MLS Plans and Beckham Status

*We were hoping to receive official word on the MLS Cup venue (Seattle?) and All-Star Game visitor (Valencia?) this week, but because of legal details pertaining to the contracts, it now looks as though those announcements won't come until next week. After reading this Reuters story, one has to wonder if Valencia would bring a USL2 team to Salt Lake City on July 29.

*The latest in the Beckham saga.....

*Seattle forward Jarrod Smith (hip flexor injury) has been placed on injured reserve and won't be eligible to play until the seventh game of the league schedule (May 2 at Chicago). He is, however, eligible to play in the U.S. Open Cup qualifier against Real Salt Lake in late April. The Sounders dropped a 1-0 preseason decision to the River Plate reserves today in Buenos Aires.

Interesting, wonder if Season Ticket holders will get some sort of option in their ticket plans if it lands in Seattle. Sure would be a shame if all this value engineering created a situation where visitors would be gouged by locals snatching up tickets and driving up the prices? In a stadium with such a large capacity that would be pretty silly.

Beckham: Go, or go not. There is no more wasting our time.

At this rate, MLS may be able to buy a La Liga team. Atletico Miami de EspaƱa will pander to Miami's Eurosnobs while making money for MLS.

I hardly envisioned Beckham as a Jedi.

So the Barca-Miami deal was semi-quashed because Barca is a NIKE client, and now they want to bring another Spanish team with a big orange swoosh on their shirt for one of the league's marquee events. Genius.

Either way, hope they play the game at night so Los Che can wear their traffic cone orange unies. Brilliant, those.

Columbus Crew having a nice time in Liverpool. They beat Everton reserves 5-1, and Liverpool reserves 2-0. In a writeup on the Red's site, the word 'Schelotto' kept popping up....

Can someone recap the latest on Beckham as that link is blocked here at work. Thanks...

He twisted his ankle again... Oh wait, you wanted to know what happened not what I wish would happen so it would all go away.

I would call it a non-update update. Beckham, Milan and Galaxy are in talks. The deal being discussed is what Steve G posted a few days ago. Becks willing to forego cash to help the deal from getting all Argy Bargy...

Dude, this Argy Bargy crap is the new that's what she said, or the new black?

Thanks JkR-

I guess Valencia can just use the excuse "they were young and needed the money"?

That's probably their only motivation for appearing in the MLS All-Star game. Not much demand for the Valencia brand here in the US (although I've always enjoyed los che)

Argy Bargy: It is what it is.

Still think MLS ASG should go back to East v West. Say what you want about the lack of defending, it was usually fun in the E v W format, and more good MLS players could be recognized.

Valencia? Puh-lease.

Valencia, West Ham, Fulham - not exactly teams that come to mind when you say All Star.

Is Messi an Argy Barcy?

personally, i prefer "foofaraw". or perhaps "footiefaraw" would be more appropriate on this website?

I guess that the new 6 game IR is where Olsen may land until he is fully fit (which is perhaps why Mediate is still in camp).

Posted by: PhillyMLS | March 5, 2009 6:31 PM | Report abuse

Why does the MLS keep doing this for the All Star game? It's embarrassing to assemble an All Star team of the entire league to play some European side. I guess it's one thing if it's Barcelona or AC Milan or Liverpool or something, but a side like Valencia? Lame.
