Hope Panama version of Heaps shows up and not a repeat of the Haiti match

A kickoff at 6 PM local time? Don't they know that we east coasters work and then have to sit in traffic for two hours before reaching home? But I guess everyone in Seattle is watching.

West Coasters are still at work. Sounds like this start time sucks for everyone.

Posted by: CACuzcatlan | July 23, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, Heaps and Pause should NEVER be wearing a USMNT jersey that doesn't have somebody else's name on the back.

I predict 3-1 Yanks...these guys are getting used to playing together.

There's no reason for pause to be there. Holden should move over and have Tino on the wing. Bad call by Bradley.

@I-270Exit1:

Watching?! That's just your east coast bias talking. Everyone in Seattle skived off work early to go to the game. ;)

Good start for US to open 2nd half. Like to see some of those shots go in though...

Posted by: tfshea | July 23, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Goodson pulled down in the box, as he was about to volley in a goal. That was far more deserving a penalty call than Rogers being knocked off the ball.

I've noticed that some of the USA players are too quick to try to shoot with their head, even thought they have the time and space to let it come down to their feet. Arnaud in the first half, and Holden a couple of minutes ago.

i have a "man-crush" on holden. there i said it. some how, some way, he needs to be included on the A-team....

Posted by: birdynumnum | July 23, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

The more I see Brian Ching play, the more impressed I am. That second goal was exactly what you want the holding forward to do, plus he added a little spice with the back heel to Holden. He also delivered a brilliant return pass to Quaranta that should have been an easy goal for Tino, but Tino didn't run out the play.

If Holden had been sharper with his return pass to Ching, Ching would have a goal of his own to celebrate. Holden was good, but Ching was man-of-the-match, for me.

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Honestly, when I read those comments dissing Ching, I wonder what game you were all watching...

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Just to be clear -- the bad return pass form Holden to Ching was not his strong pass to Cooper. I was referring to the one earlier, where the FSC announcers claimed Ching couldn't get his feet down. Ching had a 1v1 with the goalie, if Holden's pass is farther upfield. Ching was heroic out there. MOTM.

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of the FSC announcers, I found it irksome to hear them repeatedly refer to the Honduran goalie as "Escobar". His name is "Escober".

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

I don't think that Ching played badly, and, in fact, I like the guy quite a bit. He just can't seem to score in situations where effective forwards do [note: I didn't DVR tonight, so I can't go back and give you the minute and second of his misses, but I had the thought more than once that he missed, or fell down, unbelievably]

Posted by: sec133row5 | July 23, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Concur with 'sec133row5' re Ching's performance. I've always admired his work ethic but feel he should have scored more in the past & a time or two tonight also.

Posted by: tfshea | July 23, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Ching snapped a header or two wide. They were great chances, though. If he had put them on net, they were goals. Sharply hit headers that had the goalie beat.

He also had a great play near the end of the first half, where he took the ball in the middle of the defense, with no help and took a shot I thought would have no chance, In fact, it was just deflected by a Honduran defender and ricocheted off the top of the crossbar. Should have been a corner kick, but the refs thought that Ching just missed the shot. Maybe you did, too. He didn't miss. It was a remarkable effort that probably would have gone in but for the barest deflection. Would have been a wonder goal. I say again that I think Ching was the best player out there tonight.

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

while reading through these comments, I wondered if we were watching the same game. ching was brilliant. fischy beat me to posting (props to you pal). whenever i hear about ching, "doing the dirty work, holding and distributing, etc" I tend to roll my eyes, but today it came through loud and clear. USA in the finals, thanks to ching.

now i need to read the earlier threads so I can understand the jokes being made by the rest of you.

Posted by: troy6 | July 23, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

This squad certainly won't scare anyone on paper, but I do see why Bradley has gone with this lineup. The physical commitment and mental grit can not be disputed.

I also should say that while I don't agree with every call the referee made tonight, he's my new favorite CONCACAF referee. I just felt like he had control of the match the whole way and we saw no amount of argy-bargy much less a fracas.

Let's see if the next ref for Mex - CR is as in control as this man was.

Posted by: JkR- | July 23, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

I saw the deflection. And I saw all the fouls he earned by being in the right place. And I saw him get stepped on by defenders and try to lay off passes to would-be open teammates. But he didn't score, and there were more than a handful of times I thought he could have. All I'm saying -- really, *all* -- is that he struggles to score even when he gets himself in fabulous positions.

Posted by: sec133row5 | July 23, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I was surprised that Santino came in for Rogers. I thought Rogers was quite a nuisance to the Honduras defense and was creating chances. Arnaud seemed the more obvious choice at that point.

Not Beckerman's best game of this tournament, but he seems to have a real presence in the midfield.

Perkins is going to South Africa, if you ask me. Same with Heath Pearce.

Marshall has also put himself in a good position, but may lose out to sheer numbers at CB.

Perkins v Guzan - another example of why it is better to be playing on a "lower" level team than be on the bench at a "higher" level team

Posted by: emanon13 | July 23, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I think it's Howard a clear #1, and then Perkins and Guzan, flip a coin.

I love Marcus Hahnemann but don't see the point of taking him as a #3. Unless he has a superb season with Wolves, but he may come out of that shell-shocked.

Posted by: JkR- | July 23, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

my favorite part of this game was that hilarious dive by costly. which he rounded off with the classic "i refuse to stand up and take my yellow card" sulk. just world class stuff.

Posted by: stairs | July 23, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Anybody still watching FSC? The USL "breakaway" show?

A Gio Savaresi sighting....

I used to love that guy. He's coaching a PDL side, mysteriously called the Brooklyn Knights even though they play in Queens. He had a great little interview about the field, which goes back to the '20s...and then gave the worst motivational speech I've heard from a coach. You'd think he would have learned more English living here for more than 15 years.

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Yay we beat the Honduran B team. Not that I'm not happy about it - it was a very impressive performance. But before you go having these guys starting in WC2010, keep in mind the opposition throughout.

Ching had BETTER shine against this stuff, and he was okay tonight..."brilliant" is a bit of a stretch. My problem with Ching overall is that, while I agree that he does "the little things" you need - he doesn't do any of the "big things". He's like McBride in 50% of his game - heart, toughness - but McBride did the big things also. Against top int'l competition you can't waste field space on someone like Ching. It's nothing against him, just the facts. It's also why he'd never make it in a top Euro league.

All that said, some of these guys have been impressive. I really like what Holden brought, and I was impressed by Goodson as well. Perkins was solid, I'd be interested to see how he'd do against someone's A team besides Grenada, but the overseas game seems to have truly helped him. Marshall was good too. And Pearce I think looks like the most experienced guy on the field.

The negatives: Nothing from Beckerman tonight, I think his tournament has been average. Rogers has been steadily regressing, he was decent but nothing special. I was disappointed in Arnaud tonight too - he'd put together some good games, but seemed off against the big H.

Posted by: duck95 | July 23, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Anti-MotM = Arnaud. Ugh, call me a homer, but let Tino run up front off of Ching. So he's not a 100% striker. I'd be willing to bet the team would get some better centering passes and crosses from Tino.

Posted by: freeholdsouth | July 23, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Duck95 please don't tell me your opinion and call it the facts. Maybe it's just semantics, but in a blog comment that's all we have.

Posted by: JkR- | July 23, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

@JkR -- I was equally surprised to see Rogers coming off. I thought Arnaud was the obvious choice, even before he got his yellow card.

I can't say enough how impressive Perkins has been in this tournament. If he'd played like that for United, he'd have a few trophies to his name. The move over there has done wonders for him. He should give Guzan a real run for the back-up spot. I think Bradley will go with Guzan just because he's at Aston Villa (BB loves pedigree), but Perkins deserves a chance to win that job.

Marshall has been terrific. Makes me wonder why he couldn't stick with Mainz this winter. If he doesn't go to Europe after this season, ya gotta think A WC appearance would get him a shot at a pretty decent club.

Pearce is also put his name back in the mix at left back. Will be interesting to see if Castillo gets some chances in a WCQ. We're still a year away, but it looks like Bradley's gonna have some choices to make in the defense. It's good to have choices.

Posted by: fischy | July 23, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Well in Fischy, but I always thought Perkins did play like that for United, barring his one slip up vs. Chivas.

Posted by: JkR- | July 23, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

@duck95 -- Obviously, Bruce Arena shared your opinion, keeping Ching on the bench for the entire group stage. I was of the opinion then that this was a mistake. Everything I've seen since convinces me I was right. No, he doesn't have the speed that gets open space and he doesn't score much on the international level -- but he does the things that can make the rest of the USA team so much better. If Holden and Quaranta had been on the same page and acted more quickly, Ching would have scored one and assisted for Tino on another. That's the point I was making. It wasn't his game that was lacking the top-level quality tonight. If his teammates had been sharper, you'd be raving about his performance.

Costa Rica just had a shot go off the inside of the upper right corner. Mexico is on their heels some right now. Soldier Field is loud on Univision. Stuff is continuing to be thrown on the field... Argy-bargy breaking out in the 18th minute as Mexican captain shoves a CR player down after the whistle. Both teams come together for some pushy-shovey stuff for 20 seconds, and then it calms down. Yellow to the Mexico captain.

Someone other than Escober was taking the goal kicks for the Catrachos. Isn't that rather unusual at this level?

Posted by: cow_pasture | July 23, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Hondurans were coming out of nowhere to defend their player and a small fight broke out. Only one card. The ref may be letting too much go. Is there a light or something that makes it hard for the linesmen to see the end lines in Chicago? I've seen too many missed corners and goal kicks in these two matches.

Seriously though, the throwing crap is getting way out of hand. We (meanig Fifa or Concacaf) needs to find a way to get this taken out of the games. Whether it be punishments against the team, fans, FMF, whatever. It just needs to stop.

Posted by: spikeman | July 24, 2009 12:11 AM | Report abuse

They kept mentioning it during the Braves game, and I saw highlights on sportscenter. Some games just have better things than others. A goal in soccer is better than most anything anywhere else, the alley-oop is great, but nothing is comparable to throwing a perfect game in baseball. I mean, 100+ years of professional baseball, and there's been 18! That's just amazing to me.

@ fischy,

Who would you have taken off the field to make room for Ching in the world cup?

If you try to answer that question, you're more in love than I thought.

To be a striker, you have to score goals. Whenever Ching goes to strike a ball, or rises for the ball, my question is not "Will he score?" Adrenaline doesn't kick in. This guy doesn't start over either Altidore or Davies, the only reason we made it to the final in the confed cup was because we didn't have to make room for him in starting eleven.

He needs three more talented people around him to make that play, one to pass to him, one to pass to, and Cooper to actually... SCORE!

I was just reading some stuff about the perfect game. The President congratulated him by phone afterwards of course. What stood out in the article I read was this:

About an hour after his perfect game, Buehrle said he received 54 text messages.

"I didn't know I had 54 friends," he said. "I had eight phone calls, too."

Stuff continues to be thrown in Chicago... Buehrle is impressed.

I'm ripping this off SBI, but I thought it was just bloody brilliant:

I have a solution for the Mexican fan problem. We could give "Ambassador" David Beckham the job to attend Mexican MNT games in the U.S. and help calm the fans down. He could even go around the stadium and offer to shake hands with them.

By my count, the Costa Rican keeper could have stopped 3 shots. All were right at him, but he dove before the ball was struck.

Why do keepers dive early? So stupid! It seems that half of penalty kicks are poorly aimed shots, but the keeper has already committed, resulting in a goal.

Classless Mexican fans everywhere! Or is classless Mexican fan redundant?

Posted by: delantero | July 24, 2009 12:52 AM | Report abuse

@UnitedDemon -- It's not even a question of who should have come off. In the second half, Arena brought on Eddie Johnson and Bobby Convey, of all people. What was really needed was another guy who could help McBride get some possession in the Ghana end -- and then Donovan, Dempsey or Lewis might have been able to do something. I know having 2 target forwards in at the same time is unusual, but it's what the USA needed...not a literally lame Bobby Convey.

Posted by: GoUnited | July 24, 2009 1:13 AM | Report abuse

I don't get their genuine "class" behavior either. Must be too many etiquette courses. They really need to just let go and have a Tecate every now and then.

Posted by: croftonpost | July 24, 2009 1:23 AM | Report abuse

Holden and Ching were the best players on the night. Ching once again played to what's expected -- hold the ball, play physical, work his ass off, but, yet again, miss clear opportunities. He's pretty much carved out that niche role, and he should end up being a great change of pace for the Altidore/Davies combo, but he'll never (or I should say "should never") be a primary option so long as he consistently struggles to finish opportunities.

Holden once again was the creator and facilitator on the night, recording the primary assist on both goals, delivering point-blank opportunities on a few other occasions (Goodson and Arnoud headers from the back post in the first half come to mind), and was dangerous on set pieces (a welcome attribute). If he isn't two steps ahead of Kljestan on the pecking order for the "A" team, I don't know what to say (potentially, he should be the next viable option after Feilhaber for the creative CM/LM/RM).

Rogers may be the least tactically savvy player in the entire pool. Just thought I'd throw that out there. It's as if the man thinks you must score by attacking the corner flag at all costs. If I'm Bradley, I wouldn't allow Rogers to touch the ball wide for an entire training session. The next time I see him unnecessarily carry the ball to the flank, I may pull my hair out.

It just occurred to me that more of this thread is about Mexico-Costa Rica than USA-Honduras...

Just wait until Hanauer finds out the Gold Cup final isn't in Seattle and that the group stage was the only doubleheader they get. I'm waiting for him to explain that it was hard for fans to attend the July 4th match against Granada because it was a holiday and the 15,387 who made it only attended because they didn't have the day off.

Posted by: sitruc | July 24, 2009 3:00 AM | Report abuse

It is ashame that we have to play "El-Classless." I was hoping for redemption against Costa Rica. I hope there coach doesn't assualt one of our players. Also everyone should be very aware that Bretos and Sullivan will be talking about how much better any Latin American side is better than the US. They should be replaced.
