So much for loyalty Bobby?

Thankfully, this blog will now be free of the aimless questions about Convey...

Does Harkesy have the do-re-mi to save an English club? Would this mean a move back to Sheffield? Or would he be an owner-in-absentia, continuing to build his management/coaching chops in the MLS?

Posted by: fischy | February 4, 2009 1:05 AM | Report abuse

He has no choice in the matter. San Jose was ahead of us in the allocation order.

That, and Convey has hardly been impressive in the last 2-3 years.

He had 1 good year at Reading, but that's it.
He's an attacking winger that isn't much of a threat to actually score.

well that's at least one less entry for NotInThe18.com. now if we could just get some of those other boys back over here where they might actually play once in a while...

and he's still only 25 and is still one of the youngest players to ever make the MNT, chosen by Arena so i think it's safe to say that he still has the potential to be quite good (insert injury caveat here). his recent quotes make it seem like he might be motivated to quiet some of the naysayers.

i don't know much about Cam Weaver - the other Earthquakes signing mentioned in the article - but his stats show some goal-scoring potential. with a full season of Huckerby and solid showings by Convey and Weaver, San Jose could be much improved and maybe even the best team in California.

Posted by: dimesmakedollars | February 4, 2009 1:53 AM | Report abuse

I wonder if Yallop will move Huckerby to the right, or leave him on the left and play Convey in the middle. They'd probably be better off with the former. That would free up Alvarez to play as the withdrawn forward, while also allowing them to slot in a more defensive central player to help out Corrales (who was not very impressive for most of last year). Playing Convey centrally would expose him to more physical play, and would leave Alvarez on the right (meaning that their forwards are all physical, aggressive types with modest skill with the ball).

At this point, I don't see them being much better than last year. They have made some improvements (Weaver might turn out to be good) and replaced some losses (O'Brien's departure opens the door for Convey, who should still be able to do the job when healthy), but they've lost a lot of key players. Losing Riley means they're starting Cochrane with Hernandez at right back, and Lima's replacement will be either a rookie (Ring) or a guy who's never cut it as a starter (Grabavoy). Denton is still first choice as well. Laying it all out like this, I think they might actually be worse.

Best Team in California?

Is that like winning Miss Congeniality?

New plans for the old VA Beach Mariners USL stadium - looks like an indoor field house along the lines of the one in Fredericksburg plus some new outdoor turf fields: http://hamptonroads.com/2009/02/virginia-beach-sportsplex-income-may-sink-42-percent

Chest:

while I regret my Reading Convey jersey is now a relic (not to mention will never pass the gates of RFK again) if Yallop puts Bobby in the middle he's a fool. He has never shown the vision or control to make that a meaningful position for him, not to mention his knees probably won't take the punishment dealt out by MLS midfields. Keep him on the wing where he can outrun people and avoid the worst of the carnage.

good luck, BC, I hope you can recover your form and enjoy a few more years in the sun.

Pedala-Thanks for the info about the Soccerplex. I still miss going there when the Islanders came to town and the cool people down there...

Dimes, keep an eye out for Weaver.

That kid was a sick rookie when he played for the Sounders back in '06. They got a really nice (for a USL club) transfer fee for him went he went to Norway.

He could end up being their best "discovery" yet. Who knows, some day that kid might get capped or at least invited to camp by Bradley.

Possibly only one doubleheader? The Freedom organization had previously made it sound like there were going to be at least two...

Posted by: yankiboy | February 4, 2009 8:34 AM | Report abuse

I wonder if he still has a key to KPs basement.

Posted by: dsheon | February 4, 2009 8:44 AM | Report abuse

Wow! Has it been 10 years since Bobby 's rookie season? I wish Bobby well - although I hope he scores an own goal when SJ plays DC.

I guess I'm a little surprised that Harkes, who was not a big star in England and played in the salary-capped MLS, could afford to invest in Wednesday. For his comes to come up, it can't be a small share, can it?

WPS site says Freedom will host Chicago (carli lloyd, tarpley) at SoccerPlex on April 11 time TBD. DCU is in Utah that day.

Posted by: OWNTF | February 4, 2009 9:08 AM | Report abuse

Cam Weaver was a good player on a bad team in a weak league. He's done nothing to date to lead anyone to think he will have a big impact in SJ.
Convey has a lot to do to convince anyone he's going to be that player he used to be. One wonders if Arena didn't drag him along when he didn't deserve to be on the Nat's if he ever would have made it to Europe. This is very much a 'wait see' signing.

Posted by: euroman | February 4, 2009 9:12 AM | Report abuse

One doubleheader for the Freedom and United? They have announced on several occasions that there would be at least 3 doubleheaders. That kind of sucks! I was looking forward to those games.

Posted by: dculuva | February 4, 2009 9:14 AM | Report abuse

yankiboy beat me to it. I thought we had originally heard there would be at least two.

Posted by: sitruc | February 4, 2009 9:14 AM | Report abuse

Sadly if there are 2 fewer doubleheaders, there are 2 fewer Freedom games with beer . . . . . .

Here's my question to MLS brass - as an LLC and seemingly with "shares" for sale - why do they allow all of this capital to flow out of America and into other clubs around the world?

Would it be possible to have a non-ownership share class? One that you could tout to guys like Harkes and Tab Ramos and other players. Allow them to make an investment in the game that they worked their rears off to get started following the demise of the NASL. And also, to pitch to the foreign clubs who seek to create "partnerships" or to the guys who live and work in America, but own abroad - Randy Lerner, the group that bought Derby County, etc.

I'm sure someone will explain to me that this in not a great idea and that the league is fine w/o it - however, I would just rather see some of these guys get a chance to earn a return off the growth and development of MLS rather than the promotion hopes of clubs that are a good 20 years behind the top 2/3 of the Premiership...

I wrote that DCU and Freedom would have "at least" one doubleheader. That means there could be more, depending on logistics and scheduling. We'll see what they announce.

Goff: What is the status of the project to expand the seating capacity of the Soccerplex?

Posted by: universityandpark | February 4, 2009 10:34 AM | Report abuse

I'm not Goff, but I go there each Saturday. There has been no groundbreaking, no grass clearing, and no space making of any kind.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 4, 2009 10:44 AM | Report abuse

From earlier press accounts --
"Work on the project must begin right after Thanksgiving and continue through the winter to be completed by opening day, Heffelfinger said. The project requires a storm water management permit for the bleachers, a building permit for the restrooms and a permit from the Parks Department to proceed, she said. Time is of the essence in gaining the approvals, she said.

If the work is not finished by April, the foundation plans to use temporary bleacher seats to meet the league's requirement, she said. MSF's lease allows stadium seating to reach 7,500."

Sounds like temprorary bleachers are in store . . . .

Thanks to Dad for the behindthebadge link. Seems Kocic is in camp. That hasn't been reported here. I guess it's definitive, though, if it's from behindthebadge....There should be some interesting competition for roster spots at each position.

Posted by: fischy | February 4, 2009 11:06 AM | Report abuse

From what I read in the Gazette last year, I was under the impression that the SoccerPlex expansion was shovel-ready. I guess only shoveling is to move the paperwork around.

Restrooms should have the highest priority.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 4, 2009 11:15 AM | Report abuse

I think they need county approval, and as I understand it the county gets nada zilch in revenue from Freedom, so that might be a problem in this day and age. DC United should have such a deal.

on the other hand, they did remove the walls for indoor soccer this year, which is a big plus

Posted by: OWNTF | February 4, 2009 11:28 AM | Report abuse

Kocic has been in camp since Day 1. (You don't have to be under contract to start workouts.)

I didn't say it was a good prize, but it beats the heck out of last place. And at the very least they should be more exciting to watch and should average more than 1 goal per game this year. and their Goals Allowed last year was pretty good and they had 9 clean sheets (if i'm counting right) - more than anyone except Columbus and Houston. so they might be able to absorb a little bit of regression on the defensive end.

Setanta pre-match analyst just said that Tim Howard will be Everton's weakness tonight v Liverpool. And that he's "not up to the task in big matches"

Would love to see Tim shut that guy's trap and keep Liverpool scoreless tonight.
