Matchnight #7: United-Dallas

Greetings from RFK.

First thing I noticed upon entering Lot 8: Lots of Capitals jerseys sprinkled in with the DCU red and black. Big sporting day inside Washington city limits as the Caps seize Game 1 against the Penguins and the Nationals -- get this -- won a game. On the same day as the Kentucky Derby, it's United's turn to complete the local Triple Crown. Will they do it? They should against a Dallas side that is laboring.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.

Back soon with news, notes and the DCU lineup/subs.

DCU LINEUP: Kocic; Namoff, Jakovic, Burch; Pontius, Simms, Olsen, Quaranta, Wallace; Moreno, Emilio. Subs: Crayton, Janicki, Jacobson, McTavish, Khumalo, Gomez, N'Silu.

Fred remains out because of a serious family illness. Less than five months since losing his father in an auto accident, Fred has been confronted with another issue. Keep him in your thoughts.

As usual, you've arrived at the ultimate destination for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion.

Vamos United!
DC 3 - Dallas 1

Posted by: goonerunited | May 2, 2009 5:49 PM | Report abuse

It would be a big disappointment to end up with anything other than 3 points tonight. There are so many factors against Dallas:

- They're using a backup keeper (not that Sala is any good, but still)
- Their back four has been shuffled over and over again this year
- John, who was emerging as a starting CB, is out
- The potential replacements for John all have recent injuries or, in the case of Davies, have been in Dallas for less than a week
- Those potential replacements are pretty weak anyway
- Cunningham is out with a hamstring strain, meaning that if they fall behind their forward options re a 19 year old

DCU 4-1 (just like Dunkirk odds). I'll take Friesan Fire by a nose.

An errant mouse click sent this prematurely. Let's try again:

It would be a big disappointment to end up with anything other than 3 points tonight. There are so many factors against Dallas:

- The potential replacements for John all have recent injuries or, in the case of Davies, have been in Dallas for less than a week

All that comes on top of the fact that they're just not very good. Other than Cooper, Van den Bergh, Moor, and maybe Ricchetti, they lack good starters and there isn't much depth behind them.

If we can cut the service off to Cooper, there's not much else going on for Dallas. I don't want to look past them at all, but this should be our easiest home game of the season. If we're a good team (and there are signs that we just might be), we should win this game with relatively little fuss.

Good news for us:

Columbus and TFC tie 1-1 (despite Columbus having 12 more shots, 6 more shots on goal, and 7 more corners). A win will take us ahead of TFC on goal differential and put us 7 ahead of Columbus.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | May 2, 2009 6:01 PM | Report abuse

Columbus and TFC tied again!?! With the Trillium Cup hanging in the balance!?! Oh, what will happen? Who will claim this coveted trophy? The suspense is killing me!

Posted by: Kenobi | May 2, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Don't worry, their wannabe hooligan fans will fight it out in the parking lot.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | May 2, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

Kocic? I'm assuming Crayton's healthy. Hmmm . . . . And wasn't John at least on the bench for the NYRB game?

Posted by: benonthehill | May 2, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see Burch -- in a 4-4-2.

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 6:37 PM | Report abuse

We've got a game in had against Toronto, too.

The next five games are all going to be tough so we better get 3 points tonight.

Posted by: JaimeSegundo | May 2, 2009 6:40 PM | Report abuse

If Kocic turns out to be better than Crayton as a rookie DC might be able to erase one of its weaknesses. Soft goal keeping and a disorganized d has plagued them. Is it too early to get my hopes up?

Posted by: bighungry | May 2, 2009 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Good luck Fred!

Posted by: alan19 | May 2, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Kocic did well against this team last time. If we're going to try him out, better Dallas than Seattle.

As a John non-fan, I am surprised. Why did we get him? For 33 year old depth? Shaking my head.

My guess is that Moreno and Quaranta will be interchangeable in this formation. Burch is still a liability. Go DC!!

Posted by: UnitedDemon | May 2, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, Fred should get some time. But, if he's not back next week, we need to hear what's up.

As far as foreign acquisitions go, "family" can now be considered code. With Fred, I want to believe him, but this is turning into "Never cry Wolf" in reverse. I'm tired of the wool over the eyes bit.

Anyone got a live feed please???

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | May 2, 2009 7:16 PM | Report abuse

looks like channelsurfing.net will have it

Posted by: notafembot | May 2, 2009 7:19 PM | Report abuse

do i need downloads for it?

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | May 2, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

UnitedDemon: were you hoping that another family member of Fred's dies?

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

crapp, channelsurfing.net only takes IE and firefox -- im on a mac...

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | May 2, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

haha

Feed is great, too :p

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

UnitedDemon- Give Fred a break. I'm 100% sure that he'd rather be here on the field than dealing with whatever it is he's dealing with right now.

Did anyone else watch the pre-game show on FSC? Chris Sullivan said he spoke to Will Chang before the match, and that Chang had a conversation with Tom Soehn about a three-year plan that involves bringing in a lot of youth. Pretty interesting. They're definitely doing it right on the youth front, with three rookies starting tonight. But does that guarantee Soehn another year or two?

Posted by: DCUMD | May 2, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

anyone got any other links :(

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | May 2, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Nice kickoff, Dallas. Are you 12?

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Reignking, that is exactly what I want.

I said: let him have another week off. But I will not sit around while another part of our team runs off, and uses "family" to give himself a week's head start. Do you remember Veron? Too long ago, OK, how about Roger?

Your comment was absolute hyperbole. It doesn't even make sense. I want Fred's family to be fine, and I want him back. Both parts. OK?

Posted by: UnitedDemon | May 2, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

All DCU so far. Two shots just wide by Moreno, Quaranta.

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

I was about to point out how that was the shortest post Chest ever had, then he said he mouse clicked early, and added more, and I still think it's in contention.

Look GREAT so far.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | May 2, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Off the post by Moreno! And rebound deflected!

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunate!

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | May 2, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Sigh. Goal Dallas from a corner.

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

More great chances for DCU. Unbelievable that they are losing.

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

The defense watched the ball. WTF?

Posted by: bighungry | May 2, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Kocic does well to not give up the rebound...but I still can't believe DCU is losing.

Posted by: Reignking | May 2, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

A few thoughts:
1. break Rocha's leg now.
2. why are Bretos and the other guy in love with Dallas? (Bretos mentioned the coach's blue eyes)
3. Kenny Cooper is just a plain dirty player with very little skill.
4. We should have scored.

It's frustrating when you dominate play and can't win.

If Christopher Sulivan makes another mispronunciation of Pontius as if he is Spanish

Posted by: inzzo79 | May 2, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Weird, last comment at 8:58. Server down?

""All that comes on top of the fact that they're just not very good. Other than Cooper, Van den Bergh, Moor, and maybe Ricchetti, ""

Ain't that the truth. Would disagree that Van den Bergh is "good." He's crafty, but he gets around, he's crafty -he's always down he's crafty - my only gripe is that he's crafty - he's just not my type . . . of player.

Get on Den Bergh and take the ball.

Jacobson just watched him cross the ball at the end. As did a few of our players throughout the game . . . he's not going to cut back on you!!

Posted by: delantero | May 2, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Back from the stadium.

Kocic could have had a better game. Any word on Ben? Looked like he was limping in the second half before he was taken out?

Posted by: Curious99 | May 2, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Good win. Nice to see our stars, our new players, our 2nd string keep, our vets finish this game!

Posted by: delantero | May 2, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

When your luck is so bad you can't score on the chances of the quality we were generating, Jaime Moreno can still win the game for you. That was a thrilling performance.

Posted by: dccal | May 2, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Great match

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | May 2, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah we are on top foe now. Let' hope it continues.

Posted by: DCUnitedFootball | May 2, 2009 11:24 PM | Report abuse

I guess we have found our playmaker, and he is Bryan Namoff. I think that was the third time this season that he provided the primary assistant from a long ball from the back. I hope opposing coaches aren't scouting this blog for tips because that play has earned us points multiple times this year. Forget the South American style, and viva Long Ball United!

Posted by: diego_r | May 3, 2009 12:05 AM | Report abuse

Hope Fred and his family are okay.

===================

I used to wonder whether his trace of a foreign accent was due to his birthplace, so I looked him up. Apparently he has a Redwood City, CA brogue.
