WPS Matchday: Freedom-Athletica

Greetings from Maryland SoccerPlex. My first trip up here this spring, and I must say, with the second level of seating, the Freedom Hill Beer Garden and the permanent fencing that encloses the complex, the club and the facility folks have really done well creating an intimate and professional setting. Too bad it's such a long travel distance for so many fans in the Washington area.

Kickoff between the Freedom (1-2-1) and St. Louis (0-2-1) is 6 p.m. ET on Fox Soccer Channel.

This is the Freedom's final appearance at SoccerPlex until May 31. The club is off next weekend, visits Boston on May 17 and then hosts Sky Blue as part of a doubleheader with D.C. United on May 23.

FREEDOM LINEUP (4-3-3): Spisak; Gilbeau, Whitehill, Sauerbrunn, Singer; Lindsey, Sawa, DeDycker; Long, Wambach, Bompastor. Subs: Scurry, Keller, Lohman, Janss, Moros, Zimmeck, De Vanna.

Your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts are welcome!

Oops. I thought it was a 7pm kick. Instead of typing comments here, I should be on the road.

I'm at work. So the frequently asked matchday question: Is there a live feed?
Is there one that doesn't make gov't networks vulnerable to spying Chinese and Russians?

great goal by Daniela, but Abby is absolutely getting mugged and only got the call once. guess it's not just MLS refs who are consistently inconsistent. we'll see if this ref takes Hope Solo's jersey after the game (think of the ratings that might garner!).

Scurry would have saved those goals.

Solo's body language is all wrong.

Mary Abigail Wambach runs wild.

Athletica are freakin' brutes.

nice comeback by the Freedom including a great header by Bompastor in between 4 defenders that she managed to poke over Hope "I should have had that" Solo.

i watched in fits and starts, but i have been enjoying the WPS games. the late Sunday time slot is a good one.

Goff's match article is up and includes a couple game pics. Abby Wambach looks like she's receiving a very high studs up challenge in one of them.

C'mon Goff it's not THAT far. Soccer moms and dads in NOVA (and farther afield) schlep to the Soccerplex every weekend for their kids' travel soccer games. The quality of the pitches (and the water park in warm weather) is worth the drive for most of us.

There's a water park out there?

Posted by: DadRyan | May 4, 2009 10:12 AM | Report abuse

The water park doesn't have any slides or anything real cool like that. It's more like a glorified mega-sprinkler. But it's pretty darn handy after a hot game.

I like how you make it sound like parents like driving their kids to things, loosek.

The Soccerplex is a wonderful venue for this level of attendance - the only problem is that it's so much harder to get to than RFK. I've been carpooling people from Metro for every game so far.

However, the next home game is at RFK on the 23rd!

the national team has a game on the 23rd against japan though. i'm predicting, from sky blue, rampone, o'reilly and kai will be out. from freedom, wambach for sure. maybe whitehill and/or lindsey.

so yeah, both teams will most likely be missing some key players at the rfk double header. i can't wait for abby to score her 100th international goal though.

Not to mention Sawa. That hurts.

RE: Waterpark. The indoor swim center adjacent to the spalsh park has two long slides and a few small ones. The recreational swimming hours are limited though.

Sitruc: I DO love driving my kids (and other folks' kids) to things. But that's just me.
