Cubans to Real Maryland

On a day when the USA lifted some travel and telecom restrictions pertaining to Cuba, the Insider has learned that two Cuban refugees are on the verge of signing with Real Maryland, the USL2 club based in Rockville. (Are those news items related? Well, no, but we like to stay topical here.)

The players are defenders Yendry Diaz and Loanni Cartaya Prieto, who bolted from the Cuban under-23 national team last year during the Olympic qualifying tournament in Tampa.

As part of its preparations for the March April 25 season opener against Bermuda, Real Maryland lost to third-division rival Crystal Palace Baltimore, 1-0, on Friday at UMBC and to Salvadoran club Aguila, 3-0, on Saturday before an estimated 2,500 spectators at Richard Montgomery High School.

If United ever plays Real Maryland, the headline I'd write:

"United Smokes Cubans at Montgomery High"

If one of these players gets injured from taking a shot in the huevos, you can report they were "castro-ted".

Arnaud's goal was a cracker, but McBride's is pure class. And to think there still are people who think all he can do is head the ball!

"As part of its preparations for the March 25 season opener against Bermuda, Real Maryland lost..."

Not a good sign, if part of your preparations is to lose - twice.

Cubans are not the only illegal things being smoked @ Montgomery High.

Goffihno with the Cuban connection.

They both have had some looks from at least two USL1 clubs (Miami had the edge on Puerto Rico but Islanders ownership got to them about 2 days after the defections)& at least ChivasUSA if I recall correctly.

Real Maryland is a much imporved team this year. They look like a different club.

Nice coup for Real Maryland. They've got a good young coach as well.
