Friday Kickaround

*It's been a long time in the works and now it's official: UEFA Champions League finalist Barcelona will play the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 1 at the Rose Bowl and the Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field four days later. A third friendly has yet to be finalized.

*Rumblings in MLS circles are that Philadelphia is moving closer to hiring a head coach, which seems ridiculously early in the process. However, the 2010 expansion club seems to want to have someone in place to oversee player personnel issues as soon as possible. Seattle didn't hire a coach prior to its debut season until late last fall, but did name Chris Henderson as technical director in January 2008.

*MLS tonight: San Jose Earthquakes (1-4-2) at New York Red Bulls (1-5-2), 7:30 p.m. Attendance predictions on a Friday night at the Swamp for this grim matchup?

*USL2 derby: Crystal Palace Baltimore at Real Maryland, 6 p.m. tomorrow at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.

*According to Soccer America, Gold Pride, WPS's Bay Area club, will reduce ticket prices by 25 percent and downsize seating for its matches at Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium to 5,680 from 10,500. (It will remain the same for MLS games.) The team drew an average of just 2,900 in its first the past two home matches.

*DCU President Kevin Payne's appearance on "Washington Post Live":

Do Barcelona fly commercial or are they borne from venue to venue on angels' wings?

Oh, those Philadelphia Union-ites! They sure like to do things early. First, they create a noisy fan club before the city has a team. Then they leak their club name and logo before their big announcement. Now that want to hire a coach almost 6 months in advance.

My guess is they're doing this only so the Sons of Ben can start the Fire the Coach chats before they play their first game!

:)

Steve, any news on a potential United/Madrid match in August?

5,680 for MLS?

That's awful.

Posted by: Reignking | May 8, 2009 9:42 AM | Report abuse

The Union - god awful. A bunch of failed Mutiny execs running the show . . .

Posted by: LCR-54 | May 8, 2009 9:47 AM | Report abuse

Reignking,

10,500 still for MLS.

Posted by: VirginiaBlueBlood | May 8, 2009 9:53 AM | Report abuse

4,500 tonight in the swamp, but announced attendance will be 7,800.

Posted by: 415M | May 8, 2009 9:54 AM | Report abuse

kevin payne sure sound excited and pumped up about the stadium rally! Actually he more and more just sounds like a beaten down man that is just ready for it all to end.

Umm...Have the NY papers noted there's a game tonight? Maybe the Red Bulls' fans (the whole baker's dozen) don't even know they're playing? Plus, it's the Sabbath. I'm sure they'll announce at least 8,000. Take off a zero to get the real #.

Posted by: fischy | May 8, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

NRYB attendance: Mast Juan, 698 other guys, and a vast Shadow Host from Dunharrow.

How come we don't get videoclips when Goff is on WPL?

Posted by: fischy | May 8, 2009 10:00 AM | Report abuse

I'm going to say there will be 2000 people inside Giants Stadium. That includes the players, coaching staffs, team managements and stadium employees. There may be a few fans included in that total too.

Posted by: TCompton | May 8, 2009 10:03 AM | Report abuse

Just curious why we kept seeing a still photo of Jaime and listening to Max Bretos' "Yyyesssssss" in the background....

Reignking,

10,500 still for MLS.

Posted by: VirginiaBlueBlood

Ah, that's not how I read it...but you are right. I think.

Any news on the stork arriving for the Quarantas?

Posted by: BlackandRedRedDevil | May 8, 2009 10:16 AM | Report abuse

Hey Goff Are you going to be @ the Rally?

Posted by: BarraLoco | May 8, 2009 10:22 AM | Report abuse

Maybe The Nakamura will be there. The rally is probably more of a Metro story.

Posted by: fedssocr | May 8, 2009 10:24 AM | Report abuse

And the Fischer, and we can throw the "journalists" into the Anacostia when we get to Lot 8.

Payne - "we want to see the winningest {sic} regional team stay in the region"

Posted by: Kev29 | May 8, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

I predict the score of the Barca-LA game to be 8-1 Barca. LA is awful, they look like amatuers along with the Red Bulls.

Posted by: RedskinAddict | May 8, 2009 11:18 AM | Report abuse

"A third friendly has yet to be finalized" that should be DC United. It should have been United on Aug 1st not Galaxxxxmm in the first place. They are hoping Bara addition to Beck.

Posted by: DCUnitedFootball | May 8, 2009 11:19 AM | Report abuse

I think it's nice that the Galaxy's Management is giving its fans an opportunity to watch a professional soccer team this summer.

Posted by: TCompton | May 8, 2009 11:28 AM | Report abuse

FC Gold Pride ticket prices are ridiculous. Lowest ticket was $18 I believe.

Posted by: CACuzcatlan | May 8, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Maybe the RedBulls should give away some of that Kentucky grilled Chicken that caused all the rioting up there in NY, then maybe they'll hit my 7,632 prediction

SG, downsize from 5,680 to 10,500?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2009 12:08 PM | Report abuse

Scratch that, SG. Api-po-lo-lo-logies are in order. I read your comment wrong. I think it's against natural law to be in a cube on such a nice Friday.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

It's reverse expansion Kosh. All the big companies are doing it.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | May 8, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

Goff, FC Gold Pride has played three home games and the average attendance is a little over 4,000. Get your facts straight.

Posted by: bugaboo1 | May 8, 2009 1:48 PM | Report abuse

And no, the Quakes are not downsizing when they play Buck Shaw.

Posted by: bugaboo1 | May 8, 2009 1:49 PM | Report abuse

I say RBNY-SJ match actually draws 7,643 but they report 12,879.

Is this like the showcase showdown? Do I actually win something (and not a case of Red Bull because I want nothing to do with that product until they sell our "enemies" and even then I won't won't anything to do with that product...)

Posted by: yankiboy | May 8, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

I can understand hating Red Bull because they own your rival team, but don't you have at least some respect for them b/c they are building the best soccer stadium in the country and basically the entire continent with the exception of Mexico.

Posted by: CACuzcatlan | May 8, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Gold Pride item fixed/updated to reflect the 2,900 average has come in the past two games, not overall. My apologies.

West Ham United(H) VS Liverpool

Willhill 6.00 3.40 1.50
6.00 4.00 1.53

In those recent matches, Liverpool were playing pretty well, for they need to get 1st position in the league. What's more, with Gerrard's recovery, Liverpool can get 3 points in this matches without much effort.

West Ham need to save their 7th position, but they scored only one goal in the recent matches verses those four top teams.
