link.

*Not that he's expected to return to D.C. United, but free agent defender Gonzalo Martinez has received offers in Colombia, I'm told. There's also an outside chance that he would agree to a new MLS contract and be traded by United, but at last check, no clubs were prepared to make a firm trade or contract offer.

*Weeks after it was agreed upon, DCU defender Devon McTavish's new contract has been rubber-stamped by the league. A formal announcement will be made today.

*Soccer on TV today:
England, Wigan-Liverpool 2:30 p.m. Fox Soccer Channel
England, Everton-Arsenal 3 p.m. Setanta
Spain Copa del Rey, Barcelona-Espanyol 3 p.m. GolTV
England, Manchester City-Newcastle 5 p.m. FSC

DCU first-round draft pick Rodney Wallace will appear on Comcast SportsNet's "Washington Post Live" between 5 and 6 p.m. tonight. On Thursday, I will join Ben Olsen and DCU radio voice Tony Limarzi in the studio for a soccer roundtable.

To Tim Howard - I hate it when American's lose, especially when you mind the nets, but c'mon you Gunners - we need 3 points today.

Maybe you should sit down with Kevin Payne and ask him how the hell he thinks DCU is going to compete in this league this season. Ask him why they keep picking up forwards and not any center backs. Ask him if this team is throwing in the towel before the season even begins. Ask him who and what they are going to blame it on this year.

From a very frustrated fan!

What other forwards beside Chris Pontius has DC picked up in the offseason? We have Roger, Veris on trial as CBs and we picked up Wallace in the SD.

Gallardo back to River according today's release -- but we all know South American papers can be deceiving...

Regarding the Buckeye Barometer: don't forget the 2" of ice we got overnight which fell on top of the 2" of snow we already had and is now underneath our current 4" to 8" of snow (and still falling).

Any news on Comcast's coverage of DCU this season would be nice too.

For what it's worth, the Clarin article Anthony linked to does include some newsworthy material (scroll up to his post for the link).

The article says Gallardo is on the verge of signing with his old club RIVER PLATE, not Estudiantes as has been mentioned. But River's courtship was accelerated by Estudiantes' reported interest. The article says Gallardo is a step from signing with River. That step is a medical evaluation so it's pretty important.

One of River's directors (Rodolfo Cuina) told a radio station that Gallardo's reps (Juan Berros?) have met w River's people. He says Gallardo would be acquired on a 1-year loan.

Gallardo would not be expected to be available til late February as he recovers from his December surgery.

River's coach Nestor Gorosito has not made acquiring Gallardo a priority as he would have preferred Cristian Fabbiani who seems likely to play for Newell's. But River Plate's directors seemed to want Gallardo, particularly since Fabbiani seems like an unlikely acquisition.

Mexico - Sweden tonite at 10pm on Telemundo is missing.
Good chance to scout a lot of new starters who will replace injured and suspended players for the US qualifier.
