Matchnight #15: United-Sounders

We've reached the halfway point of D.C. United's league calendar, a mid-week stop in Seattle with an opportunity for the club to extend its Eastern Conference lead over second-place Chicago (no league games this week) to four points. The last time United dropped by Qwest Field was almost three years ago, when it played Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw before a nearly full house. DCU goalkeeper Josh Wicks has played in this fine city several times, with Vancouver and Portland in USL1.

Tonight's kickoff: 10:30 p.m. ET.
TV: ESPN2 (pregame show begins at 10).

A few tidbits.....

*I am awaiting official word from the Canadian federation about its Gold Cup roster and the inclusion of DCU defender Dejan Jakovic, who said a few weeks ago that he's expecting a call-up. With a gap in the schedule, DCU anticipates him joining the Canadian squad next week. He would miss as many as three league matches and perhaps two U.S. Open Cup games.

*As expected, DCU has begun selling tickets for seats in FedEx Field's upper deck for the Real Madrid friendly on Aug. 9. Prices are $60-$80. The lower bowl is almost sold out. Overall, more than 24,000 tickets have been sold.

Back later with the DCU lineup and subs.

DCU LINEUP: Wicks; Namoff, Jakovic, Burch; Pontius, Simms, Jacobson, Fred, Wallace; Quaranta, Emilio. Subs: Kocic, John, Janicki, Gomez, Olsen, Khumalo, N'Silu. Here But Not in Uniform: McTavish, Barklage. Not Here: Crayton, Moreno, Peters, DiRaimondo.

You've come to the ultimate destination for pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts. Enjoy.

Gems from the Seattle press pre-match coverage.

Times: "[Emilio will] likely find himself paired with Moreno at forward Wednesday."

http://mynorthwest.stats.com/mls/preview.asp?g=2009061725

Um, no, I don't think Moreno even traveled!

PI (link): "D.C.’s Rodney Harris is second in MLS with 28 fouls committed."

http://www.thenewstribune.com/1043/story/781323.html

Yeah, United doesn't even have a Harris on the roster. Try Simms.

Thank god United has Goff to bring some credible journalism.

"We've reached the halfway point of D.C. United's league calendar"

It's like the summer solstice -- as though today were the longest day of the year, but each day hereafter gets dark just a little bit earlier. Kinda sad, really.

Or... Rodney Wallace ;)

I didn't even realize Wallace had so many fouls!

Posted by: Reignking | June 17, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Jacobson is a bit of a surprise, but I guess Tommy doesn't want to risk Olsen on the turf. He could sub in Gomez at some point; move Fred to a wing; and move Wallace inside where he has played well recently.

If Jacovic is absent for as long as Goff suggests it's a good thing Janicki is well rested!

Posted by: b18bolo | June 17, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I'm fine with this, as I prefer Fred in the middle. We'll see whether or not I learn to trust Jacobson in about an hour.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 17, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

The Jacobson experiment must end. He just isn't a d mid. He should be a center back in a 4 man back line. I can't believe Barklage and/or McTavish aren't in uniform, but then who else would we bench?

And why isn't Gomez given the start after his most complete game?

Posted by: delantero | June 17, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Maybe tonight is the night when #8 puts that 35 yard cannon blast on frame! Come one boys, wipe that stupid smirk off Keller's face tonight!
Vamos United!
A little bummed we won't see Benny starting, maybe he'll super sub in and get the Swede's panties wound up so tight he whines his way right out of the game!
Headed over to a neighbor's to watch on the big screen, get your popcorn ready!

It's baseball. It can't be enjoyed. It can only be watched while totally pissed or in act of becoming so . .

Posted by: delantero | June 17, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Losing Jacovic for that long is a pain, but good for the kid getting some caps (hey, we have a national team defender! Who saw that coming?)

Um, guy running onto the field! Stop delaying this game, already. I can't believe I am watching a cws game.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 17, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

With that home run, the game is going to go 25 innnings, preempting the entire soccer game

Posted by: amorris525 | June 17, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

If you smoke some ganja, it is possible baseball can be enjoyed. But F*ck; 3-3. Arkansas just tied it in the 9th. Looks like the pregame show is out the window. Hopefully we'll catch the game on time though.

CRAP. Someone better win this thing in the next 14 minutes. Isn't this what ESPNU is for? God knows this would be better than watching that US / Italy game again.

Posted by: TheOtherRK | June 17, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

With two games in four days and this one being on turf, I'm not totally shocked to not see Gomez in the starting 11. If they need him, figure him to come in early in the second half, and still be fresh for the cRapids.

Posted by: SonicDeathMonkey | June 17, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

I think kickoff is set for 10:38, NOT 10:30. That gives an extra 8 mins.

And, of course, this is awful for mls. Here you have the two teams playing the most attractive soccer in the league, in a sold out stadium, and no one's gonna see it. (well we'll still be here, but those people who might stumble onto it, not likely.)

Go hoos. 1-2 no outs. The razorbacks' catcher must be an mls fan after that throw- poor kid. Oh look, another five minute pitching change.

And of course i pay for DK and still can't watch it. I'd pay double for DK if i could see every game (including US Open games). I wish wish wish wish ESPN would lose the MLS rights! That second goal is totally on Jakovic. He is completely out of position on that play. Wicks can do nothing about it and it's just an unfortunate deflection off Burch.

2-1 at halftime. Pontius with a nice goal. Seattle scores 2 in the last 5 minutes or so of the half, the second an own goal on Burch with some bad defending on our part, particularly Jacobson who didn't follow Jaqua on his run. Jacobson's been pretty invisible I would sub him.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 18, 2009 12:05 AM | Report abuse

To recap, great volley by Pontius for 1-0 lead, amazing 30-yard shot by Alonso to upper right corner for 1-1, Jaqua's shot takes an unlucky deflection off Burch for an own goal just before the half, United defense cracking after the break and Montero takes advantage of Burch's bumbling effort to make it 3-1. Gomez responds from 18 yards in the 63rd. Despite the scoreline, Wicks has made several superb saves.

Posted by: Steve Goff | June 18, 2009 12:05 AM | Report abuse

ESPN is a monster--they are worse than the government, a monopoly who does what they want when they want to and the public is powerless to do a da*n thing about it.

Soccer is an after thought to them and sadly no matter how much we complain, protest, threaten, etc., they would do it again in a heartbeat tomorrow.

The worst part is that a) they taunt us by the broadcasters saying "oh, what a game this has been" and b) the ratings for the replay garbage they were showing on ESPN U and Classic were probably higher than dumping that to protect the game.

I hate to say it, but its that grim.

And if he gets behind it, he's got a lot more power behind him that us emailing the complaint hotline.

Here's a couple of things:

- one point is probably more than we deserved

- I hope the Sounders get punished for a fan throwing a bottle at Josh Wicks

- Marc Burch better be on the bench this Saturday at Colorado. Let's go ultra-defensive and play four in the back. John - Janicki - Jakovic - Namoff

Youre right I mean foul, i got a little carried away...lol but for GOMITO it would have been as if it were a PK

Posted by: Norteno4life | June 18, 2009 12:41 AM | Report abuse

Tino's "foul" wasn't a pk. If it was a "foul" then he should have earned it more as the ball was likely headed to the covering back. Maybe a direct kick outside, but definitely not a pk.

Posted by: delantero | June 18, 2009 12:41 AM | Report abuse

Hard to know how to feel about this game. The point is good, but....

The defense played crappy. Jakovic and Burch were chasing after the Sounders most of the game. Simms looked diffident. Even Namoff gave away too many balls. Not sure what Limarzi means about Emilio playing well. Maybe it was the little screen I watched for an hour, but all I saw out of him were turnovers. The star, again, was Wicks. Other than Wicks, and maybe Tino, Pontius and Gomez, no one acquitted themselves well.

Given how badly the team was outplayed, the point looks great. Still, I don't understand the referee waiving off that clear takedown of Quaranta in the final minutes. The defender clearly intentionally fouled him just before Tino crossed into the box. It should have been a free kick, even if Tino went down too easily. Maybe the ref thought the foul was in the box and didn't want to give a penalty -- in which case, he was wrong on both counts.

Posted by: fischy | June 18, 2009 12:42 AM | Report abuse

I love how this team can take it into that environment, go down two, and come right back. At 3-1, the whole stadium was screaming "SEATTLE (left side), SOUNDERS (right side)."

And we fought for the point. Good stuff.

Posted by: delantero | June 18, 2009 12:43 AM | Report abuse

other things we have learned:

* Jacobson - eh, not so much
* Emilio - most likely on the downslope of his career
* Pontius - possible future MVP
* 3 in the back - they better play well
* Seattle has some very nice attacking players
* Goalies - who the hell knows?

Posted by: dimesmakedollars | June 18, 2009 12:44 AM | Report abuse

happy for the point...

but I need to ask, where was the team I saw on Saturday?

what the frick!

Posted by: bonghits4gomez | June 18, 2009 12:44 AM | Report abuse

Now that's was the Gomez I know. He was coming on bit by bit, but he was man on the scene tonight. He wanted this game, he loved it and he took his goal well. Sad thing about his goal, was that it overshadowed the beautiful interplay that created it. Gomez and Pontius did the business tonight.

Burch not so much.

Wicks was moster huge tonight. That was no easy atmosphere to play in. I think this game proves that he's clearly our number 1 (up until we see Crayton's replacement).

VAMOS UNITED...a point well stolen, earned, or TAKEN? Let the debate begin.

Posted by: Kosh2 | June 18, 2009 12:46 AM | Report abuse

Mostly, though, I'm still furious at ESPN. They've got a zillion channels. They couldn't just decide to shift the game over to ESPN News, until the baseball game ended? They were so busy with the scroll telling us the game would follow -- why not just tell us to switch channels? The silliness about replaying the game in its entirety at 1 am?? Are they kidding?

A great advertisement for MLS? Maybe a great advertisement for MLS to create their own network as the other sports have done. And a really crappy public relations move by ESPN towards soccer fans. I'm beginning to change my mind about FSC's growing collection of soccer broadcasting deals. ESPN can kiss my hairy ___....

Road game 20000 miles away, 2 defensive errors to give seattle there goals, very intense stadium, fake grass, down by 2 goals, other than the 3 points what else would you want from your team. Besides Seattle is a very good team at home, its on the road that they struggle. Its hard not to be proud of the fight back, what is evident is that we need to replace burch, and Dejan just had an off day. Maybe Tommy needs to tell him that we have enough offensive players, we dont need him trying to be the playmaker

Posted by: Norteno4life | June 18, 2009 12:50 AM | Report abuse

what is evident is that we need to replace burch, and Dejan just had an off day
-----------------------------------------------

Nice logic. Dejan was awful. If he didn't have the speed to recover from his errors, the Sounders would've won. and, as far as that goes, Burch made a few nice saving tackles, too.

"VAMOS UNITED...a point well stolen, earned, or TAKEN? Let the debate begin."

Quaranta was pulled down outside the box with NO CALL.
On a seperate occasion, I kind of liked when Jakovic was defnding one on one with a forward in the box towards the end and when it went out of bounds on a slide tackle he immediately started yelling that he got the ball and not the defender. Jakovic was expecting another terrible penalty call at the end of the game-lol! The announcer thought he was yelling for a goal kick- ha, what do the announcers know?

So, if you have my problem -- ESPN and ESPN2 are knocked off the air -- so, you can't watch the much-touted replay of tonight's United-Sounders game. However, there is good news: ESPN News is still on the air, so you can watch the same stories repeated every half hour, and ESPNU is re-airing the Virginia-Arkansas baseball game -- so you watch that and get reminders about the delayed coverage of the soccer match.

fischy, you've just described hell for me. I thought I'd already been there earlier this evening. I'm going to have a hard time sleeping tonight....

That sucks fischy! Where do you live and why is ESPN and ESPN2 knocked off the air at 1 am?

Luci and N'Silu need to change their hair up, cuz no one seems to be able to tell them apart.

@redskinsux -- In Montgomery County -- it might just be my boxes, but Verizon hasn't been able to fix it.

No, the announcers just suck. They even mixed up Simms with Emilio, too.

Alonso's strike was the definition of a golazo. Wow.

OK -- they finally confirmed -- those channels are experiencing some outage in my area. I'm going to bed....

Sorry, Fischy. Rough night for TV and soccer fans.

This could officially be the greatest game in MLS history, and nobody is watching.

Obviously someone wasn't AT the DC/Revolution shoot-out Eastern Conference Championship game a few years back.
