Taped TV: ESPN2, 11 p.m.

IT'S OVER. USA 2, SPAIN 0. USA ADVANCES TO CONFEDERATIONS CUP FINAL AGAINST BRAZIL OR SOUTH AFRICA. SPAIN, RANKED NO. 1 IN THE WORLD, HAD WON A WORLD-RECORD 15 STRAIGHT GAMES AND HADN'T LOST IN 2 1/2 YEARS, A STRETCH OF 35 MATCHES.

92ND: Onyewu a towering force in the box, USA continues to block and disrupt shots.

ADDED TIME: Three minutes.

89TH: Bornstein for Dempsey.

87TH: Scramble in box, USA blocks attempts.

87TH: Bradley RED card for what appeared to be a solid challenge.

86TH: Casey ruled offside, denying possible breakaway. Very close.

84TH: Casey for Altidore.

81ST: Howard punches out Alonso's booming shot. Spain desperation beginning to show.

74TH: GOAL!!!!! USA, 2-0. Dempsey takes advantage of Donovan's deflected cross, sliding right-footed finish from six yards after Ramos's lazy touch. Wow.

69TH: Feilhaber for Davies.

68TH: Cazorla for Fabregas.

68TH: Midway through the second half, still 1-0 USA. Spain must have had 80 percent of possession since halftime.

66TH: Clark makes potential goal-saving block, diving feet first to deny Ramos's shot from 12 yards.

64TH: DeMerit blocks shot, Howard save on shot from distance, Howard save at near post -- relentless.

56TH: Howard routine save on Villa at near post.

48TH: Howard diving save on Villa, Alonso misses narrowly high.

46TH-47TH: Donovan's threatening services, on a cross and corner kick.

HALFTIME: During its 35-game unbeaten streak, Spain trailed only four times. ... Altidore's goal was the first by a U.S. player against Spain since Gino Pariani at the 1950 World Cup.

HALFTIME: At the break, USA holds a 1-0 lead on Altidore's expert strike from the top of the box in the 27th minute. Spain mounted steady pressure and served several dangerous crosses, but tested Howard only a couple times.

45TH: Torres beats Bocanegra, cuts back, eight-yard angled shot saved by Howard with his left foot at near post!

44TH: Onyewu awkward high kick kills another Spanish threat. Big game for the big man from Washington.

42ND: Onyewu clears cross deep in box, corner kick. No threat.

40TH: Donovan receives ball behind defense but offside.

38TH: Fabregas cross deep in box, a little behind Torres, Onyewu clears for corner kick, which is of not threat.

36TH: Donovan 35-yard free kick, Dempsey running header off target. Bocanegra was all alone at the back post, waiting for the ball, but Dempsey made the bid.

35TH: Slow pace and USA resistance seeming to frustrate Spain.

32ND: Villa collects deflection in box, 12-yarder misses upper right corner.

31ST: Spector blocks Villa's bid deep in the box. Spain maintains pressure, earns consecutive corner kicks.

27TH: Goal USA!!! Altidore! 1-0. Davies-Dempsey combination work on left side creates opportunity, Dempsey pushes pass to Alitdore, who, at the top of the box, uses his upper-body strength to ward off defender, turn and fire an 18-yard shot off Casillas's right hand and into the corner of the net.

25TH: Onyewu clearance for a corner kick, Xavi's service headed out. Another corner kick thwarted, Davies fouled near midfield.

21ST: Donovan from 26 yards, harmless wide left.

20TH: Spain linking together passes in the final third, but Onyewu clears cross deep in box.

18TH: Torres ruled offside on 16-yard bid that Howard saved diving to his right.

15TH: We've played 15 minutes, both sides have created decent opportunities but no scoring. USA calm, composed, few mistakes against the world's top-ranked team.

11TH: Fabregas crosses in box to Torres at back post, one-time stab off target.

10TH: Fabregas attempt from distance, over the crossbar.

10TH: Very impressive, confident start for the Americans.

9TH: Dempsey 23 yards, narrowly wide left.

8TH: Davies redirects Bocanegra cross wide.

7TH: Dempsey crosses to Davies, bold bicycle kick sails wide from 14 yards.

6TH: Donovan lead ball for Davies, Casillas comes out to edge of box to end threat.

5TH: Donovan yellow card for challenge -- questionable decision by referee.

5TH: Casillas comes out of box to clear long ball for Davies.

2ND-3RD: Donovan foul leads to free kick, Howard taps high shot over crossbar, Howard punches out corner kick. Foul on Spain.

FIRST MINUTE: Onyewu clears dangerous box deep in the box.

PREGAME: Game-time temperature is 36 degrees. Yes, it's winter in South Africa. National anthems being played. Teams gather around a FIFA "Say No To Racism" banner.

USA LINEUP (4-4-2): Howard; Spector, Onyewu, DeMerit, Bocanegra; Dempsey, Bradley, Clark, Donovan; Altidore, Davies. (Bocanegra returns from injury and will play left back, a position he fills regularly for French club Rennes.)

SPAIN LINEUP (4-4-2): Casillas; Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Capdevila; Fabregas, Alonso, Xavi, Riera; Villa, Torres.

Join us for pregame, in-game and postgame discussion. I will provide updates throughout the match.

Ugh, Clark...

Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | June 24, 2009 1:40 PM | Report abuse

That is the strongest lineup Bob has, and it is definitely NOT a park-the-bus lineup. I wish I could watch the game!

Posted by: glfrazier | June 24, 2009 1:40 PM | Report abuse

So glad to see Davies out there. Altidore and he up top should give Donovan plenty to work with.

Posted by: Logan_Circle | June 24, 2009 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Like that lineup.

But... the over/under for Rico Clark getting carded is 15 minutes

Posted by: me_ahogo | June 24, 2009 1:44 PM | Report abuse

America...f*** yeah! I would still like to see Torres worked into the first team, but perhaps not against Spain after not playing for a while.

Posted by: EssEff | June 24, 2009 1:45 PM | Report abuse

Bocanegra at LB makes me think he'll stay back more, and allow for Bradley and Clark to play just a bit more offensively

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 24, 2009 1:45 PM | Report abuse

I like the lineup though I'm worried about cards. This is the same referee from US/Italy '06.

Posted by: ahelms10 | June 24, 2009 1:46 PM | Report abuse

been pining for this backline for a long time, hope it shows well

Posted by: joe_hill | June 24, 2009 1:47 PM | Report abuse

As long as Clark doesn't go around kicking anyone in the head, I guess I'll take him as long as DMB doesn't get on the field.

Posted by: figgy_va | June 24, 2009 1:52 PM | Report abuse

Oh jebus, there's no way we finish this match with 11 players. I mean, I like Bocanegra, but he's not exactly match-fit, and throwing him into the fire against Spain is a *bad* idea...especially when it all but guarantees you'll have to use one of your three subs on a defensive player, no matter what the late-game situation is. Of course, that assumes that Boca actually makes it that far without being tossed for dragging down Torres or Villa after they blow past him.

That said, my money is on Clark to get tossed first.

Posted by: EdTheRed | June 24, 2009 1:54 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe what it took, Ching getting injured, Beasley proving in one play what I've been saying for months, Klejstan showing no coping ability against Brazil, Hedjuk getting injured, Boca missing for a few days...

To finally see Demerit and Spector in the Backline, see Boca at left back, and to see a lineup that actually will attack forward with speed and aggression.

I still think Clark will be lost, hopefully Bob sees it at halftime and pulls him for Torres or Feilhaber.

Basically, Bob is the living emodiment of Churchill's always true assessment:
"Americans are a wonderful people- they always do the right thing, after exhausting every other possibility." He still Loves Klejstan, and despises Torres and Adu... But...

when we are losing badly, maybe we'll see one of them.

ps. Casey cannot play this match.

pss. I don't hate Ching, and I certainly don't hate Hedjuk for all he's given us, but anyone who think Ching would have given us what Davies did, and that Hedjuk would have made that cross aren't correct. These kids are the future, and more suited to todays game.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Probably our strongest and most balanced lineup. I am not a fan of Clark but there are not really another other options the way Bob likes to play. I have been telling all my friends that this should be our back line for about three months, so do not go and stink it up.

Hopefully Clark keeps his head.

If Jermaine Jones is the real deal I will be 10 times happy in 3 months.

Posted by: grubbsbl | June 24, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Does the line-up look like:

----------Howard----------
------Gooch---Demerit----
Spector--------------Bocanegra
-----Bradley---Clark-----
Dempsey-------------Donovan
----Altidore---Davies----

4-2-2-2

or

-------Bradley--------
Dempsey-------Clark
-------Donovan-------
--Altidore---Davies

4-1-2-1-2

Can Clark play on the left wing?

Posted by: PeteO1 | June 24, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Dempsey just hasn't done much in the midfield except turn the ball over...very little defensive support from him either. Hopefully Boca is at full speed, otherwise Spain will tear up the right flank.

Posted by: soccerman | June 24, 2009 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Ooh, shiny. Not as shiny as thinking Torres, Adu, and Cooper are thought of fondly by Bob Bradley, but very shiny nonetheless.

Kickoff: 2:30 p.m. ET.
Live TV: ESPN, Univision.
Taped TV: ESPN2, 11 p.m.
I signoff so that I can watch when I get home: 2:30 p.m. ET.

I can see Demerit/Onyewu having great game, but I think fouls outside of the box are going to kill us.

BTW, watching the US/Egypt game yesterday, I thought Demerit was great.

Posted by: Reignking | June 24, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Harkesy has given the benediction. Now, we play.

Posted by: fischy | June 24, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: sitruc | June 24, 2009 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Clearly we are more prepared and care more!!!

It looks chilly there.

Posted by: jrfath

And the rain has been so bad that teams haven't trained (much).

Enjoy it...guess I'll be disappearing now, waiting for the match at home tonight.

Posted by: Reignking | June 24, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

I would have liked to see benny f in for clark, otherwise lineup looks ok for now.

A very big-small victory would be keeping a clean sheet for the first 15 minutes, you know spain is going to heap the pressure on early.

Don't tread on me!

Posted by: The_Dude_Abides1 | June 24, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

I know Spain's anthem better than I know the US anthem.

Posted by: sitruc | June 24, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

What's with the big gloves Gooch is wearing?

Posted by: icehippo | June 24, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Ironic you would ask, icehippo, it's a cool 37 degrees there.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 24, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

How dumb is ESPN for putting Demerit at leftback?

{......................................................................}

This much.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

ESPN didn't, the Fifa world feed did.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 24, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Freaking bicycle kick ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 2:37 PM | Report abuse

We look dangerous. Beware the counter though.

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Who are these guys and what have they done with my soccer team?

They're finally looking like they want to score.

Posted by: RiverOtis | June 24, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

WE CAN WIN THIS GAME!!! kudos to bob bradley for making the choice to be aggressive with lineup and formation. props.

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Wow... for those the not watching... the US has had several close goals already... the bike kick and Dempsey's shot were near misses

Posted by: BurchFan4 | June 24, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

clint tracks back to slow down spain on the wing...and torres eventually misses dangerously for the spaniards! close call.

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

charlie davies has looked FANTASTIC.

what a difference in our performance so far! we are playing excellent defense, and then _quickly_ moving the ball forward with effective passes along the ground. I LOVE IT!!!

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

If the US plays like this against Mexico, they'll get that long awaited Azteca win.

Posted by: icehippo | June 24, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

couple cute south african girls... hello ladies! =)

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

clint dempsey makes an amazingly skillful and composed turn on the right touchline from a pass by spector. clint is looking like he played against chelsea last season in EPL where he scored twice....that's what we need.

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

i agree with harkes: altidore needs to just receive the ball and shoot when he is open. that's 2 shots he has passed up (the first was lost and eventually crossed in for davies bike.

good shot by donovan on the break, shoot that ball homie! donovan is best player on the field so far, by a good bit.

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

It's interesting to see the ways in which different observers describe the same thing:

Goff: Donovan's long shot in the 21st "harmless wide left."

ussoccer.com MatchTracker: "rips a shot that skips just wide!"

Posted by: christopher_a_metzler | June 24, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

so i'm not the only goofball toggling back and forth between two threads at work . . .

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

He could be the best US striker ever when its all said and done. he has physical gifts like no other to wear the US shirt.

Kid's only 19!?!

Wow.

Please keep your composure USA. They're gonna come at us.

banjax-

Jozy took off his shirt after scoring. Automatic yellow.

Posted by: CYork1 | June 24, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Thx, CYork1 - figured that was the case but I'm following here without the TV.

Posted by: banjax451 | June 24, 2009 3:12 PM | Report abuse

I dislike Donovan more each time I watch him play. Ugh. If you're going to fall down and pretend to be hurt, at least stay down and make a show of it!

Posted by: CYork1 | June 24, 2009 3:13 PM | Report abuse

John Harkes: They're doing a fair job, their 1-0 against Spain.

Aw, Jealous.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Yes - but Donovan made a great cross on that free play - Dempsey head got in the way

Posted by: Stevida | June 24, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

The blow-by-blow is much appreciated, Goff. A fine feature that should be continued for future important matches.

Posted by: iammrben1 | June 24, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

@CYork1: i totally disagree with you re: landon. he has been playing really well this tourny, and even more so today. my only issue with that little confrontation is he shouldn't have been messing with the ball. he already has a yellow, we definitely don't want him getting a red for gamesmanship...

Posted by: dfunkt | June 24, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Donovan did make a great cross. He tends to get about 1 of 5 where he wants them.

Posted by: CYork1 | June 24, 2009 3:13 PM | Report abuse

-------------------------------------------

Completely disagree. I have never been a huge LD fan, but he has an excellent tournement I think. Maybe not going forward, but he has worked tirelesly in the midfield and has been keen to not give the ball away.

That said, I think the whole USA team is getting a little dive happy...

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

So glad we came out confident and looking to actually play!

Posted by: the_slammer | June 24, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

donovan and davies have been excellent. however, too many turnovers/careless passes the last 10 minutes. need to stay poised and maintain possession at least for a little while...

Posted by: birdynumnum | June 24, 2009 3:22 PM | Report abuse

Solid first half but we cannot go on doing as much defending. We've been solid so far but am concerned about tired legs in the second half. Great shield by Altidore on the goal.

Posted by: agoldhammer | June 24, 2009 3:22 PM | Report abuse

Thoughts from the first half:
- We were playing great up to when we scored the goal, when all of a sudden we went into a defensive shell. Eventually Spain is going to break it.
- We're a bit lucky to not have conceded a goal yet.
- The yellow on Donovan was completely undeserved
- I know Jozy's excited for scoring a goal, but there's no reason to take the yellow.
- Donovan's dive in the corner after the foul was disgraceful. I thought US players didn't do that crap.
- Spain is not diving, its nice for a change.
- Onyewu is a monster, and that heel-flick clearance was ridiculous

Posted by: GoUnited | June 24, 2009 3:22 PM | Report abuse

oh, and even if they lose, i got my wish: THEY DIDN'T COME OUT SCARED. that's all i asked for.

Posted by: birdynumnum | June 24, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

So glad you are doing this - at work and it's just not the same. Can have the Post's website show up, but they don't like ESPN360 for some reason.

Will watch the "DVR'd" version when I get home, but can't keep from update watching while I'm here.

Posted by: peej_08 | June 24, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Wow....

Definitely the most excited I've been for a USA goal since I almost had aneurysm in Nurnberg for the Beasley to Dempsey effort vs. Ghana. And, with all that, it's nothing compared to how amazing it would have been if Davies had scored on that bicycle...would have been one of the most famous goals ever.

And, Gooch is playing out of his mind on defense. He will be able to name his price.

You've got to be kidding. Donovan has been everywhere thus far. You've got to be blind not to see how valuable he is to the USA.

Posted by: ashleybone | June 24, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

We led at the half against Italy, too. Come on, give it everything you have, guys.

Posted by: christopher_a_metzler | June 24, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

The only negatives -- too many avoidable turnovers, and we should be winning by more. If Donovan slots it to Davies on his right, instead of shooting, it's 2-0. Plus, the blown offside call.

Posted by: fischy | June 24, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

^^ Lets see how we play with 11 guys

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Onyewu and DeMerit coming up big in the middle. Spector had a few shaky moments in there. Spain bringing a ton of heat to Bocanegra.

Posted by: Logan_Circle | June 24, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

If anyone needs to retire I think it is Dempsey. I wish Howard would CATCH the dang ball instead of just knocking it away

Posted by: Stevida | June 24, 2009 3:34 PM | Report abuse

Would SOMEONE on the US team hold the ball for more than 1/2 a second???

Posted by: Stevida | June 24, 2009 3:39 PM | Report abuse

i'd like to bring on benny fielhaber for some possesion, maybe for dempsey?

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 3:39 PM | Report abuse

If we can't hold any possession this could get ugly very quickly.

Posted by: christopher_a_metzler | June 24, 2009 3:41 PM | Report abuse

I think I know what Bob told them at half time. He's going to try to bunker now. We are going down unless he subs in Torres or Feilhaber to actually make a pass.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 3:41 PM | Report abuse

can we bring in clyde simms? or how about namoff?

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm already running.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I was stunned we started Boca in his first match back from a hammy strain; that he's gone this long is amazing enough.

Posted by: jclinger | June 24, 2009 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Alright, Dempsey is done. Take him off. If this was his day, he would have scored already.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | June 24, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

This should be our back 4 for the WC. Solid all day long. Very impressed with Demerit

Feilhaber in for Davies

Posted by: Stevida | June 24, 2009 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Would've taken off Dempsey there instead of Davies.

Posted by: daandre3 | June 24, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Feilhaber a good choice here. DeMerit should NEVER (baring injury) not start for this team again.

agreed

Posted by: Stevida | June 24, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

^^^What could you possible have against DeMerit??

He has been a warrior today from the start.

Posted by: tphasbdp | June 24, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

The U.S. has done well getting around Alonso and Xabi when pressing. Here is hoping some possession can be maintained.

Posted by: virtueandvice | June 24, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Does ESPN know we're winning and the game isn't tied? Why the h would they try to jinx us by talking about overtime and tiebreaker procedures?

As I compliment DeMerit he clears another one off of Torres' foot.

It would be nice to see him click with another Mid on our squad the way he does with Danny Murphy at Fulham. Fantastic run in the last 6 minutes though!

WSJ had an article on this today saying this result would be (now is) 4th on a list of alltime US (not just soccer) upsets, behind only 1980 hockey, 1950 world cup and (?) 2008 Olympic volleyball (who knew?), and ahead of Portugal 2002.

Posted by: OWNTF | June 24, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

I honestly did not expect the US to win...but I am soooooooo glad they did (much love to Howard and Gouch). Keeping my fingers crossed that South Africa will produce another upset and send Brazil packing (although I still love that brat Robinho).

Wow...unbelievable. That was by far the best defensive effort I have EVER seen from any American team. You probably didn't hear his name too much and might have overlooked him but man of the match was Ricardo Clark BY FAR. And that says a lot because Boca, Gooch, and Demerit had stellar games considering all the pressure they had to deal with.

The workrate and effort have made our country proud. This is exactly what was lacking in the first two games. Every single time Spain shot, passed, or touched the ball, we had a player right with them to get a toe in on the ball. They didn't have a clear look on goal all game. Major credit to the guys.

Can't say enough about Rico Clark!

Let's celebrate but not go too over the top. Every win in a World Cup finals appearance for us should go over this one - especially Portugal and Mexico. Beating Mexico to go to the quarterfinal? Last 8 in the world?? Come on - that's enormous.

Take nothing away from today though - we beat a damn fine team. I'd put this with the win over Argentina in '95.

Posted by: Kev29 | June 24, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

Arturo -- Gracias. Sin duda, la victoria fue logrado. La tarjeta no fue logrado.

Awesome. We'll miss Bradley's cool, but Feilhaber might give us more possession against Brazil...which we'll need. We were able to beat Spain because our defenders dominated the box. The Spanish were reduced to short corners, because they would not challenge the US central defense. We won't have that advantage against Brazil.

what is the rule for appealing red cards?

Anyone who takes a second look would say that is not a red card!!!!

I think that ref hates us, as Conor Casey was clearly onside a moment before the worst red card I have ever seen in my life.

Overall, great win today!!!

Posted by: grubbsbl | June 24, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

It is an amazing upset. Yes, it wasn't the World Cup, but it wasn't as if we caught a lesser Spanish side, or a disinterested one. Even winning the Confederations Cup can't compare to wins in the World Cup, but given the opponent and the setting, this has to rank as one of the best USA efforts ever.

Why did we win? A defense that gave everything they had, throwing themselves all over the field -- in contrast with a Spanish defense that did not play with the same level of urgency. And, whatever they say about Casillas being the best goalie in the world, Tim Howard the best goalie tonight.

Posted by: fischy | June 24, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: grubbsbl | June 24, 2009 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Just, wow. That had to be one of the most amazing displays of defensive soccer I've ever seen. Both Onyewu and DeMerit were insane in central defense. Hell, even Landon Donovan was active in the defensive box.

This is a win that shocks the world, and says "see? Americans CAN play football at the highest levels."

Posted by: SportzNut21 | June 24, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

@grubbsbl -- I agree about the officiating. The USA strikers got no respect. I think they were called offside 3 times on perfectly timed runs. I think the replays showed each call was wrong. The score might have been very lopsided, if the linesmen did a better job.

There were other examples -- the foul that wasn't called when Puyol ran over Donovan, leading to a shot by Villa -- Demerit was shown screaming about the non-call. The red call against Bradley, even though he was trying to pull out of the tackle.

Posted by: fischy | June 24, 2009 4:44 PM | Report abuse

1) U.S. Hockey vs. Soviet Union - 1980

2) U.S. Soccer vs. Spain - 2009

3) Rebels vs. Death Star - 1977

Great game. First we came off confident at the start. We had 3 quality shots on goal very early on. And Jozy, he was strong! Scoring a goal while getting strangled!

Props to the backline, Gooch, JayD, and Clark!

There were some calls that Spain did not get either. Donovan probably should have been called for a penalty. Maybe, it evens out....

thoughts:
---------
1) much respect to bob bradley for having the courage to not be scared. he stuck with the game plan from egypt and it worked again. he even made a couple tactical substitutions late with casey (ugh, but whatever) and bornstein. i am seeing a lot of improvment with heart, gameplan, linups, and substitutions. bob gets 9/10.
2) that was not even a foul on bradley. he won the ball! his studs were not up, it was not late. it was a tough tackle and that is all. we are going to have a hard time next game without him, that is for sure. fifa needs to investigate the referring after this tournament, seriously.
3) our defense was HUGE. gooch: 10/10. demerit: 10/10. spector and bocanegra: 9/10. so much guts and glory! sliding all around (but not stupidly!) blocking shots! anything they didn't block howard took care of (howard 8.5/10 great stops and dealing with crosses, but some poor distributions at times).
4) we need to ALWAYS play with 2 strikers. we are a barely mediocre team with single target striker, but can beat anyone with 2 and a fire in our bellies.
5) feilhaber is amazing. the way he holds the ball, composed and skillfull...its what we need on the field all the time i think. i think it was pique he dispatched with ease on the touchline and the crowd reacted with ecstasy, as did i. it was his dribbling through the last third that did 90% of the work to setup the last goal. landon *almost* messed it up, but clint was bloodthirsty and took advantage of ramos' ill-conceived cuteness.

if we can play like this next game we will beat brazil handily i think. spain is a better offensive team than brazil and they also have a better defense.

Is anyone else out there worried about how long a heart can beat at like 20938 beats per minute before it just stops?

Just walked back into work after heading to a bar to see the 2nd half (ESPN360 could have made a bunch of money today if it didn't limit access to a subset of internet providers...what crap) Anyway, MOTM has to be Gooch. His ability to clear the ball and take up space was key to stop Spain's attack. While they had possession 70% of the time, I have to say only one or two shoots really got my heart rate up.

My ratings:
Howard 8.5 - Didn't make any "HOLY COW!" saves, but he got tested a lot, was very strong on crosses and was all around VERY solid.
Spector 7.5 - Poor crosses, but played very well overall defensively.
DeMerit 9.5 - The guy was unbelievable today. MOTM for me. Why is not playing top-flight football?
Onyewu 9 - He was a monster again today, and he's probably gonna be rewarded with a fat contract this summer.
Bocanegra 7 - Played pretty well considering he was out injured for a bit, but you could tell that he wasn't 100%
Clark 8.5 - Was great all night long. Very clean, strong tackles. Made a couple bad balls in the offensive third, but still had a great game.
Bradley 5 - This was by far his worst game of the tournament. Besides getting red carded (which was definitely not merited), he was invisible for much of the game and he rarely got forward.
Dempsey 7.5 - By far his best game of the tournament. Unlike previous games where he looked disinterested for most of the game, he left everything on the field today, and as a result was completely gassed at the end.
Donovan 9 - Was brilliant again today. The guy was everywhere on the field and seemed to inspire the team. I just wish he wouldn't do those unclassy dives.
Davies 8 - He brought great energy to the game and seems to be a good partner to complement Altidore.
Altidore 6.5 - Other than the goal, he didn't do much. He clearly still has a lot to learn, and needs to improve on holding the ball. His lack of playing time in Europe is evident; he looked dead in the later stages of the second half.

Subs:
Feilhaber 8 - This guy brings things to the table that no other American has. He is so calm on the ball and his vision and passing are superb. His quality showed on the field today.
Casey 4 - This guy should not play for the national team again unless he can show that he wants to be there. He played lazily and was jogging on the field.
Bornstein NR - Didn't see enough of him to give him a rating really.

OKay, not to quibble but when you beat the #1 2-0 in a meaningful game, nobody gets a 4. This doesn't mean everybody gets a 9, but nobody out there, not even conor casey gave a 4 performance. If one of them had we wouldn't have won 2-0. It's just not possible.

Joel you have it backwards, its your internet provider that is blocking ESPN360. I have a VZW account so I tunnel in from any other location with that user.

Comcast and other providers that also provide TV see it as a rival to their tv service. also i think it might cost the provider like a few cents per subscriber that uses it.
