Gold Cup: USA-Grenada
What do we know about the Spice Boyz, the USA's opening opponent in Group B play of the Gold Cup at Qwest Field in Seattle this evening?
They're making their first Gold Cup appearance and are the least-populated nation (90,000) to ever qualify for the tournament. English Coach Tommy Taylor won the FA Cup as a West Ham defender in 1975, played more than 500 games for the Hammers and Leyton Orient, and later coached numerous clubs. In the FIFA rankings, Grenada has passed Canada, El Salvador and Guatemala within CONCACAF and sliced its standing in half in just two years (from 176 to 88). The handful of foreign-based players include midfielder Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution, MLS) and forward Jason Roberts (Blackburn Rovers, Premier League).
TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel, Telefutura.
The USA lineup in a bit.
USA: Perkins; Cherundolo, Marshall, Goodson, Pearce; Holden, Pause, Beckerman, Rogers; Davies, Adu. Subs: Robles, Parkhurst, Heaps, Cooper, Quaranta, Evans, Arnaud.
As usual, your comments and suggestions are welcome here.

Am I the only one who is sad that Pearce is the best we can do?
As most of you know, I've put a lot of faith in Freddy. But I think he is exactly the type of player we need to integrate, along with Torres.
I also hope Holden can get in there and seize a spot for South Africa.
Perkins! Go man, go!

Shaun, you've come to the right place to ask.
Our domestic season runs from April to November. Our best teams could hang in the Championship, and our worst would be close to promotion in League 1, if you ask me. If you're in the States, right now two of the best teams in our MLS are playing on ESPN2 right now.
With our lineup tonight, I'm sure you've heard the hype around Adu, Davies, the forward, showed very well for himself in the recent Confed Cup, and I personally am high on Robbie Rogers. Our right back, Steve Cherundolo, is a veteran with years of experience in the Bundesliga.
Hope that helps, feel free to hang around.

Goff are you in Seattle or Columbus tonight? or on the mall watching the fireworks?

RIP, Billy Mays.
And Steve McNair, for that matter.
Now, happier times. Adu getting a start, Rogers and Holden tearing up the seams, us having a white guy with bigger dreads bigger than anything Grenada with throw out...

WTF? Is anyone else's Telefutura a black blank screen?
Posted by: DadRyan | July 4, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse
No problems here, other than FSC being nothing but a blur.
YEAH!!! EARLY GOALS ARE FUN!!! ROBBIE TO FREDDY!!!

Adu as a forward with Davies? I'm curious and excited to see how this pair work together.

Grenada is not playing Joseph or Roberts? We should beat them handily then, even without our "A" team.
Thx,
Jay!

There goes Adu.

Luckily the good ol' Rojadirecta is working, but two of my normal Spanish speaking channels are blank screens. It's weird as I swear they were both working an hour ago.
NO FSC for me. Have they announced an attendance in Seattle yet? Looks pretty empty.

I think one thing we can take from this game so far, is that whatever the US program brings, it will bring more individual foot skill.
Now, if we could just make playing at the youth level less expensive, or free.
And my Other favorite scores.

These youngsters are making a case for a possible dangerous 4-3-3 formation a few years from now. We've got a surplus of central midfielders, mostly defensive minded, but some good creative ones, coupled with speedy, skilled wingers, and Altidore, Davies, or whatever big man can actually score for us.
I know, a bit premature, as this is only Greneda, but you can't deny this is seriously a possibility, especially if some of our midfielders get experience in Europe.

Best story or worst story here in England, depends on which way you look at it. Man Utd have signed sick note Owen, former Liverpool and England star from 'oh dear, your now in the Championship' Newcastle. Let us be honest here, shall we!. Ronaldo was class,Teves was class and Owen, yeah right (he was good once). The Liverpool fans are sure to love that one, not.

Yeah, Telefutura's blanked out for me. And I don't get FSC. I have Comcast in Montgomery County.
My ESPN2HD wasn't working for DCU and my ESPN2 regular went to commercial several times.

I know we "joke" about Freddy's age a lot, but when you see close ups of him, he really doesn't look any older than 20 in his face.

On a nicer note: world football games are all on espn and DC United v Real Madrid is on FSC.

5-4-1 system is a good one when your team are playing away, especially if it is against one of the top sides. It is the classic playing for a draw system, with the chance of grabbing a possible one goal to nil victory.

I wouldn't be surprised for Tino to get the start in place of Holden against Honduras

Solid game for Goodson...but the defense never really hasn't been tested. Rogers looks to be man of the match.

Ah the memories...Adu hits another shot 10 feet over the bar from 25 yards out.

DCUF - this maybe like the Henrik Larsson loan a few years back. They can always use an able bodied sub for Rooney, et al.

@juan-john
It might even be worse against Haiti. Our C team should be able to cruise to the semi-finals at least. Are most of the other top sides (costa rica, Mexico, etc.) fielding their best sides?

Tino should get minutes vs. Honduras, a la Brad Evans on his home pitch tonight.
If not, I'm going back to that Fire Bob Bradley Now! site and complaining in the comment boards.

I don't know what's wrong with FSC. I think they are having problems because the Home Depot Center is so far away from their studios.

Good first match and the starting line-up clearly indicates who BB trusts the most in this group. Great ball and player movement created lots of chances although only 12 shots were taken. Absolutely love Goodson and Marshall in the middle. They dominated to a point that both Pearce and Dolo had no defensive responsiblities and joined the attack. I hope Goodson's knee is okay for Honduras.
Beckerman, Rogers & Holden also stode out.
Prdicted line-up for Honduras:
Robles
Dolo Goodson Marshall Pearce
Beckerman Pause
Quananta Cooper Rogers

Other than scoring a sitter, i dont think freddy did much. It doesnt look like he can replace anyone on the starting roster. I was expecting more from him considering the competition. How did granada qualify for this cup? Better yet how are they ranked above canada and honduras? Interesting rankings Fifa has come up with. Good win for the MNT. The honduras game should be great.

DCUnitedfootball- your not the only one who can't understand why Man Utd signed owen!,to be honest with you,it is a huge gamble. Newcastle probably needed the cash and Owen did not fancy playing in the championship. As you state, time will tell.

When does your season start, because ours is weeks away and i just hate the close season. As a Plymouth Argyle supporter,i await the coming Championship with interest,as Argyle have been been taken over by local and international consortium types. What standard are the American sides compared to the English sides( Premiership/Championship),what league could the US sides hold their own in over here etc, what players are there to watch out for in the US.
