United Wins, 2-1

In its second preseason match, D.C. United defeats the MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew, 2-1, in Bradenton, Fla.

Luciano Emilio heads in Mike Zaher's cross in the 23rd minute, but the Crew ties it early in the second half when, according to team observers, rookie keeper Milos Kocic places down the ball on what he thought was an offside call. It was not, and Jason Garey shoots into an open net. DCU rookie Chris Pontius breaks the tie from 18 yards in the 70th minute.

GK: Thorpe (Kocic 46th minute)
Ds: Namoff (Miller 65th), Janicki (Mediate 46th), McTavish, Zaher (Wallace 46th).
MFs: Quaranta (Khumalo 46th), Jacobson (Vide 38th), Simms (Atieno 66th), Wallace (Barklage 46th).
Fs: Emilio (Doe 46th), N'Silu (Pontius 46th).

Fred, Moreno, Veris and Burch sat out. Gomez won't join the club until late in the week. Crayton is in Liberia for personal reasons.

FYI, Real Maryland (USL2) has signed forward Sal Caccavale (American University/Red Bulls) and midfielder Mike Marchiano, who helped Maryland win the NCAA championship in December.

Goff, Question.

With a DP slot gone back to Colorado, is Emilio still being paid DP money with essentially OUR DP spot, or did he revert back to his original salary(as i think it was mentioned he was only getting that money til' the end of the season to get him scoring again), and we still have a DP slot open?

And any idea if we are still trying to get veron? I remember reading about the rumors of Gallardo to estudiantes, and the newspaper speculated that at the end of the argentine season veron will come to DC. I mean it probably just is speculation, but do you think there's any truth to that?

Mr. Goff,
I know Hey-dude and Rogers are with the national team, but did we win over the Columbus C-team or...? Just curious since I had not seen a Columbus lineup yet. Thanks.

So not only did we beat them but we should have shut them out? Thats all well and good, but a couple of things that concern me is: Jacobson's hamstring, thats 2 games in a row he has left early after tweaking it, and why do we keep putting Dom at CB? That will increase his headers and give him another potential concussion, its too risky. Also, the USL-1 import Atieno has yet to play a game up top, instead logging all his minutes as an attacking midfielder...

Emilio, Zaher, Pontius -- good! Kocic -- not so good. Two brain farts in two games.

Poor Jason. All those years tearing up the NCAA. Too bad he doesn't seem to be able to hack it in MLS.

United has one DP slot and it's being filled by Emilio. If DCU feels the need to sign another high-priced player, it will have to trade for another DP slot.

Seems to me we are well on our way to the playoffs....

Does this move Pontius ahead of Cooper in the National team depth? What does Bradley say about his goal?

Heh, I see why they picked up the insurance goalie in the Gomez trade.

Goff, are we seeing any risk that Crayton might not come back? What a disaster that would be.

A week or two ago, Goff (I think) posted some comments from Mediate that it was possible that his head problems were related to TMJ, not concussions.

Did you say Party Boy with the Game winner? Sick!

Goff - one more question on Gomez - your last thread says there is an option for 2010. Do we know if Colorado has agreed to pick up part of his cap hit if the option is exercised?

"Are we seeing any risk that Crayton might not come back?"

Do you ask this because DC United is doing it's best to reverse all personnel decisions made in 2008?

Carvallo --> Released
Wells --> Retiring

Peralta --> on Loan
Martinez --> Not on Roster

Gallardo --> Released

Niell --> Released

@TCompton -- that's a very incomplete list. Doesn't even have Guerrero. Also, no Thompson, Cordeiro, or that African guy who didn't come back.

On the other hand, there are a few others who are here still: Zaher, Thorpe and Miller

Crayton left because his mother died. He is expected back soon.

Not sure if Colorado would inherit part of Gomez's contract in 2010.

so is it OK to get excited about the Chris Pontius era? the Twitter feed mentioned another scoring chance from him that just went over the bar. maybe DCU will start to see some quick return on its draft picks and start to shift strategy away from so many foreign acquisitions that have been very hit-and-miss? the draft can be equally hit-and-miss (maybe moreso), so i'm not talking about abandoning foreign signings altogether.

i'm looking forward to hearing more about the development of Wallace, Pontius, Kocic, etc. maybe Adams will even come back. as for Kocic's slip-ups, he's young and learning. for some reason i have a good feeling about him. not that that means anything, but i hope it bears out.

unfortunately, i just saw this on Pontius' UCSB profile page - "Roots for Manchester United" - booooooooooooooooooooooo!

Good grief -- Is Kocic channeling Wells' hands or something?

Shawn Mitchell should have something soon at the C-Bus Dispatch Crew Blog. Right after the Brazil-Italy game, I'm sure...

There's also the fact that Mediate just isn't a center back, but Soehn has gone for this experiment many times. It's bizarre, to say the least.

I think Atieno did play up front. Having seen him play in the CCL, he doesn't have the technical ability to play as a midfielder. I would guess that, with that sub, Pontius moved to the left and Barklage moved inside. Since Pontius is supposed to be able to play both positions, and Barklage is said to be a scrapper, that would make more sense than Atieno just coming in in the middle.

I think you and I are the only people here that a) get the Party Boy reference and b) are not too mature/stodgy to enjoy it. Personally, I don't see any way to avoid referring to him as Party Boy.

Believe me you're not, I'm just avoiding it in the hope that this year's male nudity by our devoted fanbase stays dialed down.

Chest_Rockwell: I'm obviously right there with you. I'm sure you may know people that might not be the most ravenous DCU fans,but if you mentioned that the club had just signed Chris Pontius they'd be all,"WTF?!?"... I was trying to picture myself running around RFK with a customized PARTY BOY jersey and a banana hammock... Underneath some breakaways of course;-)

Woo! So this means *we're* the champions now, right?

Posted by: spidergoose | February 10, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

40 days to the first United match!

Posted by: Curious99 | February 10, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Hey, I got the reference too.

...What do you mean I don't count?

Posted by: B_A_ | February 10, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I see ya there B.A.... When you got cats like Darth Hooligan running around RFK, would a whole posse of Party Boys be that out of control? I can see it on the Sports Bog now... ;-)

I thought Thorpe looked good in goal with a couple nice saves.

Sorry for going off topic, but I wanted to officially Boo the Gomez trade. Dumb acquisition, horrendous trade terms. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Who ever pushed this deal I would like to meet in a dark alley and share some specific thoughts on how much they suck. I may have to find a new MLS team, due to the shear stupidity of player decisions over 12 months. They were probably lobbying for Bush to get four more years as well.
