If Adu doesn't play soon, I'm going to lose it. If anyone still thinks he has his head screwed on wrong, read this.

http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/28/freddy-adu-speaks-out/

As for Gooch not playing, I definetly think Demerit is our man.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Agreed united Demon - Dermerit over Califf any day. I would have put in Spector and Hahnemann as well.

These guys will get through qualifiers but will be a sorry excuse for a team in World Cup Play.

Posted by: Beckster1 | March 28, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

I really hope that starting Califf does not come back to bite this team in the A**. Califf is not a quality defender.

Posted by: no_recess | March 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Plus, isn't he Just coming back from injury?

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

yep...they said he hadn't played in 2 months

Posted by: Beckster1 | March 28, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Wow. I think the "Let's only field defensive players" mantra is backfiring Big.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

WOW!!! The team looks horrible. Zero creativity, midfield is non-existent in controlling the game, and the defense blew it on the goal....and all they are doing is passing it to each other backwards...ouch!!!
There is no creativity with the players on the field.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

And the only offensive players on the bench are Altidore and Torres.

The strategy needs to change if the US can't slice and dice El Salvador.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

don't forget freddy adu.
This is typical of an American coached national team. Look at Sampson, Arena and now Bradley. Just pass and possession...players cannot be creative.

You will love this quote from Bradley about Adu who played his ass of in the Olympics.
but Bradley seemed to indicate, before a workout at Estadio Cuscatlan, that Adu is unlikely to play. “No part of a qualifying match includes in any way the idea that it’s a great time to look at someone,” Bradley said. “We’re playing to win. Playing with the maturity we need to have to play and win and hopefully get to the World Cup final.”

Playing to win?? and he puts Califf to start?? Ching does nothing up front...

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Except for Califf, these are the same field players who just sliced and diced Mexico a few weeks ago. And I refuse to believe that Onyewu's absence is the reason none of them can connect on a simple pass, and couldn't even before the goal.

Posted by: benonthehill | March 28, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Meant to say he played his ass of in the U20 world cup in 2007.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

true true...i missed on that one.
They are playing so........boring. That's the only word I can come up with.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Actually, look at the subs bench, heck, look at the message that we're commenting on!

Adu was cut.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

We have yet to win a second ball.
This reminds me of qualifying in the early 90s...

Posted by: billq1 | March 28, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

uggghhhh....you're right. He was scratched.
All I can do is shake my head.

When is the last time Ching scored a goal when it meant anything?? He hasn't done much this game. Altidore needs to get in the game.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Why do we play garbage like: Pearce, Hejduk(was a good player, but not anymore), Califf, Mastreoni, and Ching (even though he does all the dirty work)? This is typical of US coaches who are so damn conservative they make Rush Limbaugh look like a liberal hippy. This is the worst half of soccer I have seen from the US nats since the late 90s. The empty bucket midfield does not work if there is no wide play. Beasley has been awful and Dempsey isn't even playing Right Mid. What is going on? I can only hope that play picks up and we get away with a tie. I could see something like this happenning after watch the Guatemala game from the last round. We got lucky we won that game also. Lets hope we can pull another one out of our A**!!!!

Posted by: no_recess | March 28, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

hey...adu is on the bench...not sure he's part of the 18 roster for the game though

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

typical....US players don't know how to take opponents 1v1. anytime they are 1v1, they stop the push/attack and pass the ball back.
just like now.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

This goalie needs to get off the @#$%#%$@TRYDSGTer field.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

So there should be about six minutes of time here.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

holy crap

Posted by: combedge | March 28, 2009 10:42 PM | Report abuse

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!
what kind of defense was that???
FIRE BRADLEY!!!!!!!!!
get the old timers off the field

ha....they put altidore finally.
How is Altidore and Donovan going to score if the midfield is only passing backwards??

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

Two more minutes there.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

Altidore!!!

Posted by: combedge | March 28, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Altidore GOOOOOOAAALLLLL!!!!!!!
He should've started this game.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

ok, they did get him the ball on that one..haha

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

The United filled in about half of the lower bowl tonight, I guess people stayed home to watch the US v. ES., good choice as it was a boring game tonight.

Posted by: PowerBoater69 | March 28, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

To be fair Redskin, it was a nice taketown and layoff by Ching.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Well, sure glad we've covered the brad guzan experience.

Has anyone on el Salvador NOT been carried off the pitch?

Posted by: joshuaostevens | March 28, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

yes, it was...and got some wide runs from hedjuk.
ching did well on that one.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I'm being carried off too.

Posted by: RedDevil1 | March 28, 2009 10:54 PM | Report abuse

By the way, if I'm the ref I card that last guy for time wasting.

Posted by: joshuaostevens | March 28, 2009 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Ouch. I think I just pulled a muscle. Stretcher please!!

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 10:57 PM | Report abuse

GOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL
damn...it's about time they played with some passion to score a goal.
hope they keep playing to score to win and not back off.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

man, hejduk was totally unmarked. kinda the way he failed to mark castillo at the other end!

Posted by: combedge | March 28, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Joshua- Yes he should have. Especially since he just wanted him to roll off the pitch to play on.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

me too..what the heck, carry me off.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Is brad guzan capable of catching a ball? Not sure I've ever seen it happen.

Posted by: joshuaostevens | March 28, 2009 11:00 PM | Report abuse

I still don't understand why Altidore isn't starting for the US.

Posted by: tundey | March 28, 2009 11:02 PM | Report abuse

thank god for Heydude and Torres. They saved us this game.

Posted by: droquew | March 28, 2009 11:03 PM | Report abuse

Seven minutes? I've really never seen a visiting team get seven minutes while on the attack. That's better than a card.

Posted by: joshuaostevens | March 28, 2009 11:03 PM | Report abuse

HOW THE HELL CAN YOU CALL OFFSIDE ON THAT??? ALTIDORE DIDN'T PLAY THE BALL!! HE COULDN"T HAVE. IT WAS TEN FEET OVER THE CROSSBAR ALREADY!!

YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY PLAY THE BALL NOW TO BE INTERFERING WITH PLAY!

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I don't think they called him offside, I think he called him for playing the keeper instead of the ball. Wrong, he made a clear path in front of the keeper, playing neither.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | March 28, 2009 11:11 PM | Report abuse

AND the goalie was out of the net area so altidore wasn't even in the play....
well, it was a home team call i guess. They didn't want the US to score again...

why wasn't beasley making runs on the flank like hedjuk???

we need our younger players on the pitch now..these old timers only like to hold the ball and pass back..
our youngsters play the game...

Posted by: Redskins2881 | March 28, 2009 11:11 PM | Report abuse

===

No. It was offside. The whistle came after the scissor kick, and the Ref pointed at Altidore in the goal area and raised his arm for an IFK. If it had been in for the challenge on the GK, it would have been sooner and probably a DFK for charging or pushing.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I guess youre, in which case it's total bush league crap.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | March 28, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

I don't think Beasley should be starting. He was made of glass, and was a very weak shadow of his former self.

Torres deserves to play next to Bradley.

as for the game...

DON'T YOU EVER SCARE ME LIKE THAT, AGAIN!

(by them, I am of course referring to the us team, who nearly lost a game to the diving squad).

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 11:17 PM | Report abuse

Diving squad? Looked more like a theatre troop to me.

Posted by: mason08 | March 28, 2009 11:20 PM | Report abuse

We got so lucky to get out of there with a tie. Not a good showing in my opinion.

I can tell you why Altidore doesn't start, he's horrible on the ball under pressure.

Was it just me or was Beasley out of position about 70% of that match? Not only that, but he had absolutely no energy out there. How many times did players get the ball on his side and no overlapping run into space by him? The attack just fizzled out on his side all night.

We need some players who can deliver better service. A lot of missed passes too far ahead or too far behind the player. That Donovan breakaway should have been a chance on goal if the ball was layed ahead of him instead of bouncing behind him.

With this current line-up, it's not looking good for the WC. I'd rather have Altidore and Donovan up top with Adu behind them. You'd get pace in Donovan, size in Altidore and creativity and fearlessness from Adu.

Not sure what to do with the defenders...bunch of hackers out there, call it defense.

Posted by: mercurysnake77 | March 28, 2009 11:21 PM | Report abuse

Oh, yeah, and Califf isn't even close to a starting player.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | March 28, 2009 11:29 PM | Report abuse

...and neither is pearce....

Posted by: birdynumnum | March 28, 2009 11:36 PM | Report abuse

After the impact he made in this game and the Mexico game as a substitute, Altidore has got to start. It doesn't matter how much playing time he's getting in on his club team in Spain--he can flat out play. And Klejsten has got to sit until he can stop giving the ball away on every possession.

And why can't Dellacamera and Harkes simply say what everyone could plainly see? That the U.S. looked disjointed and awful out there for most of the match. Can ESPN find an announcing team that doesn't include a former U.S. national player to get a more objective perspective on these games?

Posted by: hudson22 | March 28, 2009 11:42 PM | Report abuse

I liked Torres. He had some creativity and vision. Not sure how he'd do a whole game since I've seen very little of his game (never seen him defensively), but I think he brings great things as a late game sub.

I was dissapointed in Beasely. I thought he gave up too easily on the 2nd goal in letting his guy cross the ball.

And its no wonder ES is constantly carded and falling men short in games. To keep faking injuries is a disgrace. I'm sorry, but after 5 mins that goalie should have been taken off the field. There was no excuse to extend the game that long. I understand he's the goalie, but the ref should have handled that better. ES almost lost that game in overage time, and honestly, they deserved to as karma.

Posted by: doh1 | March 28, 2009 11:51 PM | Report abuse

""That the U.S. looked disjointed and awful out there for most of the match. ""

How bout some props to the El Salvadorans!!! They whooped out butts for 70 minutes and had two great goals. Then they ran out of gas and camped, allowing us to get back in it . . .

Good tie for the U.S. Coming from 2 down in San Salvador is not easy. And if Ching had put that pass from Jozy in the corner, we would have made a remarkable comeback.

Posted by: delantero | March 28, 2009 11:56 PM | Report abuse

The first fifteen minutes weren't so much bad as they were a bit dull. ES sat back and the US side just felt them out for a bit. After the goal, the US started to press a bit, and became very disjointed. Fortunately, they picked it up after the second goal and got two back.

Lastly, that was a hell of a save by the replacement GK on Ching.

Posted by: mason08 | March 29, 2009 12:02 AM | Report abuse

"...they ran out of gas and cramped..."

really? you are joking...right?

Posted by: birdynumnum | March 29, 2009 12:05 AM | Report abuse

Well, everything I was going to say...

Torres was fantastic. Such a smart, calming player. The NotSasha.
Hedjuk is the man
Sasha is a turnover machine
Ching isn't flashy but smart
Where did LD go?
Xerez could've used Jozy today ;)

I love seeing a team that fakes injuries not win. Disgusting.

Beas was in a tough, tough position when they took Pearce out. He was asked to do too much.

Posted by: birdynumnum | March 29, 2009 12:05 AM

Nope. They were all over us and took advantage of mistakes. Simple as that. Watch the tape again.

Posted by: delantero | March 29, 2009 12:10 AM | Report abuse

For all of you complaining about the Salvadorans doing this or that . . . while I don't agree with petty gamesmanship. . . it's the refs fault for not moving things along . . . although he did add 7 minutes . . . that we used to almost win the match.

Posted by: delantero | March 29, 2009 12:13 AM | Report abuse

lets be honest...

1) if el salvador doesnt cramp up and run out of gas..they would've easily won they game..USA didnt get back into it until they dropped everyone to defend because they were out of gas..

2) if El Salvadors goalie doesnt get injured..they wouldve more than likey won..their back up goalie was HORRIBLE..he made really bad decisions..which the other one didnt make..

honestly guys..we are lucky to even come out with a tie..props yo El Salvador on a good game..

btw. i wouldnt mind seeing christian castillo or rodolfo zelaya in a DCU kit..

Posted by: wiz-skins07 | March 29, 2009 12:20 AM | Report abuse

The bunkering after the second goal seemed more like a tactical decision than one forced by conditioning. ES was doing just fine conditioning-wise until the goal. They just seemed to think two was good enough. Pretty silly choice when you know you're probably going to have to substitute a GK and your generally more talented opponent has yet to make a single change. Add to that knowing that you're going to have a ton of stoppage time, and what have a really bad game management.

Posted by: mason08 | March 29, 2009 12:36 AM | Report abuse

D'oh!!! USA had made two changes by the second goal. They were both of a very attacking nature.

I would have been happy to, had they not disgraced the game so shamefully. What Montes did with the fake leg injury was ridiculous. How the official allowed the trainers to stretch him and tend to him without leaving the field was also ridiculous. In my book, you dont get props for playing that way. especially when you don't do it well enough to win.

Posted by: VTUnited | March 29, 2009 2:13 AM | Report abuse

You really thought they were cramping up? I've got a stadium to sell you in Maryland, then...

Posted by: Reignking | March 29, 2009 10:21 AM | Report abuse

For about 80 minutes, USA looked like zombies playing kick-ball. Luckily, they finally woke up and mass-attacked the ES penalty area.

Pearce and Sascha had poor matches. Donovan was invisible. Beasley was stuck in second gear. For much of the match, Dempsey seemed to be the only player with moxie. The absence of Gooch and Howard showed just how key they are to the USA defense.

Let's hope the overall performance was an aberration -- and a wake-up call for T&T.

Posted by: runningcloud | March 29, 2009 10:29 AM | Report abuse

I tend to think that the ES goalkeeeper's cramping was real. His take off and landing on that free kick was awkward and you could tell something was wrong. The rest of the players who started dropping like flies all of a sudden? Not a chance in hell.

I also liked what I saw from Torres, but unless you want to play a 3-5-2 (which would get us killed against more skilled competition) I don't see a spot for him in the starting 11.

Posted by: mercurysnake77 | March 29, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

I watched the game twice (on Tivo).Guzan was weak; there are several other keepers (is he a Bradley fave from Chivas days?)
Same for Califf. In MF Beaseley was awful, no wonder GR keeps him out.Let's go with Rogers or Holden b/c in the WC Beaseley CAN'T play.LD was invisible again, and that after training with FC Bayern? I agree with posters re Adu: We need someone who can turn and be creative; STOP passing the ball backwards 3 out of 4 times!
