Tuesday Kickaround

*It's a critical night for the only MLS team in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, the Houston Dynamo, which needs a victory or multi-goal tie at Atlante to win the two-leg series. The first game, at Houston, ended in a 1-1 tie. Away goals count.

*Americans Abroad:
Yesterday
F Mike Grella in the 18 but didn't play in Leeds' 1-1 tie at Oldham
Today
F Eddie Johnson and Cardiff City vs. Barnsley
D Jay DeMerit and Watford at Plymouth
D Frank Simek and Sheffield Wednesday vs. Reading
GK Marcus Hahnemann and Reading at Sheffield Wednesday
F Jemal Johnson and MK Dons at Northampton

*Soccer on TV:
England, Portsmouth-Chelsea 2:30 p.m. Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Espanol
Italian Cup, Lazio-Juventus 2:45 p.m. GolTV
England, Liverpool-Sunderland 3 p.m. Setanta
Copa Libertadores, Palmeiras-Colo Colo 6 p.m. Fox Espanol
Copa Libertadores, Caracas-Chivas 8 p.m. Fox Espanol
CONCACAF Champions League, Atlante-Houston 10 p.m. FSC, Telefutura

*Crystal Palace USA, the Baltimore-based USL2 club, has signed Bermuda forward John Barry Nusum (22 caps, 17 goals). He will join the club after completing his indoor season in Philadelphia in late March or early April. CP will host the New York Red Bulls in a preseason friendly next Thursday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

*A Rochester defender will miss the season because of a heart condition. (No Marcelo Gallardo jokes allowed.)

*The Washington Freedom's preseason roster is beginning to take shape. Click here for the training camp list. Others might arrive before the March 29 opener.

*Golazo! Giuseppe Mascara for Catania against Palermo. A few days old, but worth a look:

UGH!!! Even the freaking HIGHLIGHTS the announcer had to mention Beckham for some odd reason even though he was not even in the damn stadium!

"Away goals count"

Well, I should hope so ;-)

19 days until United's first game!

Houston's offense was pretty anemic last week but they still have a decent chance of pulling out a victory (or whatever it will take to get them through). Atlante's league form has been unimpressive and Cancun's beaches don't give them the altitude advantage that many Mexican teams get when hosting an MLS opponent.

In spite of the first leg results I think Houston may have a better shot of pulling an upset and moving on than either Montreal or Puerto Rico.

Wow...Kimmy Germain getting to the camp stage for the Freedom. Great news for the Langley/JMU grad. Would be nice to keep track of the local girls who manage to land up on the various rosters.

"Land up"?

I actually hate the away goals rule, at least in terms of MLS playoffs..... I know it serves its purpose but still sometimes I'd just see overtime settle it, especially after a 0-0 1st leg then 1-1 2nd leg

Trade mark it Beckster1! It's really kind of crazy how Christian Gomez landeded up back up in DC United aren't it?

But seriously, thanks for the reminder on the CCL match tonight Steve! Lucky for the Rochester kid. Hope he recovers and is able to have a full life with or without soccer.
Trademark is one word isn't it... I need more sleep, sick kid has got the whole family way more out of it than normal. No, it's not the Olympic swim training device;-)

On Freedom roster, I've got the WNT in town and the only Freedom player in the Algarve Cup plays for Norway (if Lene Mykjaland is still on Freedom's roster). Norway plays USA on Monday, but country over club....

They haven't signed the Norwegian yet, or Lisa De Vanna, or Erin McLeod at least they haven't announced it. And they're apparently not going to have the services of ALi Kreiger anytime soon. I'm looking forward to Mr. Goff's Freedom piece, which he said he was working on a while back. I hope he asked some tough questions about the allocation and the draft.

You are aware that the away goals tiebreaker is not used in MLS Playoffs?

Posted by: EricB1 | March 3, 2009 12:29 PM | Report abuse

And I'd take an away goal final over listless extra time and penalties.

EJ played the full 90 in Cardiff's 3-1 victory.. encouraging!
