Gallardo vs. Red Bulls

Marcelo Gallardo, the $1.9 million bust who returned to Argentina after one injury-shortened season with D.C. United, is scheduled to play for the River Plate reserves tomorrow morning against the touring New York Red Bulls. See a Gallardo photo and read about it (in Spanish).

I hope Gallardo humiliates them.

We can make this thread a live discussion and analysis of Steve's appearance on WP live @ 5pm.

No offense to Gallardo, but I'd love to see Petke "Send him to the hospital"(not seriously of course) in a rough tackle.

But that's just me...

"At this meeting, given Nestor Gorosito shooting several footballers who are not playing with continuity."

Here we just cut them from the roster.

From the translation:

"At this meeting, given Nestor Gorosito shooting several footballers who are not playing with continuity"

Now that's providing some motivation to the slackers! Maybe Tommy S. needs fewer diagrams and more ammunition.

Who's Gallardo?

hey y'all. just back from bayern-sporting. wanted to post from the game but for some reason the blackberry version wouldn't allow me to sign in. ah well, I'll try to fix that before the algarve cup.

anyway, showed up to electric atmosphere. was sitting seventh row, next to the corner with the drums and giant flags. first disappointment of the night came as i realized no skinny bald guys were warming up. yep, donovan didn't make the 18.

sporting hung right in throughout the first half, outshooting bayern 9-5, even if most of those 9 shots were silly attempts with no chance of success. sure enough, late in the half, they let their guard down and ribery makes a beautiful solo run for a great goal.

second half pretty much all goes bayern's way, leading to the second disappointment. sporting gave up mentally after the secong goal; shoulders slumped and heads down across the team. interesting point that Toni was clearly having knee trouble. it buckled under him twice and he couldn't make cuts, yet they didn't sub him out. he was his typical petulant self, though, so I vowed to hate him forever. sure enough, late in the game when bayern was just pouring it on, he got two garbage goals. 5-0 finish and they still have to play the second leg in munich. how much fun you think that trip will be?

and heather mitts is in country but not at the match. disappointment number three and time to call it a night.

going to visit with the wnt on friday. that should help raise my spirits.

Ah, I remember Troy in Lisbon...been a while since we've had a Lisbon update from you. I guess with no Freddy...

"de la MLS de Estados Unidos"

And the Spanish press can't get it right, either -- it should be "de MLS de Estados Unidos"! :)

DadRyan: Good question.

25 days till United's first match

Posted by: Curious99 | February 25, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Curious, just don't want you to miss the fact that United will be "playing" in Maryland on Sunday... Also playing RSL on the 7th of March, Toronto on Wednesday the 11th and finally Charleston Battery on Saturday the 14th... All in Charleston....
What sucks about their first home match is it's interference with the US playing in El Salvador... What's up with that?

NY 2 - 1 River Plate

No big deal, it's just a friendly, but considering all the schadenfreude in Insider Nation when a bunch of players who never had any chance to make the squad lost to a US youth team, it's worth noting here. Angel, by the way, dnp.

NY goals: Richards 3', Boyens 73'
River Plate goals: Edwards own goal 33'

El Muneco mentions on the RBNY blog:

15th minute - Gallardo on a direct kick from 30 yards out on the right side sails through the box over everyone.

33rd Gallardo gets ball on the rush and sends it wide left, into corner, and Sambueza runs it down and sends across the middle. Aklie Edwards, being shadowed by a River player, slides to clear, but sends it into the Red Bulls net for an own goal. Red Bulls 1, River Plate 1

40th - River’s Gallardo gathers ball in the midfield and feathers a pass through the Red Bulls defense to Fernadez, but just offsides.

53rd, Gallardo direct kick from 25 yards out, but he drives it into the Red Bull wall.

87th - Gallardo gets a direct kick from 20 yards out and his shot sails over the wall and just misses right poist.

92nd - Some pushing and shoving as Mbuta and Gallardo go up for a ball and Mbuta’s elbow catches Gallardo. And, that’s the game. Red Bulls 2, River Plate 1.
