Americans Abroad

Before we get to the USA players, let's take a look at the result for a certain German club that, until a few days ago, had a certain American forward on the squad:

Bayern Munich 7, Sporting Lisbon 1

That is not an aggregate score, just today's Champions League result. (The two-game total was 12-1.)

As for the Americans in England.....

F Eddie Johnson 90 minutes in Cardiff City's 2-0 loss at Norwich City
D Frank Simek in 18 but didn't play in Sheffield Wednesday's 1-1 tie at Preston North End

D Jay DeMerit not in the 18 for Watford's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest
GK Marcus Hahnemann in 18 but didn't play in Reading's 2-2 tie with Charlton Athletic

F Jemal Johnson 9 minutes in MK Dons' 1-1 tie with Huddersfield Town
F Mike Grella 18 minutes in Leeds' 4-0 win over Yeovil Town

It's a miracle the Sporting Lisbon manager hasn't been fired yet...

What's up with Hahnemann? IIrc, he refused to sign a new contract. Keller backup in Seattle? New Harley repair show on A&E? Full time Slipknot groupie?

I thought Hahnemann originally went out with injury. As he is not under contract for next year, Reading may have moved on in his health related absence. They had been bringing Federici along, it may now be his turn. Marcus had drawn alleged interest from Spurs prior to injury.

I doubt the Sporting manager will be fired for these results. I haven't been following the league but if he's doing bad there then he will get the boot.

BN: Riquelme quits the Argentine National squad.

Wow, Eddie Johnson is finally getting play. Thought he might get loaned out to Fisher Athletic next if he didn't start getting playing time...

Well, this took 10 seconds...SL is in 3rd, 4 pts behind first.

I was surprised to see a rather good squad put out by BM; not many players rested.

was wondering why DeMerit hadn't been in the 18 lately, seems he is injured, per the Watford website (a tight calf muscle in the Crystal Palace win). He's doubtful for the Sheffield Wednesday tilt.

Not very Sporting of Bayern.

and Sporting has actually been playing well recently, except for these CL matches. They utterly deconstructed and humiliated Benfica three days before the first CL leg and they won their other league match just three days before the second leg. They are also in the League Cup final on March 22. I went to the 5-0 thrashing in the first leg but sure didn't think the second leg would be worse.

Although the coach seems safe, Sporting has been without a President for a few months and the organization of the club is in disarray. That shouldn't affect what happens on the pitch though...
