Moreno Sidelined

D.C. United captain Jaime Moreno will miss both league matches this week because of a hamstring injury, club officials confirmed today. Moreno, MLS's career scoring leader, was injured late in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 victory over Chicago at RFK Stadium. He will not accompany the club to Seattle for Wednesday's game against the expansion Sounders and will also miss Saturday's match at Colorado.

With Luciano Emilio returning from suspension and a two-week break from league play approaching, United was not going to risk further injury to Moreno.

Emilio and Moreno lead the team with five goals apiece.

Meantime, midfielder Ben Olsen, who has missed four league matches with a hamstring injury, has been included on the travel roster.

With Moreno out, who would you like to see join Emilio on the frontline?

Emilio is going to be thirsty for goals this week. I have a feeling he is going to prove to DC fans and his team that he is a goal scorer - and to make up for last week's water bottle incident. I would like to keep the same formation we had against Chicago - but instead of Moreno - have Emilio up to with Santino. Also, instead of Fred on the left - put in Khumalo - his speed would be great to have on the flank.

uh huh. can't think about this. still focused on USA-Italy. watching the Italian Rai2 feed and -- stunningly -- all the Italian commenters and even the federation rep are praising the USA's solid team.

I say

Emilio Pontius
Wallace Fred Gomez Santino
Simms
Burch Jakovic Namoff
Wicks

Fred needs to be in the middle when he's on the field. With the quick turnaround, Gomez is unlikely to go the distance in the first game. I think we start the game with Fred on the bench, but bring him in early in the 2nd half for Gomez. Save Benny for late in the game, as well, to make sure he's not too worn out to start on the weekend.

Wicks
Namoff - Jakovic - Burch
Simms - Wallace
Pontius - Gomez - Quaranta
Khumalu - Emilio

N'Silu baby. Get them goals, Ange!

Give N'Silu a chance up front, as the target man to win headers for Emilio. Khumalo would be a good impact substitute, to run at tired defenders.

I knew that "D" license course would come in handy one day.

First we lose to Italy, now we lose to injury? Ah, this is going to be fun. But DC has enough weapons. I want to see:

--------------Wicks-------------
---Namoff----Jakovic----Burch---
-------Simms--------Olsen-------
Pontius---------------------Fred
-------------Gomez--------------
-----N'Silu----------Emilio-----

I'll add another voice to the crowd clamoring for some Ange up top!

-------------------------------

Giusseppe Rossi. Failing that -- either Pontius (please stop the silliness calling him "Party Boy") or Khumalo. Pontius should play, maybe he should spell Fred in the midfield. Actually, it might even be interesting to see Fred as an attacker -- though he has missed some sitters, he might open up the attack some.

I say, lets have Party Boy up front.

Please people, can we not mention Rossi on the DCU thread today? Please?

Posted by: kacd | June 15, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Yes please. Can we forget about that jersey slob already? Dude is gone! This really is more ridiculous than the whining about Gomez in DCU threads last season. At least those were on topic...? Sorry Fischy, but I couldn't care less about Jersey TRash that never wanted anything to do with the US. Hope someone breaks his leg or at the very least gives him a need for stitches. Yeah, I'm a jerk, but I'm sick of this guy.

Tino or Party up front or on the right. Take your pick.

I would like to see Fred in the front line. He knows what to do with the ball when it comes in - score.

There was a time when the title and tone of this thread would have worried me greatly. No, with Pontius, Q, 1/2 a Gomez, Emilio, Wallace, Fred....I don't think DCU takes a big hit with Moreno out.
His skill and understanding will be missed but, not like in recent past.
So many options and they mostly all seem to be working right now.

Wicks
Namoff Jakovic Burch
Simms Wallace
Quaranta Fred
Gomez
Pontius
Emilio

If/when Gomez tires, slide Fred over into Gomez's spot, slide Wallace to the flank, and bring in Olsen.

Good news for Emilio is that we are one less player that he might otherwise have had to share playing time with, meaning even better news for water bottles everywhere.
