United Acquires Goalie

D.C. United just announced a trade with Los Angeles: United receives goalkeeper Josh Wicks, the Galaxy gets a conditional draft pick in 2010. Wicks, 25, made six appearances last season. Previously he played for Portland and Vancouver in USL1. Presumably, Wicks, who is 6 feet 3, will be the No. 2 keeper behind Louis Crayton while James Thorpe or Milos Kocic fills the developmental role. Kocic said he agreed to a developmental contract, but nothing has been formally announced and Thorpe remains in training camp. Full Wicks bio is here.

DCU is going to LA for keeper help? Oh boy.

Wicks > Platter I suppose...

Posted by: Reignking | March 10, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

So smaller roster sizes and DCU opts to go with four keepers?

Posted by: noptov | March 10, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

That whole looking to LA for goalkeeping help scared me too, Reignking.

Posted by: sitruc | March 10, 2009 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Huh? Four goalies?

One of the young goalkeepers -- Thorpe or Kocic -- won't make the final roster. Isn't that obvious?

Posted by: Steve Goff | March 10, 2009 4:05 PM | Report abuse

He's cr*p. He's no way better than Wells and we could have picked up Dan Kennedy during the expansion draft.

Posted by: Charisma_Man | March 10, 2009 4:08 PM | Report abuse

he was very un-impressive last year...

Posted by: bonghits4gomez | March 10, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of goalkeepers... if the direction of a shooter's plant foot is indicative of where he will send his penalty kick, then Gerrard blew that out of the water. On his just-made PK, Gerrard pointed his plant foot to the right corner, but sent the ball the other way. Neatly done. 2-0 Red.

Look for Heinze or Pepe to get tossed this game...

I guess the real deal is the kids aren't all right! Bye, Bye grommet!

Posted by: DadRyan | March 10, 2009 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Goff - is this an immediate signing or is he actually going to be on trial first? Seems a little silly to sign some backup keeper they don't even know to the roster... oh wait, they already did that with Zach wells.

Posted by: Dynaformer | March 10, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Some really dumb questions coming through...

Posted by: Reignking | March 10, 2009 4:28 PM | Report abuse

I like what i saw of him during the pan pacific championship. He def. is no worst than Thorpe, and IMO waaay better than wells.

I'd say Kocic and him will battle it out for the #2 spot, based on the talent people tell him this guy had in college.

So can anynoe give me any personal insight on how hes been practicing with DC? Is he as good as this hype i hear? I saw wicks with LA, looked better than Cronin and Wells IMO.

Posted by: BolivianDCFan | March 10, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

crayton is the starter, kocic presumably is the no. 3 keeper. they auditioned platter for the no. 2 job and didn't like him. so now it's wicks' turn. at this point, so close to the start of the season, it seems certain he will be on the roster for the opener.

Posted by: Steve Goff | March 10, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

What!................really? Zack Wells #2

Posted by: RM27 | March 10, 2009 4:32 PM | Report abuse

Did they not like Platter's on-field performance or more likely was DCU not anxious to pay a transfer fee (since he is still under contract) to Minnesota for essentially a reserve goalie (when it could flip a fairly worthless late round draft pick to LA and get a similar USL-caliber starting goalie but one who also has some MLS experience)?

Wicks: the human suitcase.

"Wicks has nine tattoos already and hopes to add to his collection. His goal is to get one in every city which he plays in."

You young poeple may want to ask your parents to explain the suitcase analogy.

This move does not fill me with confidence, especially with Crayton currently hurt and out of contract at mid-season.

I can't help but think of the Simpsons...

Principal Skinner: We both know these children have no future!
Children: (look at Skinner, stunned)
Principal Skinner: Prove me wrong, kids! Prove me wrong!

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | March 10, 2009 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Ugh. This roster stuff is giving me an ulcer...

Posted by: Dynaformer | March 10, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Arena has many faults as a soccer coach - but getting rid of good goalkeepers for peanuts is not one of them.
My optimism is shrinking a bit each day. This move makes me scratch my head. With a Bowie knife.

Hopefully I see something in Charleston on Saturday to make me feel better again :-)

dcufan: as long as you don't watch the game, there are plenty of good things to see in Charleston :)

This is going to be another crappy season for this team. We have no defense, and we are relying on players in their mid-30's to lead this team. We are being picked to finish last by almost everyone. I must say the front office has done an awful job trying to rebuild this team after last season's disaster. Just look at the RSL game as a prime exapmle of DC's inability to defend.

"Wicks > Platter I suppose..."

You are sooo wrong. I've seen them both play. Platter is much better than Wicks. DC's loss, Thunders gain.

Wicks played for Portland and had a good season but played behind a good defense.

@I-270: Well, back in the day, he was representative of the baseball utility player who found himself frequently traded from team to team.

Imagine my surprise upon reading that Wikipedia article that he DIDN'T get the nickname "Suitcase" because he was traded so often...so much for the caricatures on the back of those old Topps baseball cards that ALWAYS showed him totin' a suitcase.

Where have you gone, Joe Shlabotnik?

Posted by: SportzNut21 | March 10, 2009 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Bayern certainly do not need LD. They just set a goal-scoring record.

The funny thing is, Real could go on to win La Liga (a bit tought, but they can do it) and Ramos will still be fired because of tonight's result. They have become a joke in football.

Posted by: RedDevil1 | March 10, 2009 5:38 PM | Report abuse

It's great that we passed on Stefan Frei (already signed with the league, salary not counting against the cap). We really have this goalkeeping situation nailed down.

Do we know what we're doing?

I see a couple of meanings behind this. Because Wicks was just cut and DCU could have claimed him on waivers in the next waiver draft (probably in a few more weeks):

1. Crayton may be iffy for the opener and the team doesn't want to start Kocic or Thorpe in that situation. Now if it was a really bad injury, I think they'd have done something else. But this could just mean--no practice for Crayton for 2 weeks and the team wants someone with MLS experience. And Platter wasn't it. BTW, my understanding is that there was no transfer fee for Platter. Maybe he's still under contract but I thought that Minnesota wouldn't stand in his way if he got an MLS offer.

2. Or Kocic and Thorpe just haven't impressed as either being MLS ready--potential yes but game-ready no. So Wicks provides a dirt-cheap backup with MLS experience while either Kocic or Thorpe gains seasoning (not sure how with no Reserve League this year).

3. Arena is NOTORIOUS for being hard on GKs. Other than the NT, his record in the pros as been to constantly seek options, switch at the drop of a hat, drop someone as their form dips. None of that means that Wicks is the next Cannon, only that being cut/traded by Arena means nothing in this instance.

Posted by: JoeW1 | March 10, 2009 5:48 PM | Report abuse

He was under contract with MN for 2 more years as you say JoeW1, but MN wasn't going to let there #1 keeper go for free. As Thunder GM told me, we developed him. They were certainly expecting compensation for him but they weren't going to say, no you can't go unless of course DC wasn't willing to pay a equitable price for him.

Posted by: Inside_MN_Soccer | March 10, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

So if the senior roster is full now, then that means we have no room to add any other players come this summer. Or maybe Wicks will already have been released by then?

Posted by: Dynaformer | March 10, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

The 4 goalies go with the 4 center backs. We don't have many slots left.

Posted by: VirginiaFan | March 10, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Coulda been worse. We coulda traded a center back one year removed from being defender of the year for him . . .
