Greetings From Largo

D.C. United executive chairman Victor MacFarlane and team president Kevin Payne are here to discuss a potential new stadium in Prince George's County, Maryland. The county executive Jack Johnson as well as the county council chairwoman, a delegate and state senator are here. Several players -- captain Jaime Moreno with a new corn-row hairstyle, Marc Burch, Fred and Ben Olsen -- are in attendance as well. Sasho Cirovski, coach of the NCAA champion Maryland Terrapins, just arrived. Yes, some Terps matches and the ACC tournament could end up being played at a new stadium.

I will have more for you when the event gets going.....

I still do not understand how DCU getting a stadium is a bad thing! I live in Howard County and would not complain about driving to NOVA to support the team once every other week for six months or so.

Either you are fan and you support the team or you are not.

I like involving UMd - good stuff. I think MacFarlane is just going to plan as many events as possible in the first year - and shove every single one of them up the a$$es of Fenty, Fisher and Nakamura.

ACC tourney? How about the NCAAs? The NCAA final? As for the College Parkers -- Purple Line would be great if the site were New Carrolton. If it's not, I wonder if the team/college might come up with regular charter buses? The college students could be a great addition to the fan base.

Posted by: koolcaio | February 16, 2009 12:08 PM | Report abuse

"Prince George's United"?? That might be a dealbreaker...

Posted by: fischy | February 16, 2009 12:08 PM | Report abuse

Is everyone in Prince Georges County giving a speech?

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 16, 2009 12:08 PM | Report abuse

Goffinho, got a guess on how possible it is that the team changes it's name to Prince George United? The delegate and one of the city councilpersons have both hinted at that.

I think that is the only thing about this proposal that would sour it for me.

DC United in DC is the best possible scenario - but if the stadium is only a couple metro stops passed Stadium Armory than sounds good to me - does anyone know if the stadium is as close to the metro stop as rfk currently is from stadium armory? if so that would be best. if not, stadiums out in the burbs are terrible for the fans, the league and ultimately the players. there is nothing better than a stadium in the middle of the city

Posted by: GraciasRiquelme | February 16, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

The Councilman who just spoke (a portion in Spanish) - Campos, was it? He was great - big asset there.

Posted by: Kev29 | February 16, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

Not likely. No-one outside of our area knows where Prince George's Co. is, so it hurts "branding." E.g. National Harbor is not called Prince George's Harbor.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 16, 2009 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Please note the amount of laughter surrounding mentions of name changing.

Posted by: Kev29 | February 16, 2009 12:17 PM | Report abuse

Blonde lady is asking a 65 part question.

PG United is right out. However, I think that's just typical political-figure-at-press-conference nonsense. Payne just said "There's only one DC United". Suggestion of changing the name was just laughed off. I wouldn't worry about it.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | February 16, 2009 12:18 PM | Report abuse

It's a shame the first reporter muddled her excellent early questions with too many follow-ups. We didn't get an answer to where the possible locations lie.

Posted by: Kev29 | February 16, 2009 12:21 PM | Report abuse

This is amazing. Two weeks ago, nothing, today I feel like we'll be seeing ground broken as soon as the weather warms up.

Posted by: doh1 | February 16, 2009 12:22 PM | Report abuse

GarciasRiquelme:

No one knows where the exact sites are, so there's no way to know the walking distance.

I will say that, while PG County isn't 100% urban, it's hardly the situation you have in Frisco or Bridgeview. We're not talking about a stadium in the middle of a field. PG is fairly dense, and they want to put up some developments around the stadium.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | February 16, 2009 12:23 PM | Report abuse

I'd be really surprised if MacFarlane/Chang/Payne didn't have their #1 spot in mind already. These 7 locations could just be part of the negotiations with PG. Just speculating on my part.

No "sea of parking"? What about tailgaters?

Posted by: fischy | February 16, 2009 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BarraLoco | February 16, 2009 12:40 PM | Report abuse

That was a little crazy with people who have no media tie asking questions. They just have an axe to grind/project to promote and should be told they can ask their questions 1-on-1 later. Too much grandstanding.

Posted by: beach3 | February 16, 2009 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else get the borderline hostility from the PG Gazette? Nice to see Payne step forward and clarify things a bit.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | February 16, 2009 12:42 PM | Report abuse

It's a good gesture to allow one or two questions/rants from the public and answer them diplomatically, but Doug Hicks should have been more forceful in ending the Q&A session.

They will need some parking for tailgaters, pre-games festivities, etc. but it won't be much. My guess is that it will be cheaper to park at the nearest Metro lot and ride the train in.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 16, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

Let's see:
Carson Galaxy
Chivas Carson USA
FC Frisco
Not to mention the Landover Bullets, Landover Capitals and Landover Redskins.

None of these name changes happened. Why would our situation be any different.

Posted by: M__N | February 16, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

If they build between Morgan Blvd and FedEx - then perhaps tailgaters can use some of the football stadium parking (hopefully not at Snyder's rate though)

Posted by: Kev29 | February 16, 2009 12:56 PM | Report abuse

Wow, I am excited. Great to see the stream. I've been waking to RFK for years and driving when I tailgate...if I can hop off a metro and walk to this new site, I'll take it. I think the first renderings of the stadium will get everyone focused...and when ground is broken all of this worry will fall away, then it'll be a countdown to the best stadium in MLS (which it had better be).

Exactly. Besides, every time they hear DC United, Fenty, DC counsels, Fisher and Nakamura's a...hole burns. They will continue to have nigthmares cause they couldn't get rid of DC United.

Posted by: DCUnitedFootball | February 16, 2009 1:05 PM | Report abuse

Not a whole lot of new information from this press conference. The point was to demonstrate political support from key county officials. This is a good thing. DCU will need to continue to leverage that support to get this done. I wish there had been more info about potential sites etc. That will come out in the next few weeks. This is great news for DCU. The team and its fans deserve a better venue. RFK is a historic relic, which at this point serves nobody's interest. At least the DC stadium authority has given additional revenue stream to the club on parking and consessions. I wonder if that means the club will try to improve both services. Oh, by the way parking is $15 this year.

I just hope it's close to Metro and has a proper roof. Would prefer New Carrollton over Largo - but hey, beggars can't be choosers.
