48 days to United's first game!

Since I'm not going to be in Columbus myself, I think a nice 35-degree rain would be the PERFECT weather to punish Mexico with.

Since college basketball is not holding my attention these days - I spent the weekend checking out some action from The Primera in Mexico.

I'm thoroughly convinced that MLS needs to spend some DP money on players there or at least devote some serious pursuit of talent in the area. I'm not convinced that some of those players could not be tempted to earn a GOOD salary in any US city versus some of the smaller Mexican markets.

However, I'm ready for the Columbus Crushing (insert Borat - "We will crush them") of La Seleccion and the subsequent dismissal of IT (Shut up, Sven).

Nery is back with Shaktar?

BTW, no major transfers? Jozy the only American to move?

Ohhhhh Riquelme... (I think that's how you spell it).

Do they have the field heated or under a tarp or anything?

First rough forecast for Columbus on the 11th, doesn't look too bad but a lot could change...

http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USOH0212?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared

Wed Feb 11
Few Showers (10% chance)
High 44°
Low 31°

Posted by: Kev29 | February 2, 2009 9:52 AM | Report abuse

RK: who else were you expecting to move?

and the English FA has asked for an extension of the deadline due to inclement weather this weekend making things like physicals and meetings difficult. so maybe something else might pass, but I doubt it. there are a lot of sellers this january, but not a lot of buyers to be had.

I don't like the rain in the forecast. It makes the game unpredictable. Cold weather is what we need, just cold. The deep, deep cold that makes salting the roads useless; that makes you plug in your non-electric vehicle; that freezes the LCD displays on your car radio.

Oh how I don't miss the Minneapolis winter.

How about some good news about DC United? There has been a lot bad news lately for the team.

Pretty interesting that Joe the Plumber now coaches Boca Juniors...

McBride going back to Fulham?? Looks like that long shot isn't going to come through and he'll be starting the season with Chicago.

JacobfromAtlanta-ish: that game was part of the Summer Tournament, I believe. February is South America's August/September.

Posted by: bigbadbri | February 2, 2009 10:02 AM | Report abuse

fedster:

The Honduran press has us linked to yet another Honduran Olympic team member (this time, it's 19 year old left winger Mario Martinez, currently with Real Espana). I believe that now means we've been linked to their entire squad, bar overage players.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Mart%C3%ADnez_(Honduran_footballer)

I don't know if that's actual good news, since the other Honduran press links have been either inaccurate or deals that never worked out. It's something, though.

On the flipside it looks like Gallardo will have a confidant in hair care with his new coach... Ahhh glory be the hair farms of Argentina!

From Sporting Life...

AMERICAN STRIKER SIGNS WHITES DEAL

Leeds United have completed the signing of American striker Mike Grella who has signed an 18-month contract at Elland Road.
The 22-year-old made an immediate impact while on trial with Leeds, scoring a hat-trick against Barnsley during his first reserve-team appearance.

Grella, who has represented the USA at Under-18s and Under-20s level, turned down the option of linking up with former Leeds coach John Carver at Toronto and has been monitored by a host of Championship clubs.

Deadline day is fun...

3:51 (UK): Sky Sports News understands that Charlton have made a bid for Watford's Jay DeMerit.

Posted by: Kev29 | February 2, 2009 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Actually, the low on the 11th will be 26 deg F. AND rain is only expected during the day, NOT at night:

Yeah, deadline extended in London because of snow. Sounds like a DC panic. I wonder if the bread, milk, and toilet paper is gone from the shelves?

Ha! Well it is extremely rare for the south of England to get measurable snow these days. I'm not surprised at all that they're snowed in.

:-)

Did they close the schools? If so, what did the flinty, tough Scotsman* say about that?

*Gordon Brown, not Alex Ferguson

Nicaragua?

Any news on Gomez? I know there was a rumor that he flew into DC on Friday. Is he training with them today?

Posted by: dculuva | February 2, 2009 12:02 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for clarifying your referene to the "flinty, tough Scotsman". I thought you were referring to the one who said:

"She canna huld up much longa keptin!!!!"

Posted by: Ron16 | February 2, 2009 12:19 PM | Report abuse

Saw a game in Charlton about 10 years ago, and loved it. Great atmosphere.

Did someone say "Panama"?!

"Jump back, what's that sound?
Here she comes, full blast'n top down
Hot shoe, burnin' down the avenue
Model citizen, zero discipline..."

Any suggestions on where to watch next week's US-Mexico game, in DC? I figured Mexican bars like Guapo's in Tenleytown or Alero in Cleveland Park would show it. Any thoughts?

Posted by: yamster | February 2, 2009 12:48 PM | Report abuse

I hope Demerit does not move to Charlton. The Addicks are going down to League 1 this season, plus he'd miss out on the FA Cup game against Chelsea.

Well done to Grella too, but he maybe stuck in L1 next year too if Leeds can't get into the playoffs.

When I went home for lunch, Setanta said that Arshavin passed a medical for Arsenal and they'd agreed to terms, but there's a hitch in the fee to Xenit. For what it's worth.

How low are the Chapines feeling if they lost a one-off to baseball-loving country of Nicaragua for the last Gold Cup spot?

So much for the new "qualifying" format for UNCAF being a formality...

Posted by: EricB1 | February 2, 2009 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Is it me or has Clint Dempsey been playing great this season for Fulham? Almost every time he touches the ball he's making good decisions. If he and Donovan are on top of there game against Mexico, we're going to do well.

Any updates on parties in Columbus for those of us who got tix and are coming from out of town?
