"He had a rather unpleasant departure from Atalanta last week."

Of course he did! He's a...let's just say he has the attitude of a striker. I can't stand him.

The combined age of the Galaxy starting lineup must be nearing a millennium by now, right?

Posted by: the_slammer | April 7, 2009 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Good fit for Galaxy? Old, past his prime. Yeah. That sounds about right for Galaxy. Throw in that he doesn't like to be jeered by fans and Galaxy has no fans, it sounds like a match made in Heaven.

I read that too quickly and thought it said Atlanta. I figured he was traveling on Delta.

And to add to the humiliation of playing for an MLS team, Vieri would be a teammate of Greg Berhalter, who completely shut him down in a match in Sicily about 7-8 years ago.

Posted by: b18bolo | April 7, 2009 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Seems like the Red Bulls would be a better fit. I understand there are a few Italians in that area.

For a moment I thought it said "Viera" -- as in Patrick Viera. THAT's a guy I'd like to see in MLS.

Posted by: joedoc1 | April 7, 2009 11:11 AM | Report abuse

I wouldn't trust stories from the Gazzetta at face value. I think they're looking for somewhere to send Vieri - why not MLS?

However, to speculate if it were true: it would be a horrible move, and yet so typical of the Galaxy. Vieri is exactly the wrong type of player for MLS - arrogant, injury-prone, well past his prime, never known as an inspiring team player. If Bruce Arena really wants Vieri for his team, I'll be very surprised and disappointed.

sorry if this offends, but I think the Galaxy are the Redskins of the MLS!

Vieri to Galaxy?

What could go wrong!?

Posted by: teo_68 | April 7, 2009 11:20 AM | Report abuse

Well, I guess if he brings that "showgirl" with him... There's plenty of work for showgirls in LA, right? Wait, Las Vegas isn't in LA?

Seriously -- it's stupid. The Galaxy doesn't need a forward, much less a problem child...unless Arena plans to keep Donovan in the midfield. Would this mean Beckham isn't coming back? Or is Vieri willing to sign for less than DP money?

Posted by: fischy | April 7, 2009 11:21 AM | Report abuse

LA can't get much worse, so why not give Vieri a shot..? I dont think he will solve any problems, but you never know.

Posted by: nico78 | April 7, 2009 11:25 AM | Report abuse

Wow, LA Galaxy are interested in a whiny Prima Donna...Sounds like a perfect fit to me...

Posted by: tphayden78 | April 7, 2009 11:27 AM | Report abuse

This sounds more like an AEG decision than it does Arenas.

Vieri to Galaxy only makes sense if they're planning on selling Donovan (which is somewhat expected). They'll need a striker and Vieri may be the only "proven" option available.

However, the thought of Vieri with the Galaxy makes me laugh and I really hope they waste more money on the has-been. He was never all that great and benefited more from "potential" and playing on good teams than he did from his exceptional skill and work ethic.

I'd absolutely love to see the Galaxy suffer through another year in the cellar of MLS. The only thing that would make it better is if the Red Bulls were tied with them on points.

Posted by: TCompton | April 7, 2009 11:30 AM | Report abuse

Hard to see how this could work. He will likely require more money than LA has, or will have once they get Beckham back for his half season. Sounds like lots of baseless speculation from a paper that likely has no idea that MLS has a salary cap.

Posted by: fedssocr | April 7, 2009 11:32 AM | Report abuse

Would Bruce Arena actually sign off on such a move? He's got enough problems with the guys he has.

Posted by: Juan-John | April 7, 2009 11:33 AM | Report abuse

His English is excellent (as he was raised in Australia...), he has always been more of a physical player rather than an Italian style one.

Not sure if Gazzetta is reliable, but, if any Italian could make it in the MLS, Vieri would be it...assuming that he is healthy enough.

PS Elisabetta Canalis dumped him a lnog time ago, so she is not coming with him...:)

Posted by: malatestiano | April 7, 2009 11:37 AM | Report abuse

I would LOVE for the Glaaxy to take on a high-maintenance striker like Vieri.

I'm looking forward to Arena blowing a gasket frequently.

Posted by: mmathai1 | April 7, 2009 11:38 AM | Report abuse

Has anyone actually openly invited 'cancer' in? Well if it is a first LA would be the place.

Posted by: ncguy | April 7, 2009 11:39 AM | Report abuse

P.P.S I went to the gazzetta website.

Actually Gazzetta is only saying that "CHI" (one of the worse gossip rags)stated that he is going to LA with his girlfriend with a reccomendation fron Beckham just to have a sort of "audition" with the Galaxy...

The "showgirl" he is pictured with is named Melissa Satta. I don't know who she is, or Elisabetta Canalis is, but Melissa looks kind sexy...in a pouty, high-maintenance way.

Honestly, watching MLS defenses so far this season, the guy could put in 10 or 20 easily. It's a gamble, but every foreign player brought to MLS is a gamble.

Posted by: uac1530 | April 7, 2009 11:53 AM | Report abuse

This won't help MLS's reputation as a retirement league.
MLS needs to focus on youth.

Posted by: Washago | April 7, 2009 11:55 AM | Report abuse

come on. its a fake story. his agent is just trying to get publicity for a move somewhere else.

Posted by: bobbyoshea | April 7, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

How much is he getting paid, and who is paying it? They have their designated player so how can they do this???

Posted by: VirginiaFan | April 7, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Just what is the long-term goal of the LA Galaxy per AEG? I don't get it.

No one is going to question their ability to go out and talk to or engage better than average talent and the occasional superstar or past his sell-by date superstar (Ronaldinho). And yes - we all know they can pay for it.

But really - the Steve Sampson title was a fluke in my opinion and was more a failure of the Revs to capitalize - this team is how far into it's Post Sigi era which was supposed to usher in attractive playing styles and larger than MLS aspirations?

The ridiculous aspirations are still there, but the results and the execution are becoming comical.

I like it!
Big (or biggest) stadium in the league -check
Lots of money thrown at older, famous players, resulting in lack of performance on the field -check
Solid record of past glory but nothing lately -check
Coaching turnover (though nearly all teams in all sports do this now) - check
Personnel decisions made without buy-in from the coach -check

hmmm...is the Danny a silent partner in AEG? Will Landycakes be brought in as the next PK for the 'skins? Has Alexi been spotted anywhere near Ashburn lately?

Posted by: CDRHoek | April 7, 2009 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Does Ms. Melissa Satta come in the deal too?

Posted by: delantero | April 7, 2009 12:48 PM | Report abuse

"He was never all that great and benefited more from "potential" and playing on good teams than he did from his exceptional skill and work ethic."

This is a ridiculous comment. Vieri scored over 100 goals with Inter in less than 150 games. He averaged a goal every other game at the international level. He was a beast in his prime.

Even last year, as a sub with Fiorentina, he scored 9 goals in 36 appearances (only twelve of them were starts). He can still make an impact.

Having said that, I don't think its worth signing him to DP money.

I seem to remember Arena, in his typical fashion, sarcasticly dismissing the rumors that Del Piero and Owen were headed to LA within the last 2 months. I give this rumor about as much legitimacy as I do this Messi and Terry to DCU rumor that I'm going to start right now:

I just heard that DC United was going to sign Lionel Messi and John Terry.

Considering we had less than 13,000 people at our last game (regardless of excuses), I don't think that the "no fans" comment is fair at all.

Signing Vieri is like signing TOwens...if Vieri were 5 years younger.

@ MountainStateModerate

I'm a massive Fiorentina supporter and watched almost all of those games. And, trust me, while the numbers may look decent at first blush, this man has very little left in the tank. 3 of those goals were in the UEFA cup, and I believe none of those were against what you or I would consider to be quality competition (though it would certainly be a step up from MLS).

He cannot run, has even less of a right foot than he used to (essentially none at this point), never was known for his ability with the ball at his feet, cannot jump over a phone book and often angrily bickers with teammates during the course of a game. This doesn't take into account the fact that aside from his 6 year stint with Inter when he was at his peak, he's moved clubs annually.

Also, I'd love to watch training sessions to see him and Bruce Arena clash. A couple of nasty bastards with legendary tempers ... sounds like a match made in heaven!

Are you kidding me? What are they planning for, this month?

Berhalter and Vieri? They must be really buying into the "super club" mentality still. It's a soccer team, not an ad campaign! It has to last for more than 30 seconds.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | April 7, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Since I don't read Italian, does the article claim that AEG is trying to get him, or are you all just jumping on the Galaxy again without provacation? (and who says you guys don't think of us as rivals?)

Anyway, considering Vieri spent plenty of time in Oz (he was in Marconi's youth system), one would think Sydney would be a more logical destination. But MLS is still the go to location of the week for the international press.

Hey EB: You are the Galaxy. That is provocation enough. It's like having a Kick Me sign written on a post it note hanging from the back of your AEG issued Herbal Life sponsored trousers...

I lived six months in English-speaking Australia and rarely understood a word they were saying. They call their language "Strine," (contraction of "Australian" when spoken with the proper Down Under accent).

yankiboy, besides the fact that you are the one who mispelled the word English...I am not sure I get your point.

What I was trying to say is that most Italian players usually have a very hard time playing for non Italians teams due to language issues. In Vieri's case this would not be an issue like his helath would actually be.

PS for the non believers: please google images for Elisabetta Canalis and then tell me who is better her or the new girlfriend... :)

Posted by: malatestiano | April 7, 2009 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Hey, Blanco worked out and he had the same, if not worse, reputation.

If you were playing (and scoring) in Serie A less than a year ago, you can be great in MLS.

But this sounds like it isn't going to happen. I agree Red Bulls might be a nice fit, or even the new Sounders team. They have lots of money.

LA Galaxy & MLS should pursue Romario. Isn't he past his prime and available?
