Thursday Kickaround

*In the highest-scoring match in WPS history, Cat Whitehill converted a rebound in stoppage time to lift the Washington Freedom to a 4-4 tie with Sky Blue FC in New Jersey. Trailing 3-1, Lisa De Vanna scored twice early in the second half for the Freedom (4-6-5) before Natasha Kai connected for Sky Blue (5-6-4) in the 86th minute. The Freedom, which is first in the league in both goals scored and allowed per game, will host St. Louis at 5 p.m. Saturday at RFK Stadium in the opener of a doubleheader with D.C. United.

*In the Not-Just-a-Liga-It's-a-SuperLiga semifinals before 7,000-plus at Foxborough, Chicago's Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored on a second-half free kick for a 2-1 victory over New England, which hit the woodwork three times. The Fire's opponent in the Aug. 5 final at Toyota Park will be Tigres, a 3-2 winner over Santos Laguna, which hit the barriers twice.

*MLS friendlies: Colorado played a 0-0 tie with Club America and Dallas defeated Comunicaciones, 2-0.

*More on Bristol City's interest in USA forward Kenny Cooper.

*MLS tonight: David Beckham's return to the Galaxy vs. the wretched Red Bulls at Giants Stadium (8 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel).

*D.C. United's under-18 squad will play in the USSF Developmental Academy final tonight against Carmel United (10 p.m., ESPN Classic). Andy Najar Rodriguez, who just finished his sophomore season at Edison High School in Alexandria, has four goals in three matches.

*Estudiantes claimed the Copa Libertadores title for the first time in 39 years with a 2-1 victory at Cruzeiro. Watch:

from the KC article:

"David Clarkson, Nicky Maynard, Lee Trundle and John Akinde remain on the books at Ashton Gate, yet none are particularly strong in the air and Johnson is understood to have accorded the acquisition of a tall striker priority status."

um, have they seen him play? Cooper is big, but he's hardly a target in the air. the man plays like he wants to be 5'6".

Goooooooool de Estudiantes.

*Cue the music*

Was this commentator sleep walking, somehow managed to sneak into the press box?

Some of us drove up for the Freedom match and were glad we did - very exciting game. I was ticked off because at halftime I ran into someone back of the stands I knew from online. We got to chatting, I lost track of time and I didn't get back to my seat until the 47th minute, in which interval the score went from 2-1 to 3-2.

Remember that the #1 (Hudson Valley) and #2 (Washington) teams in the W-League face off at the Soccerplex tonight at 7 pm, with the winner taking over the regular season lead - a huge deal because the #1 team gets a bye into the semifinals and home field advantage.

Only 10k for America? Spoiled in Colorado! We'll do much better in Atlanta.

And no attendance reported for Dallas? Hmm.

"is tommy smyth calling the TdF?"

That's only the legendary Phil Liggett, without whom cycling is just a bunch of dudes pedaling around pretty landscape. He could make watching paint dry exciting. His colleague is Paul Sherwen, former racer.

And Team Hematocrit is suffering a case of bad luck--two of my riders are out d/t crashes (Gersink and Asle-Arvesen). Let's hope it ends here.

Argy Bargy I missed it! At least I didn't forget to reset my FMLS team though...
Funny little via BTB of Tino and Stuey kickin' field goals with David Akers in PHilly. He also throws on the gloves minds the net.

Wambach leads the league in shots on goal, but is off the league chart in goals scored (3). Cat Whitehill has as many goals as Wambach.

Freedom leaders are DeVanna with 5 goals and Sonia with 4. Sonia leads in assists with 5.

Sauerbrunn and Sawa have played every minute of every game.

The only US WNT player on the scoring charts for the league is Kai. Tarpley and Lilly are on 3 with Whitehill and Wambach (as are Tiffeny Millbrett and Kacey White). Carli Lloyd is nowhere to be seen.

What a collapse by Cruziero at home in Belo Horizonte! Mal! Mal! Mal!

I mentioned in an earlier thread, I was reading the twitter on the Colorado Rapids vs Club America match - it seems the Rapids two defenders - Gibbs and Baudet - got hurt during the match. With Ihemulu (spelling?) out with yellow card suspension - the defense of Colorado is looking weak for Saturday.

Gibbs got hurt?

Wow, it took a year.

Oh, well do better for America, but most everyone will be there to see Milan ;).

Any news on ticket sales, AJC has nothing of course, and the World Football Challenge just has links to tickets and team stores.

Which exit?

you guys hear about this?:

didn't realize the drinking age was only 19 in Toronto. That explains a couple things...;-)

Ohhh RK, I tried to give it away with the ";)", but oh well. I fully expect a lot of horns and all. I really don't mind it that much. Granted it was a much smaller crowd, but I went to Pachuca-Silverbacks last year, and thouroughly enjoyed myself, even in the rain.

Here's a shot of Cuauhtemoc Blanco at the news conference, talking about his goal:

You think Veron is happy he didn't come to DC United? Maybe just a little bit?

Posted by: SonicDeathMonkey | July 16, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

What a collapse by Cruziero at home in Belo Horizonte! Mal! Mal! Mal!

That was no collapse by Cruzeiro; Estudiantes just wanted it more and were the better team.

Veron had an amazing game last night, he was all over the field tackling, created chances and took the game and made it his own.

Rapids will be at full strength on Sat. Gibbs took a cheap two-footed ankle high tackle (from a mexican? What a surprise) and limped around most of the match. They took him out as a precausion. The new French defender is awesome. They pulled him because he's only been at altitude for a few weeks.

America may be in preseason and have good players, but they are friggin dirty. No wonder Mexican soccer is tanking.

Time for my yearly reference to Ihemulu's unflagged (not even whistled) monstrous tackle @ RFK that derailed Mediate's promising career...

I guess I'm glad that he won't be around to chop down any United players, but I'd still like to see him get his due in some way beyond the suspension he got.

>The new French defender is awesome.

Who is the Francophile you speak of? Hadn't heard they signed someone.

Posted by: Reignking | July 16, 2009 12:21 PM | Report abuse

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julien_Baudet

Don't know if he's a Francophile or not, but he's definitely French!

Awesome? Probably not. Well, he did play with Toulouse early in his career...but then never above third division in England after that.

Even Brazilians are commending Estudiantes' performance in front of 65,000 Cruzeiro fans.

They stuck to their game plan and executed it very well. Even when they fell behind by a goal...

Congratulations!
